About me

Hey whoever is taking the time to read this ramble, I'm Kevin. I've been playing DnD for roughly 6 years or so now, though I've only DMed a little in that time, twice through Phandelvar, partway through Out of the Abyss once and a couple one-shots sprinkled in there for good measure. One of the things that caused me to come back to DnD over and over again is just how amazing the worlds and characters can be. The story created in a game reminds me of a good (or bad depending on the group) book or movie. When it's good, you don't wanna stop. You want to see what happens next again and again. When I'm not immersing myself in DnD I like to read books, and play video games. I've also dipped into Shadow Run a couple times, though I don't think I'll ever understand THAT beast enough to run it.

GM Style

When it comes to the games I run, I like to try to get a good mix between rp/combat/and the occasional puzzle thrown in for good measure. Good old fashioned dungeon crawls hold a special place for me. I also tend to go for some more humorous traps mixed in with the deadly ones, like a trap that changes your characters hair to bubblegum pink, or changes your characters height for a while, or maybe changes your characters voice. Combat tends to be a bit more of a challenge than simply "I attack, I hit, I win". I like to mix combat up from time to time. So while some combat encounters will be laughably easy, others will push the party to the limit. In terms of story, I like building an overarching plot (setting up the final boss, that kind of thing) and then altering the in-between parts depending on how the players interact with the world around them and where they choose to go to next. To me, every game is like a book, whether it's a one-shot that spans 4 or 5 hours or an epic adventure that lasts years. I make my own maps for battle, sometimes for towns if the party will be there for a bit. I play music where I can, sometimes it's just sounds based on where the party is; such as water dripping in a cave or a lot of background noise for taverns and cities. The right music in combat can help set the stage and make it that much more epic. I will attempt to use voices for npc's that the party interacts with, with varying and occasionally hilariously bad degrees of success and failure.
