I have been playing for 30 years and DMing for nearly 10 now. I have been running a friend group online since the pandemic and I've gotten really good at transferring my skill set to online games. Some of the difference I have heard about my style of game compared to other DMs is my ability to balance out tones, with either drama, action, horror, or comedy, being mixed well and keep things entertaining. My players also notice I work hard with them to make their character feel realized in the world they are in and I tend to make stories fit the characters and the players more than just treating them like cogs in the machine of module. I've been known to go down rabbit holes of research to know about a subject that a character might be into so I can let that character shine and give the player opportunities to realize their vision. I feel my biggest job when running a game is to make sure everyone is having a good time. Which could mean for your characters feeling like a bad ass in combat, having something ridiculous happen with a botched roll, going through high stakes suspense and drama, or having a laugh at the local tavern. And for the players that means being heard and respected, working together to build something better than we could make on our own, and leaving the session excited for the next.
