About me

Get in loser; we’re going adventuring. Hello and welcome to the circus. I’m Thy Dungeonman. I’ve been playing TTRPG’s for over twenty years; if I don’t have a handle on it by now, there’s no hope for me. I work in film and television production, so you could say that telling stories is my livelihood. You could also say I’m full of it. Please don’t. I’m here for the love of the game. My job has given me a certain insight (read: cynicism) regarding the craft of storytelling, but TTRPG’s have always been a source of unabashed joy for me. Anything and everything can happen once dice start rolling. You may discover a whole new truth about your character or perhaps even yourself. You may split your sides laughing, freeze up with fear, or be moved to tears. And it's all thanks to one crucial variable: you. You, the player, you willful agent of chaos. You are the unknown variable that elevates even a paint-by-numbers module to an interactive world of limitless possibility. The best-laid GM plans never survive first contact with the players, and I thank you for it. I’m familiar with Roll20 and most of the other virtual systems, but I believe good storytelling and compelling character choices can make any game memorable. No matter what happens, our games together will be full of laughs, action, and perhaps even a little gravitas. So, what say you, brave adventurer? I can hear the calliope softly calling in the distance, how about you?

GM Style

We’re here to have fun. That’s why we’ve all agreed to pretend to be elves and do basic math together. If something isn’t working for you, we’ll discuss the issue and come to a solution that ensures you and the group are all having a good time. I believe that story trumps mechanics: if the rules don’t tell us how to do something awesome, we will make something up that works for the group. Hell, there’s even a chance I’ll ask the group if we can tweak some of the rules (D&D doesn’t handle travel or crafting well). I’ve been railroaded enough times to have a near-reverent respect for player agency. Do as you will, to your own betterment or detriment. I am very much a “roll with the punches” GM, since you aren’t going to do what I expect/want anyway. Creative solutions are encouraged, as are any solutions other than just murdering your way out of all your problems. Tone and balance of gaming elements are unique to every party. Some people want heavy roleplaying and political intrigue, others just want to drink beer and fight monsters. I’m down to clown, either way. If the group is open to it, I like to run a Session 0 where we can discuss these things and give everyone a chance to work on their characters and party dynamics. All experience levels welcome, from bright-eyed beginners to jaded veterans.
