About the adventure
You and your team of Shadowrunners are in town for a job. Mr. Johnson is cagey about why it required a group from outside the city to get this done, but there's a fat stack of Nuyen in it for you, and you needed to slip the heat in the hometown for a while anyway, so you piled into Jax's old Van and made a road trip of it. You just got into town, barely - the Van's transmission is iffy on the best of days, and it drekked out entirely just a few miles from the edge of the megacity's sprawl. The tow truck took four hours and no mechanics are open today - figures - so you dropped it off at a local shop and hoofed it the rest of the way. No sooner do you have yourselves a crash space when the lights go out . . . It'll just be a few hours, right? What's that noise? About the Game: ✦ Your Team is stranded in an unfamiliar city that is undergoing a major blackout. ✦ Survival becomes your priority, but maybe there's something bigger going on you can do something about. ✦ If this game was a movie, it would feel like a post-apocalyptic shoot 'em up, and would probably be rated R for extreme violence, four language, and whatever criminal mischief the players get up to. About the System: ✦ Shadowrun is a game set in an alternate future of the world we know, where Megacorps became as powerful as countries, disease ravaged the world, magic came roaring back, and the human genome split into multiple phenotypes that look a whole lot like something out of a fantasy novel. The world reacted . . . badly, and your characters have to make it through what we have left. ✦ The system uses a dice pool mechanic, pooling d6s and rolling for 5's and 6's (Hits) and watch out for 1's, creating a system that allows for a wide range of degrees of success and failure. ✦ Using a unique resource called "Edge" that the Players can use to make their own luck ✦ Character Creation is deep, detailed, and flexible, with a lot of customization built in to make your Shadowrunner unique. ✦ Shadowrun is significantly crunchier than D&D, as simulating a world where advanced technology and magic collide is just a bit complex. Still, you can learn the basics in a session, and master the subsystems of your character build in a few more.

Meet the Game Master
About me
Hail and Well Met! I am Overlord Jim (It's an old internet handle I happen to like, just go with it) and I have been running and playing TTRPGs for over 25 years now. My nerd credentials start with climbing every castle tower within driving distance of our home in Great Britain when I lived there as a child. My love of that era has lead me to become a serious medievalist scholar with a particular emphasis on the Early Medieval Era (better known as the Viking Age), and I have more than a passing familiarity with the Crusading Era and the Hundred Years War as well. My bookshelves are packed with all the classics of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Genres, and most of them are well loved with many creases in the spines. I got into theater as a teenager and minored in it in college, but my B.A. is in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations, and I have most of a Master's in International Studies that I just couldn't afford to complete. Someday I will go back for a M.A. in Medieval History, but for now, I content myself with reading it constantly to write better roleplaying books in historical settings. I am a Veteran of the Sub/Dub Wars (Dub Forever!), I believe one can like both Star Wars and Star Trek (though the latter is clearly superior), and my definition of a good night out always involves character sheets, dice, and stacks of roleplaying books. I have been a Storyteller as long as I can remember in my real life, I've been an aspiring novelist since my teens, and when I discovered these games, I was instantly hooked. I'm forever enamored of the freedom this medium offers. You have complete freedom of direction - you could go anywhere you can imagine and do anything the system can support (and often, quite a bit it was never meant to do but the GM makes it work!), which is something no other medium of entertainment can deliver, and you join in this endeavor with your friends as collaborators, and the story you tell together is always bigger than the sum of its parts. Every table and every troupe offers a unique experience, and I want nothing more than to come craft an epic story together with you. And I do mean EPIC. I love putting my PCs in the middle of the most exciting chapters in the history of their world, and handing them the power to change events for the better - or worse, if they so choose - just to see what they do with it. My favorite system - Exalted - is perfectly suited to this style of play, where I cast players in the roles of reborn Demigods out to save the world - or destroy it. What legends will they tell of your deeds? Come join my table and find out. A few entries from my Roleplaying Resume: - 25+ Years Experience behind the Screen - Specialized in Non-D&D Options [Exalted, Scion, Classic World of Darkness, Star Wars RPG (FFG Version), and more!] - Always willing to try a new system or setting - 10+ Years Experience as a Presenter on the Art of Game Mastery (https://www.facebook.com/ArtofGameMastery) - Coming to a Convention near you! - 10+ Years experience running Convention Games - Published Freelance Writer (Renegade Games Studio, High Level Games, Storyteller's Vault, Storypath Nexus, Jonstown Compendium) I have decided that all future scenarios I write will be with an eye towards their eventual publication, so you won't just be participating in an awesome online experience - you'll be playtesting new gaming materials too! About my Pricing Structure: I am a Plotter GM, not a Pantser GM, to borrow an analogy from writing - while every GM gets good at Improvisational GMing by necessity, it isn't my first choice and I prefer to come to the table with most of the prep work done long in advance. Therefore, my pricing reflects not only the time at the table, but also the time building the scenario, statting out the NPCs, planning the combat encounters - if you have ever run a TTRPG, you know it is at the very least a demanding Part Time Job if not a Full Time Occupation in and of itself! So while I do understand everyone in our hobby is perpetually broke (Roleplaying Books are an expensive addiction and Kickstarter is a hell of a drug), I also need to price in my prep time too. Besides, I plan to use any revenue I make from my endeavors here to pay for the art to decorate the books I'm writing - so you aren't just paying for an incredible STing experience - you're also helping to develop new RPG material and funding its development costs. You are contributing to the future of your hobby, which now more than ever is driven by the independent creatives like me who are invested in expanding it. So know that my time factors into the cost of the seat, and that your ticket to the game is going to support the hobby we both love. I look forward to rolling dice with you soon!

Creating your character
We will be using the Character Creation rules in Shadowrun: Sixth World Core, P. 59-67, though you should also read through pages 68-79 (Qualities), 80-91 (Archetypes), and 92-99 (Skills). You should also read Chapter 1: The Life You Have Left to understand exactly how the Sixth World got to be the way it is now to help you develop your Character Concept more fully. Pay particular attention to P. 61-63's sections on "How do you feel about the Darker Aspects of the World?" - Shadowrun's Sixth World is arguably one of the worse futures we could make for ourselves, and includes a lot of all-too-human ugliness that your Shadowrunners will have to deal with at some point. We'll talk more about this in the Safety Section.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
This is a game played over the Internet, and as such some means of reliable voice communication is necessary, so a mic and speakers so we can hear you and you can hear us are essential. A webcam is nice but not necessary, though I do prefer seeing my players' smiling faces whenever possible (It gets lonely being the only one on Camera!) You should also have made a player account at Foundry and communicated that to me, and sent me your Discord Handle as well. I use Zoom for voice and visual communications, so you should download the Zoom Client as well. All of these setup steps should only take a few minutes. (Note: you do NOT need to pay for accounts at either Zoom or Foundry. My paid accounts cover all of us.)
What Overlord Jim brings to the table
As a GM, I bring my theatrical background (which sometimes manifests in unique character voices, and always shows up in their unique motivations), my decades of experience in front of and behind the GM Screen, and my love of all things Roleplaying. I have played with the Rule of Cool long before it got its name, but as this is a Learn to Play, I will try to stick to the Rules As Written for the most part, but I can and do bend and break systems to do things they were never meant to do in the name of letting the players pull of that one cool thing they thought up that the system was never meant to simulate. I am your character's biggest fan from the moment I meet them. I want your characters to be Big Damn Heroes, and everything I do behind this screen is to help you do that. My Villains will be terrible, so that your confronting them can be glorious. My worlds will be full of evils both grand and banal, so you always have something going wrong you can make right. I want you to become Heroes with a Capital "H", and I will cheer on your characters every step of the way. I have a confession to make: I love combat. I am a relentless action junkie who loves nothing more than throwing your precious characters to the wolves - figuratively and literally! My monsters howl for your blood and will gnaw on your bones if you don't fight smart and watch each other's backs. I will use every system the game has to simulate deadly combat, but it must be said that I am more of a Theater of the Mind GM than a Tactical Grid GM. My favorite part of all, though, is the roleplaying. I live for that moment when I watch you become the character, speaking their words, affecting their mannerisms, and making choices that ring true for the Character above all. I invite you to a deep immersion with your character, and can't wait to see you become them. I look forward to meeting you and your Heroes!

How Overlord Jim creates a safe table
I run all my games and my server as a safe space for everyone, and both are explicitly and aggressively inclusive. You are welcome at my table if you can follow the game's rules and play nice with others. Pronouns and identities are to be respected, BUT we also do not take offense when people make honest mistakes trying to honor them. (I guarantee I will flub your pronouns at least once, but will always try to self-correct when I do) I WILL NOT tolerate people deliberately and intentionally making my clients - who often become my friends - feel unsafe and uncomfortable. This is the expected baseline for everyone in my games and on my server. You WILL be asked to leave the game and the server for deliberate offenses against the other players. I use a Pre-Game Survey to implement Lines & Veils. Once compiled, the Lines & Veils document will be posted on the Discord Server and reviewed as necessary, such as when new players join and their Lines & Veils are added. We will discuss them in Session 0. We use the X, N, and O Cards, and you can use them visually or submit X N & O Cards by PM, but the visual usually gets my attention faster. It is my usual practice to do a mid-game break, and we can do breaks as needed after intense scenes. I encourage high quality roleplaying and thus am prepared to deal with Bleed as it occurs. I often forget to do my Stars & Wishes, so please remind me so I get better about that. I am always open to constructive criticism, it's how I improve as a GM, and I'm always trying to run a better game than the last one. As you can see from the rather extensive set of warnings, this game can have a lot of dark spots. As I have noted above, the Sixth World of Shadowrun is basically what would happen if we made all the worst decisions possible, and there's a lot of ugly, mean, and all-too-human darkness in the Sixth World. Plagues far worse than the Pandemic we all lived through ripped the world apart. Racism gets turbo-charged when humans actually start becoming different sub-species. Magic is used for great and terrible things. And it's all still enslaved to the profit motive. The more things change . . . Something else to consider is that Shadowrunners are by definition, Criminals. Most Shadowrunning jobs involve some degree of trespassing, theft, breaking and entering, destruction of property, assault and battery, the list goes on and on. Shadowrunners are often violent, anti-social outcasts, but I am going to ask you to please remember that even they exist in a society that is not too dissimilar from our own - anti-social behavior is still going to get you in trouble, and if you don't cover your tracks, well, they do still have police, even if they are for-hire these days, and the court system still takes a dim view of vigilantes who commit crimes for money . . .
