I became a GM because

I became a Dungeon Master because I saw a gap wide enough for a whole adventuring party to fall through — a need for storytellers who understand that the game doesn’t belong to the DM. It belongs to the players, their choices, their chaos, their courage, and the way their characters live.

Bigbilly's ideal table

I became a Dungeon Master because I saw a gap wide enough for a whole adventuring party to fall through — a need for storytellers who understand that the game doesn’t belong to the DM. It belongs to the players, their choices, their chaos, their courage, and the way their characters rise or crumble based on decisions that they make, not outcomes the DM forces into place. Too often I watched tables where the story felt like a locked door with no keyhole: beautifully described, tightly written, but closed off. The heroes weren’t adventurers shaping their world — they were passengers being ushered from scene to scene. I knew there was another way. I wanted to build stories that breathe, bend, and evolve in the hands of the players, where their victories feel earned and their failures reshape the world, not derail it. So I stepped behind the screen. When I DM, I’m not the puppet master. I’m the world. I’m the wind that whispers hints, the villain plotting in the dark, the tavern where rumors spark, the cliff that gives way under a hero’s boot. But the direction? The heartbeat? That comes from the players. Their ideas, their instincts, their wild gambles — that’s the engine of the story. My job is to listen, adapt, and spotlight them like the legends they’re becoming. I weave consequences, not cages. I build stakes, not scripts. I create room for the unexpected and celebrate the moments when the players surprise even themselves. I became a DM to help players feel powerful, vulnerable, heroic, terrified, clever, foolish, triumphant — all through choices that matter. And when they walk away remembering their story, not mine, that’s when I know I’m doing it right.
