About Matt

What's up party people? I'm Matt, a forever Dungeon Master for over 7 years! I've had so much fun hosting friends, family, kids, strangers and everybody in-between at my Dungeons & Dragons tables. If you're thinking about trying D&D 5e for the first time, or flexing your roleplay muscles with a new group, let's team up! I primarily host through Roll20 and Discord. I'm available for pre-game character creation tutorials, session zeros, one-shots and short adventures. I primarily run official Wizards of the Coast D&D 5e content, but I have a couple other systems up my sleeve. LGBTQ+ friendly, RPG Safety Compliant and a firm believer in the "Rule of Cool". Questions are welcome! Find me on Discord: Dungeon Mattster #4811 - Matt

I became a GM because

...I had just moved across Canada and didn't know a soul! I put up D&D posters in elevators advertising my first attempt at a D&D game, and it turned out to be the perfect way to meet new people and some of my best friends!

I got started GMing...

...out of a common area in a student residence!

When I'm not running games I'm...

...coaching kids soccer, working affer-school care, building custom orthotics and trying to self-educate myself in practical special effects!

How Matt runs games

I thrive in High Magic Heroic Fantasy. Generally, I am 50/50 on roleplay and combat, and try my best not to let rules detract from a great roleplay situation or slow down combat. When it comes to roleplay, I'm not afraid to delve into silliness, theatrics, villany and passion. Every NPC you meet will have something to say (even the plants and beasts, for all you Druids out there!) When it comes to combat, I like keeping things intense and fast! I actively swap out mechanics that rob players of whole turns (looking at you, D&D 5e Stunned & Paralyzed) and find a better way to challenge the players... I also have an optional House Rule to make Skill Checks cheaper and more useful in combat! Lastly, I believe a DM is a host, not an adversary. My players can expect to have lots of creative agency, spotlight, and a even a little "DM power"... but with a little power comes a little responsibility. My table is RPG safety compliant and runs on open communication.

I deal with rules issues by...

...making an executive decision in the moment. If the rule is simple and can be searched up in a few seconds - easy! If it's more complicated, I know the system well enough to make a rule approximation that all parties can agree to and keep things rolling.

I prep by

...scrolling through a massive library of battlemaps until I find just the right one! I take pride in my selection of artist-made battlemaps. You won't catch me using AI. Oh, and I make a lot of notes on the Notion app!

My favorite trope is...

...the "Antagonist Turned Ally". I have a long history of my players not so much befriending the villains of the story, but the literal monsters they encounter along the way!

Matt's ideal table

The biggest asset anyone can bring to my table is a character with a personal quest. A character that knows what they want to do and actively seeks it out is an enjoyable one to cater to. Besides that, just a willingness to have fun and not get caught up in total strategy and mathematical optimization.
