About the adventure
A quiet coastal town. A forgotten empire. An evil that has slept for ten thousand years. Welcome to Rise of the Runelords, the legendary campaign that launched Pathfinder into gaming history—now completely reimagined for Pathfinder Second Edition with modern encounter design, cinematic presentation, and an immersive multimedia experience that transforms every session into an unforgettable fantasy epic. Your story begins in the picturesque town of Sandpoint, where the joyous Swallowtail Festival promises a day of celebration, laughter, and hope. But festivals have a way of attracting more than revelers. As goblin warbands erupt from the shadows in a savage assault, you'll discover that this is only the first tremor of something far more terrifying. Ancient secrets buried beneath Varisia are awakening, and forces that once ruled an empire of impossible magic have begun to stir once more. What starts as a desperate defense of a small frontier town quickly evolves into a sweeping saga spanning haunted ruins, cursed forests, towering mountains, forgotten cities, and impossible monuments left behind by the mysterious Runelords. Every victory uncovers another piece of an ancient puzzle, drawing your heroes deeper into a conspiracy that has been unfolding since before recorded history. This updated Pathfinder Second Edition conversion captures everything that made the original campaign a classic while embracing the fast-paced tactical combat, balanced encounters, and exciting character options of the modern ruleset. Community-created conversion projects have refined encounters, monsters, hazards, treasure, and progression specifically for PF2e while preserving the original story and atmosphere. Every session is enhanced with an extensive multimedia presentation designed to immerse you completely in the world of Golarion. Dynamic battle maps bring every dungeon and battlefield to life. Animated environments, atmospheric weather effects, orchestral soundtracks, ambient soundscapes, professionally selected artwork, dramatic visual handouts, custom tokens, and richly illustrated NPC portraits transform each encounter into a cinematic experience. Whether you're investigating a murder beneath flickering torchlight, battling monsters atop ancient battlements, or exploring the cyclopean ruins of a forgotten civilization, the world feels alive around you. Powerful virtual tabletop automation keeps the focus where it belongs—on heroic action and collaborative storytelling. Character abilities, conditions, initiative, lighting, exploration, and combat flow seamlessly, allowing players to immerse themselves in the adventure instead of wrestling with mechanics. Rise of the Runelords is more than a dungeon crawl. It is a campaign filled with memorable allies, tragic villains, political intrigue, ancient mysteries, moral choices, and moments of genuine heroism. Your decisions matter. The friendships you forge will shape the future of Varisia.

Meet the Game Master
About me
I have been running games since I was ten years old and have always enjoyed stories of hijinks and high adventure as well as the occasional creepy crawl into the shadowy abyss. I enjoy a wide variety of games and love to have a table filled with laughter. I have experience running games for players between 7 years old and 87 years old, if you need an experience tailored to your specific age group or other demographic, I would be happy to work with you to get just the game you are looking for. You can learn more about me and some of my games at my website: caithegm.com

Creating your character
Players can either select a pre-generated character at the time they sign-in, or they may build a character using Pathbuilder for Savage Worlds and the setting guidelines provided during session zero. Players joining after session zero should get with the GM more than 48 hours before the next session to get guidance on creating their character if they do not want to play a per-generated PC.
We will be running through all of the Runelords adventure paths in chronological order. This might be your only chance ever to play an epic multi-generational campaign arc in Pathfinder.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You are free to come in without any homework and learn as you play, it’s really easy enough that you don’t need to read a single page. You will need either a PC or Mac-compatible PC with broadband internet access and electricity to play in this game; a mouse with left and right buttons, as well as a third button and mouse wheel is optimal for online use of Foundry VTT. You will need a Discord account to access the game chat. The Foundry VTT runs on a modern web browser, so there is nothing to install if you have a browser on your computer. If you have an older computer, you might consider using the Foundry Lightweight Client, which is a free lightweight web browser that gives you the most bang for your machine's capabilities. You can get it for free here: https://flc.ruleplaying.com/ If you intend to speak in the voice channel on Discord, you should have a headset with a microphone. *You will be required to set up a push-to-talk button*; you are, however, free to communicate to the group using text only in Discord, but you will then need speakers to hear their chat and the game sounds. Special text-only sessions are available for the deaf and hard of hearing. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you'd like to schedule one. Bringing a friend or two would help ensure we don't need to recruit additional players. While text-only is actually my preferred method of play, it does seem difficult to organize those games. Instructions for setting up the push-to-talk button and installing all the needed software are available on my Discord channel (#getting-started), to which you will be supplied a link when you join.

How Cai the GM creates a safe table
This game is fantasy-adventure with a lot of hijinks, mystery, and hair-raising situations. Most of the action would be typical for a movie in the genre with a PG-13 rating, but it can occasionally get a little emotionally intense at times. Please consult the content warnings for this campaign and ensure that none of those topics are red lines for you. On the off chance that a player believes things have gone to far, we use a Yellow Card—Red Card system that any player can utilize if the scene is getting too intense; the use of these cards is done through clicking on an icon on the Foundry VTT screen, it is anonymous which player presented the card, but I will take immediate action when one is presented. A Yellow Card lets us fade-to-black and continue with the story on the other side of the disturbing content; a Red Card stops the game and invokes a 15-minute break. After the break, we can discuss what was going wrong and how we can best fix it for the group.
