About the adventure

Once every eight years, the mysterious Witchlight Carnival drifts into town on a warm evening breeze. It doesn't arrive by road or rail; it simply manifests, heralded by the smell of bottomless magic popcorn, the laughter of pixies, and a kaleidoscope of glowing tents that outshine the stars. For a single night, mortals can escape their mundane lives to ride giant dragonflies, feast on sugar-spun stardust, and watch marvels that defy the laws of physics. But this circus hides a twilight secret. The carnival is not just an amusement park it is a mobile, living gateway to Prismeer, a fractured and breathtakingly beautiful domain hidden deep within the Feywild. Many years ago, when you were just a child, you snuck into this very carnival without a ticket. You spent a night wrapped in pure magic, but when you left, you realized something was terribly wrong. The carnival had taken a toll. It stole your "Lost Thing." • Perhaps it stole your truest talent, leaving you forever clumsy or uninspired. • Perhaps it stole your sense of direction, leaving you perpetually lost in your own hometown. • Perhaps it took your ability to smile, your sense of fashion, or a priceless family heirloom you held dear. Exactly eight years have passed. You are grown now, but the empty space where your soul used to be still aches. Tonight, the calliope music rings out once again. The banners are unfurled. The ticket booth is open. This isn't just an adventure to save a magical kingdom; it’s a high-stakes, fairy-tale heist to break into the Feywild and steal your childhood back. The hags of the Hourglass Coven hold your soul in their withered claws. What are you willing to bargain to get it back? 🎭 WHY THIS CAMPAIGN IS UNIQUE The Wild Beyond the Witchlight is unlike any other official D&D 5e adventure ever published. It swaps gritty, blood-soaked dungeon crawls for a whimsical, high-stakes fairy tale where your choices genuinely alter the fabric of the world. • 100% Combat-Optional: This is D&D’s first official campaign that can be completed entirely without swinging a sword or casting a single damaging spell. Every encounter from minor disagreements with pixies to the final confrontation in the Palace of Heart's Desire can be resolved through diplomacy, performance, trickery, stealth, or clever bargaining. If you want to fight, you can! But if you want to play a pacifist monk, a fast-talking bard, or a rogue who steals secrets instead of gold, this is your ultimate playground. • A Living Fairy Tale: This campaign draws heavy inspiration from Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and the whimsical, occasionally eerie worlds of Studio Ghibli. You will participate in goblin fashion shows, ride swan-shaped paddleboats, bargain with talking beasts, and try to outsmart the Hourglass Coven a trio of bizarre, wicked hags who have usurped the throne of an Archfey. 🎟️ HOW TO JOIN Spaces are strictly limited so click "Book Game" to secure your ticket!

About me

I've been playing Dungeons & Dragons and serving as a Dungeon Master on and off since high school, around 15 years now. Over the years, I've experienced all kinds of games, from chaotic one-shots and classic dungeon crawls to long-running campaigns full of mystery, character development, and unforgettable moments. Through all of it, my favorite part has always been bringing players together and creating experiences that become stories people still talk about long after the campaign ends. I still remember my very first time playing D&D. I created an elf character and had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Like many new adventurers, I was completely confident in every terrible decision I made. I decided to run into a cave by myself without the rest of the party because I thought I was about to become the hero of the story. Instead, I quickly discovered a very important D&D lesson: heroes don't usually survive when they run headfirst into a pack of wolves alone. Needless to say, that character didn't make it very far, but the memory stuck with me, and it's one of the reasons I fell in love with the game. D&D creates those moments that are unexpected, hilarious, and memorable. As a DM, what I enjoy most is creating stories and building worlds that feel alive. I love creating locations that have history, NPCs that feel like real people, mysteries hidden beneath the surface, and choices that matter. I want players to feel like their actions shape the world around them rather than simply moving from one encounter to the next. Whether your party decides to save a town, investigate strange happenings in the shadows, or accidentally burn down the tavern after a terrible plan goes wrong, I enjoy adapting and letting the story evolve naturally around the players. My games often lean toward darker themes and atmospheric storytelling. Sometimes you'll find yourself exploring haunted ruins or uncovering secrets better left buried. Other times you may encounter mysterious figures, difficult choices, moments of humor, or unexpected twists waiting around the corner. I enjoy balancing tension, exploration, roleplay, and combat to create experiences that feel immersive and memorable. Above all else, I want everyone at the table to have fun. Whether you're a veteran player with years of experience or someone rolling dice for the very first time, everyone is welcome. My goal is to create a space where players can get invested in their characters, enjoy the world around them, and create stories together. I look forward to seeing you at the table and sharing the next adventure with you.

Character creation

Creating your character

COMPLETE CHARACTER CREATION GUIDE We want your character to feel like a living, breathing part of the story from the very first minute. To make things as easy and fun as possible, we will handle our character building together during our dedicated Session 0 directly inside Foundry VTT. Because I have integrated a massive library of resources into my Foundry server, you won’t need to look up rules across a dozen websites everything you need is completely built-in and ready to click! 1. Ability Score Generation: Balanced or Brave? To make sure everyone feels powerful and capable at the table, you have two distinct paths to choose from when generating your starting stats: • The Point Buy System: Perfect for tactical players who want absolute control over their character’s strengths and weaknesses, ensuring a completely balanced party dynamic. • First-Time Rolls: If you love the thrill of the dice, you can roll your stats live in the Foundry chat. You keep whatever numbers the digital dice give you on that first attempt let the fates decide! 2. Sources & Character Options: Standard & Beyond You will have access to a treasure trove of player options. Since I host all official Wizards of the Coast books and a massive collection of premium 3rd-party sourcebooks directly on Foundry, your build options are almost limitless: • Official Lineups: Everything from the Player's Handbook, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and Xanathar's Guide to Everything. • Thematic Choices: I highly encourage exploring the unique races introduced specifically for this adventure, such as the mischievous flying Fairy or the agile, leaping Harengon (rabbit-folk). - Premium 3rd Party Content: If you've been dying to try out highly acclaimed 3rd-party classes, subclasses, or backgrounds, they are pre-loaded into our game compendiums and fully functional with our automated sheets. 3. The Core Campaign Hook: What Is Your "Lost Thing"? Unlike standard campaigns where you hunt for gold, this adventure is deeply personal. As a child, you snuck into the Witchlight Carnival, and the hags of the Feywild secretly stole a core piece of your essence. You will select, roll for, or completely customize how this loss has shaped your life: • Lost Talent: Destined to be a master artist or musician, your creative spark was stolen, leaving you struggling with expression. - Lost Sense of Direction: You literally cannot navigate without getting turned around, driving you to finally seek answers. - Lost Emotion: The ability to smile, feel true joy, or maintain confidence was taken from you, leaving you determined to reclaim it. • The Feywild Trinket: You start the game with a bizarre, magical trinket left behind in your pocket a strange clue serving as your compass into the heart of Prismeer.

The current party

🎪 Current Party Composition: 0/6 Adventurers! The carnival gates are wide open, and our traveling troupe is currently a blank canvas waiting for your unique magic! Because this is a brand new adventure, you have complete freedom to bring whatever character concept speaks to your heart. Whether you want to play a whimsical Fairy bard, a displaced Harengon ranger, or a traditional knight looking for lost memories, all concepts are welcome. We will collaborate closely in our Discord server to weave your backstories together, ensuring everyone has a built-in reason to travel together through the mists of Prismeer. No matter who joins, this table will focus on a supportive, roleplay-heavy environment where everyone gets their moment in the spotlight. Bring your creativity, your curiosity, and your sense of wonder! ✨🌱

What to expect

Preparing for the session

🎟️ PREPARING FOR YOUR JOURNEY 1. Secure a Free Discord Account: We will use Discord for all voice communication, out-of-game chatting, and scheduling. If you don't have one, grab a free account at discord.com. 2. Join Our Private Campaign Server: As soon as you book your seat, check your StartPlaying inbox for a private invite link. Hop into the server, say hello, and jump into the campaign channels! 3. Check Your Tech (Hardware & Browser): Because Foundry VTT runs entirely inside your internet browser, you don't need to download any apps. For the smoothest experience, please ensure you use Google Chrome or Edge on a desktop or laptop computer (Foundry does not support phones or tablets). Bring a Working Microphone & Headphones: Clear communication makes for a great game! A decent headset or standalone microphone is required. We use a push-to-talk or crisp voice-activation setup to eliminate background noise. 5. Brainstorm Character Seeds: You don't need a finished character sheet yet! Just bring 1 or 2 loose concepts you find fun (e.g., "I want to play a sneaky rabbit-person" or "I want to play a fast-talking bard"). We will build the actual mechanics together inside Foundry during session 0!

What GM: Vale brings to the table

🎭 WHAT I PROVIDE & MY GM STYLE My main goal is to give you a smooth, stress-free game where your choices genuinely matter. I focus on creating an energetic, welcoming space for everyone, and I love building a collaborative environment where players can just relax and have fun. Here is exactly what you get when you join my campaign: Cutting-Edge VTT Technology • Lightning-Fast Hosting via The Forge: I host our entire campaign on The Forge, the premier cloud-hosting network for Foundry VTT. This means zero lag, instant asset loading, and 100% server uptime for you no clunky connection issues or slow load times. • The Ultimate Digital Library: You don't need to purchase digital sourcebooks. I provide full access to my expansive library of all official D&D books and premium 3rd-party player options natively integrated directly inside Foundry VTT for smooth, drag-and-drop character building. - High-Definition, Pre-Walled Maps: We use custom, beautifully stylized map packs featuring dynamic lighting, secret doors, and built-in line of sight that perfectly capture the whimsical beauty of the Feywild. An Immersive Atmosphere • Character Voices & Unique NPCs: From the eccentric, fast-talking carnies of the Witchlight Carnival to the ancient, unsettling hags of the Hourglass Coven, I bring every NPC to life with distinct voices, accents, and mannerisms to make roleplaying feel truly cinematic. - Dynamic Soundscapes & Music: Every map features curated ambient audio tracks (crowd noises, mystical swamp winds, chirping crickets) and cinematic soundtracks mixed directly into the virtual tabletop to heighten the emotional stakes of every scene. My Rules & Playstyle Philosophy • Roleplay & Agency First: Because The Wild Beyond the Witchlight is a masterclass in player freedom, I heavily lean into character-driven storytelling. I prioritize your character's backstory, personal stakes, and creative problem-solving over rigid dungeon crawling. • The "Rule of Cool" Over Rules As Written (RAW): While I have a deep, professional mastery of the D&D 5e system rules, I firmly believe that the rules serve the story not the other way around. If you want to try something wild, creative, or cinematic that isn't strictly covered by the rulebook, I will almost always say: "You can certainly try!" • Dynamic, Purposeful Combat: While this campaign can be completed 100% combat-free, any battles that do happen will be fast, tactical, and narratively meaningful. You won't find boring, repetitive "slugfests" here; every fight will have unique environmental hazards, clear stakes, and dynamic win conditions.

Homebrew rules

HOMEBREW RULES WE USE To keep gameplay fast, fun, and cinematic, we utilize a few common and player-friendly homebrew rules: - Tactical Healing Potions: Drinking a healing potion yourself gives you a choice. Use a full Action to get the maximum possible hit points automatically, or use a Bonus Action to roll for the amount normally. Administering a potion to an unconscious ally still takes a standard Action, and all other non-healing potions are always a Bonus Action. - Fey Bargains: Because we are in the Feywild, you can negotiate with certain fey creatures to trade abstract things (like your voice, a minor memory, or your luck) to escape a tight spot or gain unique, temporary magical perks. - The "Rule of Cool": If you want to do something creative, cinematic, and fun that isn't strictly covered by the written rules, I will always work with you to try and make it happen. - Maximized Critical Hits (Automated): When you score a critical hit, you deal max damage for your first set of dice, then roll the second set normally. Your crits will always feel powerful—and Foundry automatically calculates all the math for you instantly! - Fleeing the Fight: If a combat encounter goes south and the party decides to run away, we switch immediately from rigid initiative turns into a fluid, narrative skill challenge. This keeps escapes dramatic and fast-paced rather than a slow, punishing retreat. - Inspiring Teamwork: Instead of the DM handing out Inspiration, players can award "Teamwork Points" to each other at the end of a session when a fellow player does something incredibly cool, funny, or helpful. You can spend this point to gain advantage on a roll later. - Secret Death Saves: To make unconsciousness feel truly impactful and eliminate metagaming, you roll your Death Saving Throws privately to the DM. The rest of the party won't know if you are stable or one failure away from death, adding incredible dramatic tension to rescue attempts.

Safety

How GM: Vale creates a safe table

This campaign is a whimsical adventure, and my primary goal is to ensure everyone feels completely comfortable, supported, and relaxed while we tell our story together. We utilize a clear, structured safety framework to keep our games fun and stress-free for all players: - Dedicated Session 0: Before we roll any dice, we will host a comprehensive Session 0. We will spend this time setting expectations, discussing lines and veils, testing our Foundry VTT setups, and building our characters together so everyone is on the same page. - Structured Breaks (10-15 Minutes): Roleplaying takes energy! To prevent fatigue and give everyone a chance to stretch, grab a snack, or step away from the screen, we always take a firm 10-to-15-minute break at the midpoint of every session. - Open-Door Policy: My digital inbox is always open. If you ever have feedback regarding the pacing of the game, table comfort, or player interactions, you are welcome to message me privately at any time between sessions. We will also save a few minutes at the end of every game for a casual check-in to decompress and chat about our favorite moments.
