About me
Hi there! I’m Izar. I discovered TTRPGs back in 2018 and have been GMing multiple games per week since. I have somewhat of a background as a writer, poet, and director, as well as some professional voice acting experience, and I’ve GMed for as few as one player and as many as twenty-one. I’m based on the west coast of Canada, where I love to make music, practice martial arts, game, and read, and my day job is in a knife and blade shop. I’m a hellenic pagan, I own a New Zealand white rabbit, and I have strong opinions about personal freedom and the power of love. My main inspirations are what I grew up with - Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, 90s Anime, music like Nick Cave, and really a bit of everything. My games tend to be narrative-heavy, story-focused, and rules-light with an emphasis on emotion, character growth, and deep thinking - though I always leave plenty of room for fun to ensure things don’t get stuffy. I tend to skew a bit darker, the tone of my games usually matches things like Andor, Lord of the Rings, or Dark Souls, and the lightness comes from exploration and freedom (think the tone of Nausicaa or Princess Mononoke). I often incorporate themes of isolation, love, courage, rebellion, and absurdism into my games, as well as slight political commentary (usually freedom over tyranny, anti-fascism, etc). I’m available for as long as I can take off work while still affording rent. Most of my sessions are technically pay-what-you-want, but I do need to keep a roof over my head. I do my best to give the best experience possible, always making room for players to give feedback after games and trying my hardest to make an accepting, welcoming, friendly environment where people can feel safe and ready to be absorbed into the story. Thanks so much for reading, and happy gaming.
GM Style
I love storytelling. I don’t believe roleplay and combat are a dichotomy. I enjoy play-by-play combat where you, as a player, can think creatively and just do what feels natural and best to the story, and it can work out cinematically. There’s a heavy emphasis on immersion and feel. Not heavy on numbers or crunch, more on atmosphere and progression. While I’m proficient in VTTs, I usually lean more to theatre of the mind so players can visualize for themselves - though I will absolutely use battlemaps and reference images when necessary. My games usually take upwards of a year, though they can be episodic, or even roguelike. They often feel more like movies or books more than videogames, which is why I often use homebrew systems. I do a different voice for each character, though you are not expected to. What I love, above all, is helping others feel the emotional payoff, the screams of terror, tears of grief, the growls of anger and sighs of relief that come with good storytelling. Truly taking players along for a journey that not only helps them have fun, but also makes them think and feel profoundly is truly a priceless thing, and I will always strive for that.
