About Joe L

Hey all, I've been playing and running games for fifteen years now, mostly centered around either Dungeons and Dragons or Daggerheart since release, and some Pathfinder. Running games is my favorite method of story telling, where I get to build a giant sandbox and experience it alongside you.

I got started GMing...

over 15 years ago using beer bottle caps as miniatures with a group of friends in my basement, and none of us had any idea what we were doing.

My favorite books are

The Red Rising saga by Pierce Brown, Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, and Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

How Joe L runs games

When running games I prefer to run a collaborative table where all of us are contributing to the success of the world we're playing in together. The games tend to focus slightly more on character driven roleplay, but I stay pretty close to an even split between that and the combat. When it comes to rules, I definitely air more one the rule of cool over rules as written, so long as it doesn't break the game let's bend the rules as best we can. This is part of the reason I prefer to run Daggerheart over any other system.

My games focus on...

the players and how their choices affect the narrative. I don't typically run pre-written adventure modules, so I'm not beholden to any plot outside of what we make together.

Joe L's ideal table

My ideal table is one where we're all able to relax and enjoy the game we're playing together. I enjoy combat as much as I enjoy role-play, so I'm always going to strive to keep the two balanced. I want a table where we're all able to use what the game developers gave us to create the most unique story we can using the tools at our disposal, even if we use them in ways that bend, but not break, the rules.
