About the adventure
Welcome to Waterdeep, Traveler, may your stay be a pleasant one, filled with wonder and merriment! ... Well, that's unlikely. In fact, the way things are looking, it's downright preposterous. Half a million dragons on the line, and that's the least of it. This city is about to dissolve into inner turmoil, and it won't be happening while the sun is up.Tensions are skyrocketing between the Zhentarim and the Xanathar Guild, and soon it will be all-out war on the streets... or in the back allies at least. Meanwhile, a strange carnival has arrived in town, and while the streets make merry by day strange rumors have been circling about the circus when night falls. So why oh why, I dare ask, have you made your way here and now? That will be the first question you, prospective players, will need to answer as we begin this urban adventure. I love the setting and idea of this tale that begins in the famed Yawning Portal, and am greatly looking forward to running it, but with some twists to the adventure's mood and feel. While the wonders of Waterdeep will never cease to abound, I hope to bring a darker, more personal take on this famed city, taking heavy inspiration from the Daredevil show and leaning into the inner conflicts of the city's factions. The stakes have never been higher, nor the possible rewards greater, than they are this Autumn in Waterdeep.

Meet the Game Master
About me
Welcome traveler, Come and sit for a while whilst I share my tale. Since I learned to read I have consumed stories like my life depended on it. Now, so many years later, I find no greater joy than the creation of stories, whether that be through my own personal writing or around the table with friends. Long before I discovered Dungeons and Dragons I was inventing role-playing games that I would force my friends and family to play with me. Discovering the ttrpg community in my later middle-school into high-school years changed my life. To this day, more than eight years after I started running games, I find no greater joy than the anticipation and ambition of that first session zero, sitting down with a new table of players and getting to meet their characters, to hear their hopes and inspirations for the campaign, and then to weave those inspirations into a world, a story, and most importantly a fun time. While this is my first step into the shoes of a professional Game Master, I have experience in leading many a long-term campaign and a multitude of one-shots for a combination of friends and strangers, new players and old, casual get togethers and events. My goal with any game is to tell a story that is fun without feeling superfluous, that feels structured and cohesive without rail-roading, and challenging to the point of reward rather than frustration. I love teaching the game to new players, as well as relishing in the knowledge of experienced players and the opportunities for exploration that experience provides. Most of all my goal is to take this wonderfully imaginative game and wring as many adventures from it as I can for I am, if nothing more, a lover of stories.

Creating your character
We will meet for a FREE session 0 and go over all these details there, as well as begin work on character creation together. There is no need to read the rest of this, especially if you are a new player, as I will explain it all on call. However, if you are a more experienced player or just curious, below is an outline of how I typically do character creation. Characters will be created during session 0 to these specifications: level: 1 ability scores: 16, 8, and roll for the rest (4d6 add highest three together) equipment: starting equipment or starting gold as outlined by the Players Handbook, plus one rare magic item important to your backstory backstory: will be key to the adventure, will start during session 0 and develop in collaboration with me and the other players, my goal is to give you as much freedom as possible and work your story into the story of the world and campaign so that you are as engaged as possible
What to expect
Preparing for the session
It would be cool if you start thinking about your character, what type of person you want to play, what their life might have been like before the adventure starts, and especially why they're in Waterdeep after so great a prize. We'll develop this in full during session 0 when I will share more information about the world, but starting to come up with ideas beforehand can make this process smoother and more fun. Once all players have assembled, you will also need to create a free Forge player account in order to log into the VTT, and join the Discord server where we can start discussing ideas and hopes for the campaign. Links to both of these will be sent once we have enough players to begin the campaign. The session will have support for both video and audio, though only audio is required.
What Laurian brings to the table
FREE Session 0: I will start the adventure with a free session 0, during which we will meet each other, begin character creation, go over rules and guidelines, logistics, etc. Logistics: This game will be run using Foundry VTT for maps, character tokens, ambient music and lighting, and a discord server for chat and audio/video call. Players will use their own character sheets in whatever form they prefer, but will roll dice in Foundry. Style: This game will be roleplay heavy with a good amount of combat and some puzzles interspersed. It will have an overall serious, dark feel, but with hopefully plenty of good humor and light-hearted moments. I tend to use rules as a loose guide and with a few home-brew alterations, namely the use of an injury chart when a character falls unconscious (adds stake to what I see as a faulty mechanic) and confidential death ST (adds suspense to tense situations). I am always down for improvisation if it suits the story and situation and will often alter rules slightly to suit what is happening. I do my best to voice my characters, and while my accents are far from perfect I thoroughly enjoy the acting side of roleplay and throw my all into it. Note: while it is never my goal to kill your character, be warned it may very well happen and if so I will not hesitate, as I believe this adds stake that makes the game more fun. The one assurance I can give you is that any character death will become a major story point, and you will be reintegrated as a new character asap. However, if this is not okay with you feel free to just let me know before we begin and I'll make sure that you survive, not a problem.
