About the adventure

Step onto the Path of the Avatar and venture into Britannia, a realm of high fantasy where true legend is forged not by the dragons you slay, but by the choices you make. A subtle, insidious moral decay is creeping across the lands, corrupting ancient shrines and dividing its people. As destiny calls, you and your fellow pilgrims must journey across perilous wilderness, master the secrets of celestial moongates, and descend into forgotten megadungeons to recover the Lost Codex of Ultimate Wisdom and restore balance to the world. This adventure is a homage to classic, choice-driven tabletop RPGs with a heavy focus on moral weight, exploration, and tactical depth. At its heart, the campaign centers on the Eightfold Virtues—Compassion, Valor, Justice, Honesty, Sacrifice, Honor, Spirituality, and Humility. Every encounter is designed to challenge your party beyond simple combat metrics: will you grant mercy to a defeated foe, share your last rations with a desperate stranger, or uphold the truth when a lie would save your skin? Your decisions directly shape your character’s standing, the narrative trajectory, and how the world responds to your presence. You can expect a healthy mix of tactical grid combat, intricate environmental puzzles, and rich roleplay opportunities with a cast of fully realized NPCs. Combat is sharp and rewarding, but creative problem-solving and clever usage of terrain, spells, and reagents will always be celebrated. Player agency takes center stage in this open sandbox—there is rarely a single "correct" solution to any problem you face. This game is perfect for players who love classic fantasy aesthetics, deep lore, and meaningful character arcs where alignment isn't just a label on a character sheet, but an active mechanics-driven journey. Whether you are a tactical combat enthusiast, a dedicated roleplayer who loves rich NPC dialogue, or a completionist who delights in mapping out dark dungeons and decoding cryptic riddles, there is a place for you on this pilgrimage. Gather your gear, choose your path, and discover what it truly means to become the Avatar!

About me

I started playing tabletop games in the early 1990s and - despite many a hiatus - I eventually keep coming back to play some more. I originally started by playing BattleTech and WEG Star Wars but quickly transitioned into AD&D 2e and DnD 3e. Since then, I've played Call of Cthulu, D&D 4e and 5e, FATE, Exalted, and Heroes of Adventure. I am interested in PBP adventures and one-shots!

Character creation

Creating your character

We are using a homebrew thematic adaptation to determine your starting Ability Scores. During Session 0, each player will undergo a private "vision quest" narrated by the Game Master. You will be presented with a series of distinct ethical dilemmas, each forcing a choice between two competing Virtues (e.g., choosing Compassion over Honor). Your answers to these moral questions will directly determine your character’s starting Ability Scores (Point Buy equivalent) and recommend a starting Class. This ensures your character’s mechanical strengths reflect their initial moral compass. While the method of generating scores is homebrew, the revised 2024 D&D rules apply for final implementation. We will use standard character sheets in Discord. For source material, please prioritize the 2024 Player's Handbook (PHB) to keep the flavor grounded in classic fantasy. We will also be integrating a version of the Artificer from Eberron: Forge of the Artificer to represent our classic Britannia Tinker. Options from Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are welcome, but please consult with the DM first. Background choices and Origin Feats from the 2024 rules are fully supported to let you customize the exact character concept you are excited about. We generally will not be using material from setting-specific books outside of standard high fantasy (such as sci-fi-adjacent races or mechanics).

The current party

There are two options for playing this campaign. A player can take this on as a duet, or they can bring up to three friends into the mix to share the experience. No matter what, the weekly cost of the campaign will be $30. I will adjust the price per player to $15 if there are two of you, $10 if there are three, or $7.50 if there are four.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should have access to DNDBeyond and Discord.

What Joseph brings to the table

While this is not an exact port of the classic RPG, I will try to be as true to possible while working within the D&D system. I am strongly Rule of Cool but want to work with you to build the ultimate character (and, ultimately, party).

Homebrew rules

We will homebrew whatever is needed to make the game flow closer to the classic RPG if that is your goal. Otherwise, I'm all about potions as a bonus action.

How Joseph creates a safe table

1. Session 0: Setting the Stage Before we roll a single die, we will hold a Session 0 to align our expectations. We will go over: Campaign Tone & Themes: The style of the story we are telling and what to expect. Safety Tools: A quick walkthrough of our Lines & Veils and Open Door policies. House Rules & Etiquette: How we handle scheduling, rule disputes, and table behavior. 2. Lines & Veils (Pre-Campaign) The Document: Before Session 0, I will send you a link to our digital Lines & Veils document. How it works: You can anonymously or openly list your Lines (topics that will never appear in the game) and Veils (topics that must happen "off-screen" or fade-to-black). This is a living document we can update at any time. 3. Open Door Policy (Active Play) Your real life and mental health always come first. You are welcome to step away from the table at any point to take a break, grab water, or decompress. You never owe me or the table an explanation for taking care of yourself. If a scene is making you uncomfortable, simply let me know you need to step away or pause, and we will pivot. 4. Aftercare & Post-Game Check-ins Open Inbox: My direct messages are always open. If something felt off during a session, you can message me privately afterward, and we will adjust.
