About the adventure

You are resting and relaxing in a shanty tavern, until you witness a young man in need of help. He introduces you to his grandfather, an old man wanting to discover the truth behind one last mystery before he dies. This mystery however, very well may be the death of YOU instead. You'll scale high mountains, dive into ancient caves, and witness unspeakable sights many will not believe. The biggest mystery here though, once everything is done, will you be able to return alive? --- The Prisoner of Pain is a short dungeon crawl taking place in The Forgotten Realms Setting. It is designed to take roughly 3 - 6 sessions to complete. You will start at level 3 and level up once through the Milestone System about halfway through. This is a more linear experience than my longer games, but the adventure overall is still very much in your court, with several branching opportunities before you. Despite it being a dungeon crawl, this experience is far more than just combat; you will need to accept the quest, prepare for the journey, and actually enter the dungeon—all of which might be challenges on their own. It is also important to note, that just like with all of my games, story and role-play will still be very important. With this game being so short, I have plenty of other campaigns that seamlessly link into this one, if you would like to continue the adventure!

About me

I'm Jelani! I also go by Jelly, or Jay! My job, is to weave you an experience you will take with you for the rest of your life; and I try to make sure every choice the players make, especially during combat, has purpose. I am accustomed to casual games for newcomers, extreme challenges for veterans, and anything in between—all under the 5e 2014 ruleset. My main goal is to have fun while creating a beautiful story with amazing people. I craft as much as I can personally for each of my games, but also use pre-drawn or purchased assets when needed. I either pick out character & background art that I am allowed to use for my games or I put it together myself using services like Inkarnate or Czepeku. All maps I use as well for my games are either free-use or I craft them personally. All music I use in my games are either free-use, a license that I own to use, or personally made by me using FL studio or something similar; I do not use or generate any AI material for any of my content. Though I don't have a lot of games on the site yet, I am extremely experienced as a DM with over 14 years of time as a game master for D&D and other systems. I am also transparent about my DM style and expectations moving forward; my #1 priority being that everyone is comfortable and accepted at my table. I exclusively run D&D 5e (2014) rule set at the moment, and am pretty strict on the rules. The rules I do bend however, I have listed out and am very clear on.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created during session 0. This is so that the players can talk the process over with each other, and everyone can be comfortable with the party that they are putting together. If they are not finished by the end of the session, then they will be easily finalized over the following week. I do allow imported characters, but they may need to be edited depending on the books and rules used for them. The books I allow are 2014 Player's Handbook, Xanathar's, Tasha's, Fizban's, both Mordenkainen's, and Sword Coast Adventure's Guide. I do not allow any Homebrew, Unearthed Arcana, or any other books. I also do not allow certain variant features from Tasha's or certain duplicate content that appears in Sword Coast's. When it comes to rolling up the character, I use The Point Buy System. I will gladly assist in making any backgrounds or stories for the characters if needed. I also do not rush any part of this process and will be 100% certain that everyone is prepared, and has what they need to succeed before we start officially playing.

The current party

The current party makeup is a Levistian Tiefling Forge Cleric, and a Winged Tiefling Shadow Magic Sorcerer. We are using 2014 rules.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players must know how to work both Discord and Roll20. You will be invited to my private Discord server where everyone there is or has, played in my online games. If you are a bit new to the platforms, then that is more than okay; I simply do not want to lose too much playtime in explaining basic function of the tools we are using. A little bit of guidance or help is completely acceptable though.

What Jelani brings to the table

I am very into RaW (Rules as Written) with only a few exceptions. As such, I will provide several books, shared through the R20 compendium; this includes The Player's Handbook (2014) as well as several other Player Books. I voice many of my characters, provide visual aid through my personal webcam, use custom music to paint the perfect scene, and provide ethically sourced and edited art for several scenes and characters. I create all the character tokens that will be used on the R20 board, using both free and paid online software. I also offer to assist in finding or making character art in some way for players if they so desire. Otherwise, I expect my players to provide me with some kind of art for me to use as a token.

Homebrew rules

I use very little homebrew for character class and abilities. I do use a couple of variant rules for the game itself: stacking advantage/disadvantage, climbing on large creatures, tumble, extra movement for diagonals, etc. All of which are gone over during Session 0 and can be reviewed at anytime during game. I also use bucklers, tower-shields, and some other custom items I've added here-or-there. But I do try very hard to keep player abilities true-to-form from the books. I alter monsters constantly to keep things fresh as well.

Safety

How Jelani creates a safe table

Lines and Veils are covered through direct messaging with Discord as soon as you join my game (no explanations needed). You will be completely anonymous to the other players when requesting these. In addition, they will be gone over at the start of session 0 or when a new player joins. I reference After Care by briefly ensuring my players feel safe and comfortable after each scene that feels a bit intense. I also make sure that my players know that they can speak to me at all times (before, during, or after game); they can talk to me about anything they need to.
