About the adventure

Blades in the Dark takes place in Doskvol, a dark haunted Victorian city that uses lightning towers to keep spirits out. The sun hasn't been seen in almost a thousand years. You are a band of criminals, experts, and professionals, people who get things done, and don't mind skirting, bending, or shattering the law to do so. You will grow your gang of cutthroats, but beware, every piece of territory you take, a rival wants and will fight to take it back or steal it from you. But nothing is as it seems, as a score gone bad unleashes something ancient and foul within the city, and this force is after your crew and those closest to you. You and your crew will have to juggle between the politics of the streets, keeping their own turf, and protecting themselves against this unknown maleficence.... or perhaps your crew may choose to strike up a bargain with this ancient being. The options are endless and the city will react to your choices. Weather you are leaping across rooftop, planning a daring heist, or making dark forbidden pacts, the city is yours as long as you have what it takes to size it.

About me

I have been GMing for over a decade. I am a neuro divergent nerd, who enjoys crafting a compelling story with my players. I also love learning and playing new systems. If there is a game system you really want to try out or play in, let me know.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create characters during a session zero. Blades in the Dark doesn't have classes, but they have playbooks. We will create it together, and I can provide playbooks and reference materials. The playbooks available will be all the core playbooks. The players will work together to create their crew. The crew playbooks available will be Assassins, Bravos, a Cult, Hawkers, or Shadows. You are playing criminals, but what kind of criminals are you?

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will be playing on Discord and using Roll20.

What Dave brings to the table

1 - I believe in collaborative story telling, the players are an equal part of creating the world they play in. This is their story, I am the humble guide. 2 - Player agency - I may make suggestions if the players are looking for aid, but the players decide their roll. 3 - Open communication, let me know what direction you want to evolve your character, what story beats you want to explore, if it is within the scope of the fiction we should be able to work something out.

Homebrew rules

No PvP, your are a professional crew, loyal to each other. You don't have to get along, or even like your team, but you are stronger together then alone. The players do all the rolls. Normally the GM would make a luck roll, or engagement roll, I leave this to the players. Do you feel lucky? I do modify rules if they feel clunky. Rule of cool and a good story will outweigh mechanics. Right now I am using the core Blades in the Dark rule set, but I may incorporate deep cuts if it fits the fiction or the flow.

Safety

How Dave creates a safe table

We will have a session zero, to address themes and concerns, but I will also provide a check list to fill out to make sure the game is safe for everyone involved. We can discuss any lines and veils brought up with the check list (it will be anonymous) and we will have access to the X card via roll 20, but can be messaged, or held up. At the end of the session, we can talk about the session, anything to avoid, or anything you want to see. This can also be done after the session, you can always send me a message with feedback. We may need to take a break during the session to process events.
