About the adventure

This is a game for new and experienced 5E Dungeons and Dragons players alike, set in Forgotten Realms (a fictional setting that includes many iconic D&D characters and adventures, including the Baldur's Gate compute games). The players will start in the trade city of Scornubel, part of the theocratic kingdom of Elturgard, where the characters will quickly become drawn in to the conflict between deific powers. But it won't just be the deities and their cultists to contend with; the players will likely attract the attention of other nefarious organizations and even the stern, but notionally dutiful and just, Tormish clerics of Elturgard. Get ready to overcome challenges galore in a custom campaign. Ultimately, though, you'll have to make a decision, and the hint is in the campaign name.

About me

I've been an avid D&D player since I was a teenager, starting with AD&D back in the early 90s. I've dipped my toes in GURPS, Fantasy Flight's Star Wars, Blades in the Dark, and a few other systems over the years as well, but Dungeons and Dragons has been my favorite. I had been a dungeon master for a few adventures/one-shot games, but nothing serious. In recent years, due to geographic and covid-related separation, I had not been able to play D&D, and had quite the itch to do so. With no DM available, I took the plunge, came up with a campaign idea, crafted a storyline and characters for roll20, and started running a weekly session. The players liked it, and I've expanded to another campaign with different players-but the original campaign is still going, after nearly 4 years. My personal story is not terribly interesting. I was doing microbiome research until recently. I moved to a small city (sans institutions of scientific research, much less microbiome research) to care for an elderly and disabled relative. I'm hoping that my D&D campaign(s) can be a valuable enough experience that people would pay for them.

Character creation

Creating your character

I do a custom point buy system for the characters, and these values can be entered into Roll20. Use https://chicken-dinner.com/5e/5e-point-buy.html click on 'custom rules', then 'available points' up to 40, and 'Maximum Purchasable Attribute Before Bonuses' up to 16. Then click on 'calculator' and choose your stats. There are other races available other than those in the player's handbook, see: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races I think most of these could be worked into the campaign, but let me know if you want to play one.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will want an account on Roll20 and Discord. We can use a camera if players would prefer it, or stick to audio only.

What William Walters brings to the table

I do like to use background music (exploration, creepy, or combat, depending on the situation). I am no Matt Mercer, but I do try to use a variety of voices. As far as rules go, I'm mostly focused on having consistency, once we've decided what the best rule is.

Homebrew rules

I have a number of homebrew rules. Most importantly, I have luck points, which characters can use to modify rolls. The characters start with 20 luck points, and there will be more gained (diminishing numbers with leveling, and I'll award some for answering questions about events in the game). ***** Short rests are 10 minutes, rather than an hour. ***** I treat offhand attacks as part of your attack action, rather than a bonus action. *********** A character can reduce fall damage (by 1/2, rounding down) with acrobatics as a reaction: DC of roll = 0.50 * height in feet. The character is also not prone if they succeed on the roll. ******** Cones are 60 degree size (closest approximation to the rules) **************** Scroll use: automatically successful if you can normally cast the spell. If the spell is on your spell list, but you aren't high enough level to cast it, then you roll a DC 10 + [spell level] Religion or Arcana check (if it's divine or arcane spell) to cast the spell. If it's not on your spell list, you can try the same roll, but you had disadvantage on the roll. If you fail by 5 or more, the spell misfires in some way. Save DC when casting a spell from a scroll is based on your stat, 8 + your proficiency bonus + appropriate stat. E.g., if you cast a wizard spell it's going to be your INT stat that is used, a druid/cleric/ranger scroll would be WIS, and Paladin/warlock/sorcerer CHA ****************** Potions as a bonus action: You can keep up to 2 potions on your belt or otherwise easily accessible, and use one as a bonus action during a round. Add a "R" or something similar in the text next to the (up to) two potions in your inventory readied in such a way. ************ Knowledge Rolls for information about monsters: DC is 10+DC (rounded down) of monster Details will be based upon how much the roll exceeds the DC. Proficiency: History-humanoids, Giants Nature-Beasts, Elementals, Fey, Oozes, Plants Arcana-Aberrations, Constructs, Dragons, Monstrosities Religion-Celestials, Fiends, Undead Can identify a potion with an Arcana check (if character has alchemist tools skill, that could be rolled if preferred). DC starts at 10 for common potions and increases based upon the rarity of the potions (13 uncommon, 16 rare, 20 very rare). Spell scrolls identified with DC 10 + spell level Arcana check ************ Subdual damage: You have to specify that you're doing subdual damage, and the attack rolls are: -1 if melee with a blunt weapon, -2 in melee with other weapons, -4 for ranged attacks. ************* Firing when a target of the same size is directly in the path of your target: target gets partial cover, +2 to AC and reflex saves Firing when target is smaller than the friendly being that is in the path: target gets 3/4ths cover, +5 to AC and reflex saves Firing at a target in melee range with you is still at disadvantage.

Safety

How William Walters creates a safe table

I will provide a lines and veils document (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1918AQ0pDfdMcbECFGhxbUwOmkcQ6UhHHwhtPXe1tpYM/edit?usp=sharing). We'll do the following: 1: introductions 2: guidelines over content, both about what I am comfortable with DMing and making sure those boundaries are acceptable to the players. 3: player character creation. 4: player character background (long term and immediate background). I will use both direct messaging as a way to handle communications for an issue creating discomfort, as well as the roll20 Stop, slowdown, and Go cards that are built into that system (player preference).
