About Matt

Hello! I'm Matt, a creative and versatile GM that strikes a balance between system-consistency and expressive storytelling. I have been running and playing Daggerheart since its initial playtest and I'm active in local and global communities. I have a background in teaching and community which comes across in my GM style.

I got started GMing...

By running a Daggerheart game for the first time with 7 friends, figuring the game out together as we played around in a self-written adventure.

My favorite books are

Everything Terry Pratchett wrote but especially Nation. The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks. The Scott Pilgrim graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley.

How Matt runs games

I aim for a good balance in my games; roleplay and action, narrative tension and comic relief. Most of all, I love to craft stories that revolve around their characters and allow players to express their creativity through narrative-driven character design and collaborative storytelling. I gravitate towards heroic, adventurous stories with an emotional backbone that don't take themselves too seriously. I am comfortable with all kinds of players from all walks of life with a simple expectation: Respect for each other and for the joint storytelling effort.

Rules are...

Important for a consistent and reliable game, but it's also important to know how and when to bend them.

When it comes to voices

I personally don't enjoy voicing characters individually, but I have a lot of respect for people with the talent to do it!

Matt's ideal table

My table is inclusive, respectful and involved. Engaging with the story and thinking creatively about how your character fits into it is an essential part of my games.

I love it when a player

Really engages with the narrative elements of the story and adds depth to their character through creative elements and flavour.

I think min/maxing...

Has a time and a place. It can be interesting as a way to get familiar with crunchy rules and to explore concepts, but it's important that all players around the table are on the same page.
