About me
Hold, Traveler! Your feet have grown tired, your mind cloudy by the trials of your quest. Just as the sun starts to set over the gnarly old trees around you, an icy wind starts to howl through the the mist and chills you to the bones. But what’s this? The icy wind carries the curious scent of… Cinnamon Buns? You turn to follow the scent and discover, through the leaves, an aery glow, that just might be a campfire. Breaking through thicket and thorns, you come upon a small riverbed, slowly fading behind the growing shadows of the ancient mountain-ridge in your wake. The air is warmer here and smells overwhelmingly like fresh baked goods. What’s more, right where the river meets the shore, you behold a curious, ferret-like creature, apparently made of pure Starfire, hovering through the air, as if it was water. As the orange light of the evening sun breaks through their surreal form, it creates a whole new color, that vaguely reminds you of a pearl. The Spectral Otter has spotted you – and holds very still for a moment. Their beady little eyes seem to look right through you. They ponder. Then, suddenly, they jump up and disappear into shallow black water of the river behind them. Seconds go by, minutes then. Suddenly, they reemerge. Carrying a stone – nay – a pebble. They float closer and hand it to you. The rock’s surface is so smooth and warm to the touch, that it feels more like a warm porcelain-cup in your hand. Suddenly, you know this to be an invitation. And a rare one at that. You understand intuitively, within a heartbeat: Not many mortals have held a Good-Pebble in their paws. Clearly, as if they had told you in words, you know that they offer you to sit with them and listen to their story. No – not listen. They invite you to tell it, create it, alongside them. In your heart, you know that hey bestow you nothing less than the opportunity to create a story, a fable, a universe of your own. A universe to discover, to shape, to live in. To escape the hardships of the one you’re currently in. Even if only for a few hours, every now and then. For this is how otters tell stories. Together. Sure, you might decide to use whatever daylight you have left, to carry on towards the ominous mountain-ridge ahead. But the next time you come through here, the Spectral Otter might be long gone. They hold out a tiny spectral paw and look at you expectingly. Will you shake it?
GM Style
I enjoy giving as much authority over the world in which a game is set to my players, as possible. And it's mostly egoistical. One of the most disheartening parts of being a writer: Most of the stuff you write will never have an audience. Unless you can finish, publish and sell something. Which I was never able to motivate myself to, because I rely on feedback for my art. That's why I fell in love with D&D and specifically DMing. I don't tell a story to myself. I don't even tell a story to others. I tell a story with others. While you get to have agency in the world, I get to see stories unfold, that I couldn't have imagined alone. Which to me, as a very novelty-driven neurodivergent person means: Free serotonin. What I've learned from my years of DM-experience is that the biggest strength of TTRPGs is collaborative Storytelling. Making stories, that no one single person could ever come up with. Because just through being seen through the eyes and told by the words of multiple people at the same time, these stories are automatically so much richer in perspective, mindset, humor and background than anything a single artist could ever make. That's also one of the reasons I often don't strictly align with official lore. Wanna play an atheist paladin? I got you. Not sure where your guy came from? Let's create a place and society, that fits right in with your backstory. And every time you tell your friends about it, you can add details of your own. Sure, I take inspo from official D&D sources, wherever I feel inspired by them. I also like to get ideas from weird folklore, a sick piece of media I've consumed or ideas and topics concerning the real world. In the end I would say my GM-style is "Fun first". Not meaning, that you're going to have a smooth little picknick in the elven-glades. As a storyteller, "fun" to me includes conflict and drama and messes to be made and messes to be fixed. Character growth is the heart of every good story and often, there needs to be danger in order to bring that forth. An adventure with no struggle and nothing to lose is no adventure at all.
