About me
I started playing Dungeons and Dragons as my friend group's GM when I just started high school in the 9th grade. 8 years in education in psychology, writing, and theatre down under my belt and I quickly found myself with nearly a decade of experience in Dungeons and Dragons, just persuing my passion of sitting with a group of friends to have a table top roleplay experience. It's an actors, writer's, and worldbuilder's wonderland, and I have been developing them along with my own fully functional homebrew campaign setting. As an Asian-American Non-Binary DM, I put acceptance and inclusivity as a top priority to a co-operative game of heroes and tales of wonder. My narratives are emotionally critical and almost absurdly comedic, guaranteed to deliver to a player all they want. Trust me, I've DM'ed over 100 different players, from literally all over the world! I'm signed up here because yes, I think GMing is an art, and yes, I do think they should be paid for their work.
GM Style
I'm a huge fan of having the players feel immersed into the world around them, so I love roleplay, creating intelligently designed and dynamically handled combat, and I have voice acting training for 4 years or so. Any player who has had me will speak to my ability to create a gripping narrative with memorable characters along with mechanically satisfying and creative game play.
Game Master Reviews (11)
I have played a few times with Alex and they are a really dedicated person. I have tried to run my own games and still haven't grasped how to pull off an engaging experience but you can tell this GM really puts effort into plots you just want to get involved in. Also good at doing challenging combat in 5e without it feeling cheap, which is a rarity I feel. Besides that, Alex, brah, you do UNREASONABLY GOOD MINIGAMES. Like homebrew is one thing, but running a court room trial in DnD and it was FUN? Not just RP, but actual REALLY GOOD mechanics? Really impressive. Thanks for a fun time dude hope to have ya again soon
Alex is an exemplary GM who seems to find themself at their best when they're able to paint landscapes with words, highlight cultural eccentricities unique to his worlds, dish out compelling morsels of lore-related hints and peeks at larger conflicts, and all the while introduce profoundly interesting and memorable characters along the way. I've never seen them put anything less than 110% into any creative piece they've worked on. I'd recommend joining Alex for an adventure if you're looking for a roleplay-heavy, low-concept campaign that holds tightly to the relationships of the player characters and their journey while also showcasing bigger picture themes indigenous to his unique worldbuilding approach and style.
I've been playing with Alex for the past couple of months and I have to say they are an excellent DM. Specifically, they've built a whole world for us players to explore with deep lore and new mechanical inventions to really keep us engaged it's a testament to their commitment to making this a great experience for all. The time and dedication that has been shown is immense. Always find some humor with Alex as well as a deep understanding of rules and player agency opportunities abound. Nothing is off limits as it should be in DnD your mind is your greatest weapon. Now, gather your party and venture forth.
There is no truer statement than what I'm about to say: Alex Hermans cares deeply for the worlds they create. If you ever wanted to jump into a world like the ones in Avatar, Lord of the Rings, or any Hayao Miyazaki film, then you’re in luck. No one does world immersion like Alex does. No one. That’s because Alex plays by a rule of “no character left behind”, where each character has a rich story. In the same vein: many story elements like magic systems, gods, calendars, currencies, and locations are as deep and interesting as Alex’s characters. This may sound like a lot, but Alex balances extraordinary detail with wit and the comfort of the bond they share with their players. Their world of Vetel feels like an actual place, because of these details and not despite them. Each person who plays in this world are actual champions (or villains) that change the world. Alex may make the oceans of Vetel, but the players can turn the tides. The first time I met Alex, we were waiting for a friend. In the waiting room were these dominos, with many pieces missing. This didn’t deter Alex. In an instant, Alex made a strategy game that was more fun than any card game I’ve ever played. Even though I was a near-complete stranger. It is because of this memory I realize that Alex lives and breathes game design. This GM will amaze you each and every time, even if you’ve been playing RPGs as long as they have. If you don’t believe me, give one of their games a shot and see Alex in their element for yourself.
