About the adventure

Webcam Required!!! If you are not comfortable with this I am sorry, but after so many people canceling I'm adding this to the listing for all my games. The sun doesn't rise anymore. The people of Icewind Dale are hearty and took it in stride. Knucklehead trout still bite, the reindeer still march... but the herds are getting thinner. Trade from the south has all but stopped, and trust is in short supply. Something needs to change soon, or the north will become a true barren wasteland. The Tentowns left as frozen monuments to the brave, or foolish people that once lived there. In this survival horror adjacent campaign you will start by learning to survive in Tentowns against endless cold, terrifying monsters, and many factions vying for control of the dales. As you grow in renown and talent you will brave the tundra seeking ancient sites of power, uncover lost secrets, and possibly steal from a dragons horde. After besting many of the trials of the dales you must answer the question, how do you deal with a vengeful goddess? This sprawling campaign takes players from first level up to level 10-13. What the players choose to do or not do will forever shape the face of the north. What should you expect? 1. A healthy amount of combat and situational puzzles. Some situations can be solved with a few checks and offers of help, some can't. Did a Bard catfish a dragon in a previous run of this campaign? A little bit. 2. Freedom, to a point. The campaign has many quests, jobs, points of intrigue, and just plain rumors. All of these things are possibilities of stuff you could explore (Most likely you won't explore them all). If you go beyond them it stops being Rime of the Frostmaiden and just becomes a Homebrew campaign (not a bad thing, just something to be aware of). 3. A mostly linear end of the campaign, but with multiple possible endings. Once you reach around level 6 or so there are series of events/tasks that the book expects the players to take on. You can approach them many different ways, but to ignore them is to again move into a Homebrew campaign. 4. Your choices will effect the state of the north. Whether by chance or fate you are the heroes that get to decide what happens to all of Tentowns. The residents will do their best to aid you and survive, but without you all hope is lost. Before anyone is officially in the game (no matter what the system says) I will need to have a short to medium conversation with each player about expectations, their history with TTRPGs/D&D, and general vibes. In previous games these conversations have been between 40 minutes and 3 hours (usually it devolves to people happily talking about games they love for way too long). While we are playing a game together we are also creating a weird online friend group that could last for years. Making sure that the table is the right fit is hard, but doing it helps the game and everyone involved feel more at ease and relaxed (even in a horror game).

About me

Hello! I'm Brian, an approaching 40 year old male who has loved story telling my whole life but only recently found TTRPGs (D&D 5E specifically). After playing in a home game that fell apart cause life and family (it was all family members) I didn't play for over a year, which sucked. I reached out locally in my small town and didn't find people that wanted to take a chance, so I found a payed game online that I joined and played in for almost a year. Playing consistently with people that want to be there is an intoxicating experience and ultimately I want to help as many people as I can share in that experience. Since then I have started DMing games, completing a Curse of Strahd campaign and finishing a Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign. I've also ran a short Beast-Feast Daggerheart game (10 sessions) to help learn the system and give players a chance to try it. Currently I am running 3 campaigns, 1 Eberrron sandbox, 1 Curse of Strahd Vanilla (as few changes as possible), and 1 highly modified Curse of Strahd for players that have experienced the original and want something truly different. Things you should know about me 1. I find chaos very normal. I came from a large family where everyone talked over everyone all the time. This is both good cause I have a high tolerance for crazy in social situations and bad because sometimes I miss that certain levels of loudness, disagreement, and general chaos can be problematic for some people. I'm working on it. 2. I'm a dog person and my dogs may show up on screen. There are three and they are all the best. 3. I'm not your enemy, I'm here to help you tell a great story and have a blast!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will be using most of the books for D&D 5.5e minus Eberron: Rise of the Artificer feats. The Artificer class will still be allowed. Coming into session 0 please have at least 2 character ideas ready (class/species combos) but don't have a full backstory fleshed out yet. We will be starting at level 1, and all the characters will be built in Roll20. If there are very specific things you want access to from 2014 we can have that discussion but don't expect to have them.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Make sure you have a working Discord account, a Roll20 account, and basic things to play games on the internet. This includes a microphone, headphones/headset, a webcam, a working computer (phones and tablets don't work well), and internet access. For character prep you should have multiple ideas about possible characters, specifically class/species combos. We don't want players to be forced to play the same class unless both players want to and think that is interesting.

What Brian - AreWeBadYet brings to the table

Things you should expect - 1. Bad accents done with unearned confidence. I am not a trained actor but enjoy giving it my all even when the result is more comical than serious. Most characters in this setting will be more "serious" but some will have that comedic edge to help drive back the darkness. 2. A fairly extensive understanding of the rules, mechanics, lore, and story of the module. I expect to be surprised by my players but I don't think I will be caught flat footed. There are many moving pieces and sometimes I might need a moment to figure out exactly how the world and NPCs respond but I expect the world to feel consistent despite player shenanigans. 3. A DM that wants you to succeed. My hope is that you are able to complete the campaign, feel like it was challenging, and have told a story that felt unique to this group. Often I will tell you the risks of actions before you take them, if it makes sense to have the information. I won't warn you of a trap, but it you know a trap is there and accidentally move into that square I will remind you instead of just setting off the trap. You are the main characters and should feel like that throughout. Things I don't provide - 1. A complete library of all content from D&D 5E. I only started GMing in the last few years and I own the content for D&D 5.5E but not the back catalog of the past decade. I will have basic material (PHB and a few minor others) but some sub-classes and features won't be native on the client. I am willing to work with players to import stuff that feels appropriate but some features still won't be allowed. 2. I don't provide a space for you to fulfill your dreams at the expense of the party. If a character is "evil" it won't be a secret and they won't be pickpocketing the party members every chance they get. Characters can have interesting and conflicting motivations but we aren't free to ruin the game for everyone. If you try to build a character that wouldn't ever be part of the party I will ask you to try again or find a different group. 3. A true simulation. I will do my best to make the world feel real and lived in but there will be gaps. If I don't have a extensive list of every book on a shelf, when I made it clear either they don't matter or are mostly ruined, and you keep prodding that is called being a bad player. Please don't be a bad player. Additionally sometimes the world doesn't play by what we would think of as normal rules, which is by design. If it doesn't feel correct in the moment make a note of it and ask for more info later (possibly in a DM) so that I can either help you understand or if I made a mistake we can work on fixing it.

Homebrew rules

Not many starting off, some possible Paladin changes but those will be discussed with anyone that wants to play one.

Safety

How Brian - AreWeBadYet creates a safe table

Primary safety tools will be "lines and veils" which we will establish at session 0 and re-check throughout the campaign. If things begin to happen at the table that a player isn't OK with then we can employ the X Card to change what just happened (not changing rolls but changing the story so that it doesn't cause harm to the player). Additionally we will set expectations for player interactions such that even if your characters are having a difficult time working together the players are all on the same page and still enjoying the gameplay. If character bleed starts to take place we will back off and rehumanize the players and try to distance them from the characters. If a problem continues, changing how a character acts might be necessary for the health of the group (hopefully with a satisfying story reason as well). The most important safety tool is good communication from everyone involved. If some content is rough but manageable for a player I don't want to make that a central part of the story, but it may be alluded instead. We will be respectful of each other, try to extent grace when someone makes a mistake, and do our best to learn how to be a good table to play at together. Not every group is meant to play together long term and forcing a table to stick it out isn't healthy. Instead we want to create a positive, enjoyable, affirming, and learning experience for everyone.
