About me

Hello there, my name is Steve! I am in my mid-20s and have been playing D&D 5e since 2018. It all started when a friend of my wife's wanted to get her to play D&D, however, they knew she would skeptical. Recognizing the inner nerd in me, they bought me a cheap set of dice and read out the Player's Handbook character options to me and I was immediately hooked. Since then, I have been playing D&D at least twice a week for the past 4 years, including the occasional marathon weekend staying up far too late to see the conclusion of a tense scenario or boss fight. I started DMing within the first couple months of my D&D career and have fallen in love with running the game (in Matt Colville's words). On a more personal level, I work as a Project Manager for a team of software developers and my favorite video games are Europa Universalis IV, Civilization V, and Rimworld. I am also a father of one real infant and two furry pups. In my free time (when I am not playing D&D), I enjoy creating maps in Wonderdraft, worldbuilding, preparing campaigns I will likely never play, and even designing my own TTRPG system (just for fun). This has left me with an arsenal of D&D content at the ready to be slotted in wherever it is needed.

GM style

As a DM, I place great emphasis on creating immersive narrative experiences through cinematic theater of the mind combat, high stakes plots, player character tie-ins, first person roleplaying, and deep worldbuilding. My preferred approach is to provide the scenario, ensure the player characters are invested, then empower the players to collectively drive the narrative. To facilitate this style and keep the focus on immersion and storytelling, I rarely make use of tools such as virtual tabletops, battle maps, or dungeon maps. I also assign little importance to the mechanics and prefer to view them as tools that the players have, rather than limits. This allows me to foster player creativity, both in and out of combat beyond what is strictly listed in the rules. Between the serious moments, I do enjoy a good laugh at a well timed natural 1 and welcome humor into the game when appropriate. In terms of sensitive topics, they are avoided by default, requests will be honored, and I will enforce civility and respect at my table with zero tolerance for harassment and bigotry of any kind.
