About the adventure
In this short campaign, you are travelers that are just starting to get the hand of adventuring. Little do you know, you are about to become embroiled in a murder investigation where the culprit is targeting the most innocent victims imaginable. The city needs heroes; they need YOU. This game acts as the 2nd part of a series of adventures. It was handcrafted and designed solely by myself and play-tested with some friends. You do not need to play the previous adventure to enjoy this one however, and if your character survives, they can proceed into the next one if you wish. (Or you can make a new one of course!) Overall, I am very confident of these games, and very excited to share them! Below is the order of the games that I am designing: • The Prisoner of Pain, Levels 3 – 4 • The Old Doll, Levels 4 – 6 ← You are here! • The Curse of The Immortal Pirate, Levels 6 – 8 (Coming Soon!) • Country in a Cage, Levels 8 – 10 (Coming Soon!) • The Frozen Tomb, Levels 10 – 20 (Coming Soon!) • And maybe even more to come! --- The Old Doll is a short horror-mystery adventure taking place in The Forgotten Realms Setting. It is designed to take somewhere between 4 - 8 sessions to complete. You will start at level 4 and level up twice through the Milestone System throughout the game. This is, as mentioned, a horror-mystery game, and my darkest one yet. So, it is very important to note that there will not only be disturbing themes and imagery, but also the flow and direction will not always be obvious as you go through it. There will be times where you will need to ask questions on your own, and deduce facts without proper or obvious guidance. Perception is key, as there are other ways to be defeated other than to simply die in combat. Despite this being a mystery campaign, this is still very much Dungeons & Dragons. There will be dungeons to crawl through, monsters to slay, and much loot to be had. Mystery and horror is the focus, but this game still presents the main pillars that we all know and love about D&D.

About me
I'm Jelani! I also go by Jelly, or Jay! My goal, is to weave you an experience you will take with you for the rest of your life; and I try to make sure every step the players make, even during combat, has purpose. I am accustomed to casual games for newcomers, extreme challenges for veterans, and anything in between; all under the 5e 2014 ruleset. I try to craft as much as I can personally, for each of my games, but also use pre-drawn or purchased assets when needed. I either pick out character & background art that I am allowed to use for my games or I put it together myself using services like Inkarnate or Czepeku. All maps I use as well for my games are either free-use or I craft them personally. All music I use in my games are either free-use, a license that I own to use, or personally made by me using FL studio or something similar; I do not use or generate any AI material for any of my content. I am extremely transparent about my DM style and expectations moving forward; my #1 priority being that everyone is comfortable and accepted at my table. I exclusively run D&D 5e (2014) rule set at the moment, and am pretty strict on the rules. The rules I do bend however, I have listed out and am very clear on.
View Profile →Character creation
Creating your character
Characters will be created during session 0. This is so that the players can talk the process over with each other, and everyone can be comfortable with the party that they are putting together. If they are not finished by the end of the session then they will be easily finalized over the following week. I will be very clear about what sources can, and cannot be used for character creation; I will gladly assist in making backgrounds and stories for the characters if needed. It is important to know that I do not rush the process and will be 100% certain that everyone is prepared, and has what they need to succeed, before we start officially playing.
Party makeup will decided during Session 0. If you already have a character in mind, then that's perfect! We'll go over the details when everyone is together.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Players must know how to work both Discord and Roll20. You will be invited to my private Discord server where everyone there is or has, played in my online games. If you are a bit new to the platforms, then that is more than okay; I simply do not want to lose too much playtime in explaining basic function of the tools we are using. A little bit of guidance or help is completely acceptable though.
What Jelani brings to the table
I am very into RaW (Rules as Written) with only a few exceptions. As such, I will provide several books, shared through the R20 compendium; this includes The Player's Handbook (2014) as well as several other Player Books. I voice many of my characters, provide visual aid through my personal webcam, use custom music to paint the perfect scene, and provide ethically sourced and edited art for several scenes and characters. I create all the character tokens that will be used on the R20 board, using both free and paid online software. I also offer to assist in finding or making character art in some way for players if they so desire. Otherwise, I expect my players to provide me with some kind of art for me to use as a token.
Homebrew rules
I use very little homebrew for character class and abilities. I do use a couple of variant rules for the game itself: stacking advantage/disadvantage, climbing on large creatures, tumble, extra movement for diagonals, etc. All of which are gone over during Session 0 and can be reviewed at anytime during game. I also use bucklers, tower-shields, and some other custom items I've added here-or-there. But I do try very hard to keep player abilities true-to-form from the books. I alter monsters constantly to keep things fresh as well.

How Jelani creates a safe table
Lines and Veils are covered through direct messaging with Discord as soon as you join my game (no explanations needed). You will be completely anonymous to the other players when requesting these. In addition, they will be gone over at the start of session 0 or when a new player joins. I reference After Care by briefly ensuring my players feel safe and comfortable after each scene that feels a bit intense. I also make sure that my players know that they can speak to me at all times (before, during, or after game); they can talk to me about anything they need to.
