About the adventure

What look like rag tag group of cultists are laying waste to the town ahead of you. Above, circling on the air currents is a Dragon. Upon this sight, you charge into the fray, trying to save lives. The dragon looks to be searching for something, but what you can’t tell and that alone is worrisome. Afterwards as you help the townsfolk, you uncover more about this cult and realise they’re plotting something massive. Unbeknown to you, it is something that could see the rout of every city along the Sword Coast. Deep down you know that at all costs, the cultists must be stopped! You will in time fight Dragons and may even be a match for them, but the opening isn’t the place for that. As you travel through this adventure, you'll uncover what the Cult is up to, putting those pieces together like a jigsaw. Along the path you’ll encounter a multitude villains and as many helping hands. Not forgetting there will be plenty of loot to allow you to upgrade. This is D&D at its best: Tyranny of Dragons! A campaign that will take you from 3rd to 15th level. Should you survive the final battle we can go to 20th and beyond. The campaign brings together two wonderful adventures, the Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat. Set along the Sword Coast, you’ll have time to ponder as you travel and freedom of choice, as to how you shape the story. The village is still burning... time to do something about it!

About me

Hey there, my name is Jean-Paul and I'm known as Japes (jay-ps). I'll be your Game Master and a responsible for bringing the games together. Fair warning, I'm dyslexic and have a dry sense of humour. Both rule KO here… I’ve been running games since I was a kid. Back then it was just D&D, since then its beena blast running games like Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu, Vaesen, Discworld and recently Mothership. During all of those games I’ve found that the shared experience of these fantasy worlds is like a simmering cauldron: we all put our ideas in, and give it a gentle stir. Meaning at this table, there is plenty of room for your imagination to take flight... just don't be like Icarus! All the games I run are in a safe, creative space. All I ask from you is to be courteous to everyone in the game. It doesn't matter if you're playing a 1920s FBI agent in a Cthulhu Mythos romp, a piece of Sapient Pearwood in Discworld, or a Fairy Barbarian who growls at enemies, play them like you’re there. Join us in a game. I can't wait to see how your fun ideas work out.

Character creation

Creating your character

• 5.5e (2024) rules are in use • D&D Beyond will be used for character creation • Species & Classes options using many of the 5.5e (2024) books. • Ability rolls will be 4d6 dropping lowest. Any totals below 74, can be re-rolled, which is better than Points Buy. • Equipment: Starting as this is a new campaign. • Magical item: to be acquired If you’re joining after the start, your character will start at the same level as the party. We’ll have a chat about this in the 1to1 Session0.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

What I do hope you'll bring: • A desire to roleplay your character and be a cooperative player. • No need for a 'character voice', but this is a safe and welcoming place to give it a try if you'd like to. Equipment • A reliable PC with a Chromium-based browser. • A working gaming headset, or a mic and headphones. • A webcam as it really does add to the experience. • Free accounts for the systems we use. I'll send links once you've joined.

What Japes brings to the table

• I'll guide you through the game mechanics as we play, so there's nothing to worry about if you're still getting the hang of things. • I bring the NPCs to life with voices of their own, and love it even more when players join in too. • Colour, hand-drawn maps and all the great features FoundryVTT has to offer. • Background music, with the volume fully in your control. • Storytelling that brings real narrative suspense to the table. • A sprinkle of dry humour that gives every game its own unique flavour.

Safety

How Japes creates a safe table

• There will be a google form for Lines and Veils. This way the full list is brought to the table. • I'm committed to making these games inclusive for every player at the table. • We'll take a 5–10 minute break halfway through the session, plenty of time to top up drinks and snacks. • Should you join after the initial Session 0, we'll have a 1-to-1 session0 before you embark on the adventure. This is a paid session. • Please check the Content Warnings as these are things that are in the game. With that said other things that can be in the game will be discussed as part of Session 0 and can be worked around.
