About me

Hello, My name is Brett. I'm 36 and a father of 2 and a life long gamer...I read my first tabletop gaming books at the ripe old age of 10. I didn't even know what to do with them, I just thought the spell descriptions were awesome and the descriptions of the different locations and characters were enthralling...and I've been hooked ever since. I really started to get serious with tabletop RPGs when i got out of the army about 6 years ago...first as a player for a few years, mostly in D&D. But eventually I began to cut my teeth as a GM. And I would continue to DM in the D&D setting for many years. What really gets me going with tabletop RPGs is seeing my players having a good time. Watching them discuss the game and the events that unfolded in our discord lets me know I engaged them and that they had fun. There is no better reward to a GM than that. Fast forward to today and I still have a lot of love for D&D and Pathfinder and many of the other systems I've both played in and GM'd for. But my passions have shifted. And now I have a new system of choice that I have chosen to devote my time and energy to. And that system is Blades in the Dark. I have been GMing and playing in the Blades in the Dark system by John Harper for about half a year now. I have devoured the rules and the lore several times over. I am intimately familiar with the game and it's setting. What I love most about Blades in the Dark is it's more cinematic and narrative approach to the TTRPG genre...and it's more collaborative style of play between the GM and Players. I know often times players can feel that it's a very GM vs Players style of game. I enjoy being able to more freely interact with my players and shape the narrative along with them in ways i wasn't quite able to do in D&D without spoiling story points and twists. I hope you will consider me to lead you through the world of Blades in the Dark and guide you through some wonderfully fun criminal adventures in the city of Doskvol together! I look forward to playing with you!

GM Style

I love to roleplay, I'm decent with character voices. Blades in the dark does not have tactical crunchy combat. But I feel like I'm good at improvising the obstacles and challenges that players will come up against in their criminal endeavors as well as the the bad things that happen when the dice don't go their way. Blades in the dark is more narrative and cinematic and leans heavily on being able to make stuff up on the spot, which I both enjoy and feel like i'm pretty decent at...I'm not the best, but i strive to improve all the time. I'm also laid back, and love to collaborate with my players as is encouraged in my chosen game system to make sure everyone is having the most fun they can possibly have without straying from the rules as written. I like to be fair, but also keep to the rules. This means that sometimes characters take harms and even worse if the situation and the dice go bad enough...But i'm never out to actively punish a character for bad dice rolls. That's just not fun or how my chosen system works!
