About Derek Thompson
My love of TTRPG's came about back in grade 9, when a young group of friends found a battered copy of an AD&D 2nd edition Player's Handbook and Monster Manual binder tucked away on a basement shelf. We spent hours making characters and flipping through the monster manual fighting whatever was on the page. No story, no maps, just a bunch of kids slinging dice, fighting imaginary monsters and learning to love Table Top RPG's. Years later, I have learned many systems and games and have run one shots and campaigns for family and friends. From more self contained stories to sweeping epics, from science fiction to high fantasy. My focus is on story and fun game playing. Depending on the group, or system, it can be rules heavy or rules lite. My main goal is that players enjoy themselves and can walk away with an appreciation for TTRPG's and maybe learn to make their own worlds to play in. My knowledge base includes D&D 5E, Pathfinder and Pathfinder 2nd Edition, Starfinder, Wrath and Glory, Age of Sigmar:Soulbound, Alternity, some home brew systems for Transformers, Avatar:Legends RPG and many, many others. Please let me know if there is a specific system you prefer to play in, if I don't know it currently, I easily can.

How Derek Thompson runs games
I enjoy creating worlds. As a GM I tend to write a story but allow players the agency to follow their own path. I can adjust story on the fly to work with the players' decisions and choices. I am not a fan of railroading players down a linear path. Combat depends on the system. If a group prefers more combat related scenes then that is what they will receive, if they enjoy more role playing and problem solving then that will be a major part of the session. I like to do a pre-session, or session Zero (these are no cost sessions), to get a feel for what the players are looking for in their game, is it combat heavy, more puzzles or intrigue, etc. I build the game around what the players will enjoy and what they are looking for from their time.
