About the adventure

A storm is brewing under the oppressive eyes of the Lord Ruler as civil unrest builds. But, as a simple smuggling crew, you’re not part of such global conflicts. Well. Not yet. And when you do get involved, your actions may very well cause vibrations that affect other similar crews centuries later. Set on Scadriel, a planet in Brandon Sanderson’s literary universe called the Cosmere, Mistborn Legacy tells the story of two crews over the course of two separate timelines: a smuggling crew in the more classic fantasy Era 1 and a treasure hunting crew in the Industrial Revolution and Wild West themed Era 2. You will play members of both of these groups, with your actions in the first half of the campaign impacting your experience in the second half. Alongside familiar characters from the Mistborn books, you will take on the role of allomancers and feruchemists being swept up in a conflict bigger than they ever dreamed possible in this beginner-friendly campaign. Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere is a rich and expansive series, with over a dozen books set on various planets in the universe, all connected by a magical energy called Investiture. However, you don't have to be an expert on the universe to join! The great thing about playing characters just starting their journey in this wildly shifting world is that your characters don't know the rules of the setting either, so come as you are! I'm happy to be the Cosmere/Mistborn expert (I've read all of the books at least twice and spend far too much time reading about the series online) so you can just come along for the ride. Scadriel is a planet constantly on the brink of disaster, but there will always be unlikely heroes rising up to protect it. Heroes like you. Let’s see if you’ve got what it takes to fight for Scadrians past, present, and future.

About me

Hi y’all! I’ve been running games across a variety of systems for a decade, spending most of my time with Powered by the Apocalypse games, though I’ve spent my fair share of time with D&D 5E. My work as a GM centers player agency and celebrates diverse players, characters, and worlds, with a particular focus on making space for the queer community. My biggest success in the TTRPG space is producing Moon Harbor Heroes, a Masks: A New Generation actual play podcast, with a rotating cast of 24 performers, and our spin-off series, Moon Harbor Extended. My expertise, as mentioned above, is in Powered by the Apocalypse games: Monster of the Week, Monsterhearts, Thirsty Sword Lesbians, Avatar Legends, Babes in the Woods, and, of course, Masks: A New Generation. I also love exploring more indie games, such as Yazeba’s Bed and Breakfast, Die Laughing, Honey Heist, Anyone Can Wear the Mask, and Don’t Rest Your Head. My newest interest is the Stormlight RPG; as a massive Cosmere nerd, I’m excited to explore that world. I’ve run a few one shots and am eager to play more of it. Whether you’re a new player looking to play a game for the first time, an experienced player looking to explore an unfamiliar system, or a veteran looking for games to join, I’m your girl! Reach out! I'd love to help bring your stories to life!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will be creating characters during session 0. I will connect with each player prior to the session starting (once they have joined my Discord server) and get a general sense of the character so I can have a template ready for each player in Demiplane. Players are welcome to do this ahead of time, but there's no obligation to, as there will be time at the start to do this. I will have share all the materials via my Demiplane account so you don't have to bring anything. You're welcome to peruse the handbook ahead of time, but it is not necessary for character creation.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will have to join a private Discord server, which I will send a link to prior to the session. We will have a channel specifically for this group so you can post character creation thoughts, memes, whatever you'd like (that's appropriate to the group, obviously). Players are welcome to play with physical dice, but Roll20 does have rolling capability, which removes the need for a dice pool and any manual calculations.

What Tess brings to the table

RPGs are collaborative stories. I encourage my players to take ownership of these worlds, because you're as much a creator of it as I am (second, of course, to Brandon Sanderson, who gets all the worldbuilding credit). We are in this experience together, so I want you to feel that you have autonomy in it. (Well, not Autonomy, she's on a different planet, but the point stands.) Combat and roleplay are equally important in the Cosmere RPG, so I'll be giving both equal priority. I love finding ways to make things just a little harder (narratively) for the characters, because it makes the final outcome is all that much more worth it. Many of my players have started apprehensive about that but end campaigns with me asking me to make things worse; I've found that challenges make the outcome all that much more powerful.

Homebrew rules

I'm planning to use rules as written for the most part, but I'm always willing to rule of cool now and then.

Safety

How Tess creates a safe table

I have a Google Form of common Lines and Veils that I will send out ahead of time that my players can fill out. At the top of the session, I will give a few minutes for everyone to add anything they missed or anything that has changed, then I will read those out loud and post them in the chat. I also use the X card, which I encourage players to either message me directly or just say out loud. Because this isn't going to be on camera (and I'll likely be looking at multiple screens), I won't be able to see a visual cue, but I'll immediately check a Discord notification.
