About the adventure

Death was supposed to be the end. Instead, you awaken in an ancient crypt, surrounded by strangers who died years, decades, or even centuries apart. Beyond its walls awaits Marafall, a vast fantasy world of forgotten civilizations, warring kingdoms, ancient magic, and a reality that is slowly beginning to unravel. Marafall is an open-world D&D 5e campaign where your choices shape the story. Explore ancient ruins, uncover the mysteries of your resurrection, forge alliances, build your reputation, or pursue power for yourself. There is no predetermined path and no requirement to be a hero. Every decision carries consequences, and the world continues to change whether you choose to intervene or not. Expect a mixture of exploration, roleplay, mystery, challenging encounters, and meaningful character development. From magically scarred deserts to sprawling cities and forgotten kingdoms, Marafall offers a world filled with secrets waiting to be discovered. I build the world. You decide what happens to it. Content Warning: This campaign may include strong language, graphic violence, gore, disturbing imagery, uncomfortable or morally difficult situations, emotional hardship, death, trauma, horror themes, and other mature subject matter. Some scenes may be intense, unsettling, or emotionally heavy, though player boundaries and comfort will always be respected.

Meet the Game Master

Less than a year on StartPlaying

About me

I’m a story-focused Game Master who specializes in immersive homebrew worlds built around player agency, exploration, and lasting consequences. I create the setting, conflicts, factions, and people who inhabit the world, but I don’t decide how the story ends. That belongs to the players. Choices matter in my games. Allies remember what you’ve done, enemies adapt, ignored problems can grow, and characters can become heroes, villains, rulers, outlaws, or something I never expected. I enjoy morally complicated situations, creative problem-solving, roleplay, exploration, and cinematic combat. I’m comfortable adapting when players completely derail what I prepared; those moments often become the most memorable parts of a campaign. I also like fantasy worlds to feel tangible. Environments matter, NPCs have real motivations, and creatures behave like living things rather than bags of hit points. If a player comes up with an unconventional solution that makes sense, I’d rather find a fair way to let them attempt it than simply say the rules don’t cover it. My table is welcoming to both experienced players and newcomers. I build the world. You decide what happens to it.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation is flexible. You may use point buy or rolled stats, and I do not require a specific method or character-building process. What I do require is a completed character sheet and a comprehensive backstory before the campaign begins. Your backstory should give me a strong understanding of who your character was before the campaign: their history, personality, motivations, important relationships, goals, and the circumstances surrounding their death. Characters in Marafall may have died anywhere from a few years to nearly a thousand years before the campaign begins. All homebrew content must be approved before the campaign starts. This includes custom races/species, subclasses, backgrounds, spells, feats, items, or other unofficial material. Once you join the Discord server, you will receive a world map of Marafall along with a basic overview of the world and its major regions to help with character creation. You will also be able to ask me questions directly about the setting, character concepts, homebrew, or anything else you need while building your character.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

The only thing you need to participate in Marafall is a Discord account. All game communication and dice rolling will take place through our Discord server. You are welcome to use either physical or digital dice. If you prefer physical dice, you will need a camera so I can see your rolls. If you prefer digital dice, you can use the dice roller provided in our Discord server. Before our first session, please join the server, review the provided world map and setting information, and submit your completed character sheet and backstory. All homebrew content must be approved in advance. No additional software or subscriptions are required.

What Andre Eitner brings to the table

Maps & Visuals: I will provide a world map, regional maps, and a moderate number of illustrations depicting important locations, landmarks, and environments. However, Marafall will primarily be a theater-of-the-mind campaign. Battle maps will not be provided, so combat and exploration will rely on descriptions, communication, and imagination. Immersive Storytelling: I favor detailed, atmospheric descriptions that bring the world to life without describing every little detail. I'll give you enough to envision your surroundings while leaving plenty of room for your imagination to fill in the gaps. Character Voices & Roleplay: I enjoy performing multiple character voices and will frequently speak and act in character. Expect immersive NPC interactions, distinct personalities, and plenty of opportunities for meaningful roleplay. Rules & Flexibility: I believe bending the rules is sometimes necessary to create memorable moments, but breaking them entirely is another matter. I encourage creativity, unconventional solutions, and the Rule of Cool when appropriate. However, actions have consequences, and flexibility does not mean immunity from them. A World With Real Consequences: Marafall is a player-driven campaign. Your decisions will shape the world around you, and I won't force you down a predetermined path. You can become heroes, villains, or something in between. Just remember that the world will respond accordingly. Character death is a genuine possibility. Poor decisions, dangerous encounters, and unfortunate dice rolls can have permanent consequences. Your character is not protected by the story, and you may find yourself rolling up a new one.

Homebrew rules

Potions: Drinking a potion requires a bonus action rather than a full action. Critical Hits: Critical hits deal double the maximum possible damage instead of rolling damage dice. When you land a critical hit, it's going to hurt! Death Saving Throws: I will roll all death saving throws privately. Neither you nor the other players will know the results, adding tension and uncertainty when a character falls unconscious. Natural 20s: A natural 20 does not guarantee success on ability checks or impossible actions. Exceptional rolls can produce exceptional results, but your character is still bound by what is realistically achievable within the world. Custom Magic Items & Abilities: Throughout the campaign, you may encounter unique homebrew items, magical abilities, and rewards specifically tailored to your character, backstory, and decisions. Some may come with unexpected consequences. Rule of Cool: Creative solutions are encouraged, and I'm happy to bend the rules when appropriate. However, all rulings are ultimately at the DM's discretion, and actions will always have consequences.

Safety

How Andre Eitner creates a safe table

## Player Safety & Table Expectations My campaigns often explore mature themes, difficult moral decisions, and the consequences of player actions. While I enjoy creating emotionally challenging stories, my players' comfort and enjoyment always come first. No story is worth making someone genuinely uncomfortable at the table. **Session Zero — Lines and Veils** Before our first session, I will provide a Lines and Veils document where players can establish their personal boundaries, privately if preferred. * **Lines (hard limits):** Subjects that will not appear in the campaign, either directly or indirectly. These boundaries are non-negotiable and do not require an explanation. * **Veils (soft limits):** Subjects that may exist within the world but will happen off-screen or fade to black rather than being described or roleplayed in detail. During Session Zero, we'll discuss the campaign's themes, content warnings, player expectations, PvP boundaries, and everyone's comfort levels. Our Lines and Veils will remain open to changes throughout the campaign. If players have conflicting boundaries, the stricter boundary takes priority. **During Play — Full Stop** I use a safety system called **Full Stop**. At any point, for any reason, a player can say "Full Stop" aloud or send me a private message. I will immediately pause the game and give everyone a short break. I'll privately check in with the player, address the concern, and adjust the scene or story as needed before continuing. Players never have to explain their personal experiences or justify their boundaries to the group. If someone needs to leave a session, that's completely okay. **Aftercare — Stars and Wishes** At the end of each session, I'll offer everyone the opportunity to share a Star (something they enjoyed) and a Wish (something they'd like to see, explore, or change in future sessions). I'll also check in after particularly intense or emotionally difficult sessions. Players can contact me privately if something didn't sit right with them, even if they didn't feel comfortable mentioning it during the game. I use this feedback when preparing future sessions and will revisit our boundaries whenever necessary. **My goal is to create a world where your character's choices have real consequences, without compromising the trust and comfort of the people playing them.**
