About the adventure

This was supposed to be a relaxing vacation—an all-expenses-paid 2-month luxury cruise touring the tropics of Taranha aboard the Moongilt Phoenix—but after days of rain and the worst storm of your lives, you awake to find the ship stuck on an atoll surrounding a tremendous, uncharted volcanic island covered in strange flora and fauna, and the ship's nav computer seems to indicate that you are no longer on Thaydia, far from the safety of the High Solarian Empire. With the ship's power and supplies, time is of the essence, and as the beating of drums in the distance gets closer each night, the crew of the ship has put out a call to all those capable to assist the survivors of the wreck and venture into Viria's jungles in search of supplies and aid. Viria the Verdant, first planet of Aura and nearest neighbor to Thaydia, is a tropical world of primordial life. Deep oceans and lakes carve through the planet's snaking fractal continents, weathered by enormous nightly storms, while volcanic ash blankets the sky and protects from the harsh solar radiation of the nearby star. The green world has long remained outside the grasp of the Thaydian Empire due to its hostile environmental conditions and fauna, while fragmented rebel cells from the ancient past have found homes outside of Imperial control within its towering canopies and mountain caves. But in its deepest ocean trenches, its most sheltered valleys, and its most remote calderas lurk monstrosities of unbelievable proportions: Kaiju. Said to have once dominated each planet in the Aura system, these enormous beasts were long thought extinct. But the shadows in the water, the shaking of the ground, and the bubbling lava floes that worsen day by day speak to the truth of their existence—and of their imminent return. And you may just be the only ones who can stop it. Protect the survivors and help them thrive, brave Viria's deadly jungles, and thwart the plans of an ancient evil cult bent on summoning forth the ultimate destruction, and search for a way to bring an end to your Unscheduled Getaway on Kaiju Island!

About me

Hi, I'm Opal, a queer game-maker and storyteller. I've had a passion for shaping worlds and telling stories since I was a child, when my friends and I would play pretend on the playground, on the bus, and in our backyards. When I discovered my first TTRPG (D&D 3.5) and introduced my friends to it, we were all hooked. You mean we can keep playing pretend as adults? AND we get to roll all kinds of fun dice, too? It was an instant addiction for us all, and I haven't been able to stop running games since. In the 13 years since, my passion for the hobby has only grown, and so has the Tabletop scene! I've played in numerous game systems, from Blades in the Dark and Scum & Villainy to Dungeon World and Monster of the Week to good old D&D 5e, and I've run several full scale campaigns in both Pathfinder 1e and D&D 5e. I love roleplaying games because of the connections with others, the stories we tell, and the constant surprises that line the path to the former two. At the table, our outside lives fade into the background as we forge new, meaningful connections with our tablemates and enjoy moments too perfect to have ever been scripted that will live on forever in our minds. I hope to tell some memorable stories with y'all, and maybe even inspire the next generation of artists and storytellers to keep up the tradition!

Character creation

Creating your character

Your characters will be created before the first session using the character sheet template hosted on my drive, the link to which is available on my Discord Server. Our first session will begin with a brief discussion of table rules and expectations as well as safety tools, after which we will jump right into the action. As such, I expect your characters to be completed before the first session. We will discuss character creation using text chat on Discord prior to the first session, but all characters will be created using the following rules: Create a Level 9 character using content from any partnered D&D 5e books as well as any content from the Grim Hollow 2024, Sebastian Crowe's Guide to Drakkenheim, Valda's Spire of Secrets 2024, The Crooked Moon 2024, and Steinhardt's Guide to the Eldritch Hunt books. Content from any other books is fine too with confirmation from me, but I'll need you to send me the information if I don't have the source book. Each character's stats will be generated with a 33-Point Buy (as opposed to the usual 27), and should be created using the Character Sheet Template provided in the References channel of my Discord Server. Each character will start with 65,000 gold pieces' worth of equipment, with no single item valued at over half of your characters' total wealth, with each item's price being calculated according to the 2024 DMG. If you need help determining the price of an item, message me on Discord and I will happily help. Once you have determined a list of items, just message it to me for approval.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need an account on Roll20 and Discord. You will also need a Google Drive account for your character sheet. You will also need to join my Discord Server.

What Opal brings to the table

I will be bringing lots of fun character voices and music for each session, as well as cool and fun maps for tense, tactical combats. I like to stick mostly to the basic rules of D&D 5e, but always with the notion that the rules are a framework for mutual fun. If you want to do something cool and it makes sense that you could do it, I'll usually be fine with it, as long as the spirit of the action doesn't go completely counter to the spirit of the rules. As an example, I would allow abilities that let you spend movement to teleport while Grappled, even though Grappled reduces your Speed to 0. Misty Step would work, so I think other teleportation should too. Above all else, I'll be there to put obstacles in your way with the express intention of you overcoming them with ingenuity, careful planning, and a lot of guts.

Homebrew rules

I will be referencing the Monsters of Drakkenheim book for rules regarding Eldritch Contamination as well as several additional conditions. I also reward Rogues with Extra Attack at Level 5, just like every other Martial, as I have found it doesn't negatively impact balance. I also have a list of custom items you can use for this setting, provided in the document in the References channel on the Discord server.

Safety

How Opal creates a safe table

We will be discussing the potentially sensitive themes that will arise in play in the first session, after which we will be utilizing an Open Door policy and a Digital X, N, and O card on Roll20. Each session will have at least one break during play, and after each session I like to go over Stars and Wishes with everyone and have a brief aftercare discussion.
