About the adventure

Chase escaped criminals through dim and crowded streets! Break out of a closed room when enforcers come to collect! Duel a wraith in a burning tenement! Unchain hostages as toxic water rises above their legs, their waist, their neck... The Last War is over, but the fighting has not stopped. The King's Citadel purges corruption in the name of king and parliament. But attempts to change the direction of the ancient city of Sharn have proved a dismal failure. Accusations begin to fly, and once co-operating forces find themselves at odds. Who can you still trust? Over the course of three daring adventures [Chimes at Midnight, Quoth the Raven, and Hell's Heart], you will race across the endless layers of Sharn, confronting proud villains, rescuing victims of treachery, unearthing buried secrets, and discovering your own potential. Dungeons and Dragons is a high-action role-playing game, with intrigue and adventure hiding around every corner. In 2023, an official basic variation was released, trimming legacy statistics for a streamlined experience capable of taking players directly to the action. Although it was originally made for short adventures, with a few careful tweaks it can preserve the all-action focus for an extended campaign.

About me

Hello, hello! I am Alexander the Hunter, an established Game Master with 8 years' GMing experience across more than 15 TTRPGs. There's a lot of good to be said of reading a good book, or watching a good film, but there's nothing that invigorates the soul like a group of compatriots huddled around a table telling a story together. The foundation of any successful adventure is built of buy-in, challenge, agency, and chaos. I have learned that every player has unique preferences for each category, so I make a point to practice a process of reflection with my players after every game session to learn what worked best for them. It's through listening and learning together that game groups create memories that will last a lifetime. I endeavour to create an open, inclusive environment of structured and collaborative storytelling. All killer, no filler. I do bend the rules on occasion, but only once it has become clear that the intentions of the gaming table and the intentions of the rules are at odds.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be selected from a short list during the Session Zero. Although the core features of a character have been predetermined, each character has a final ability selection, along with key personality and physical details left open to fill before play begins.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a discord account, as well as a working microphone and speakers. High audio quality is not required, but you must be consistently clear and audible. No preexisting knowledge of any edition of Dungeons and Dragons is required. Physical dice will not be required. All the tools will be managed in Discord and explained during the Session Zero.

What Alexander the Hunter brings to the table

I bring interesting, evocative descriptions of environments and critical actions during the course of play. I ensure there are always enough new tools in play to make every action scene a distinct and engaging experience. I avoid VTTs, cameras and character building websites, and favour a simple and streamlined experience akin to the pen and paper roots of roleplaying. I reward player agency, both in allowing any reasonable action to have a chance, and in ensuring that decisions made have not only an impact on simple success/failure, but the nuances of the outcome of the adventure as a whole. I am strict on rules that limit the GM, and loose on rules that limit player creativity. I do not come with a predefined list of house rules, but I am open to propose and implement changes when the stylistic assumptions of the rules do not align with the assumptions of my players.

Homebrew rules

The Peril in Pinebrook (2023) ruleset will be in use, with character capabilities extended for campaign format. All statistics that you need to know can be found on the pre=written character sheets, no external rules consultation required. The Peril in Pinebrook rules can be downloaded for free from Wizards of the Coast's website. A non-exhaustive list of differences that make the Dungeons and Dragons rules in Peril in Pinebrook (2023) different to the rules presented in the Player's Handbook (2014) include: - Ability Scores supplanted by Attacks and Skills - Turns cut down to Action and Movement to skip the checklist - No HP bloat - No daily Spell Slot indecision - Increased player choice as to effect when reducing a creature to 0 HP. My own tweaks to extend the lifetime of the system: - A starting character gets 6 skills instead of 4. - Playbook-style selection of special abilities. Pick 1 as a starting character, then gain another at the end of each adventure. - The Medicine skill can be used to treat wounds or counteract poison.

Safety

How Alexander the Hunter creates a safe table

I try to maintain the themes and content of the setting, which should provide a baseline expectation; Eberron presents a world plagued by century-old injustices, where misfits, outcasts, and rebels struggle for survival while battling monsters and political machinations alike, in a high-action environment where the flames never have time to die down. I will introduce the X, N, and O cards during the start of play as emotes that can be used in the discord server. They can be used at any time to signal individual discomfort. Players will have a choice between stopping for a short discussion to best suit their needs, or to excise potentially trauma-reinforcing content without another word. My games are also played with an open door policy, meaning that players can take a break at any time and will not face ridicule or derision. I encourage players to arrive early to socialise, mandate a single short break in the middle of a game to reduce fatigue, and offer players time at the end of each game session to discuss what participants enjoyed in a game and what they would like to see more of in the future.
