About the adventure
The Shadow of Undermountain: Welcome to Waterdeep, the Crown of the North, where glittering wealth hides a rotting core of criminal syndicates and corrupt nobility. A whisper sweeps through the city’s rain-slicked alleys: a vault containing a half-million gold coins sits hidden somewhere beneath the streets, waiting for someone clever enough to steal it. But in the City of Splendors, no secret is kept for long. To claim this fortune, you must navigate a lethal web of urban intrigue, outwitting rival factions, cutthroat gang leaders, and ancient secret societies who are more than willing to paint the cobblestones with your blood. Yet, the hunt for the gold is merely the threshold. What begins as a desperate search beneath the city's streets quickly erupts into a sprawling, continent-spanning chase that will drag your party all over Faerûn. From the deep, shifting nightmares of Undermountain to the farthest corners of the Forgotten Realms, you will hunt for secrets and face ancient horrors. The political schemes of a single city give way to a grand, perilous odyssey across the map, where reality-bending magic and the psychotic machinations of the Mad Mage himself threaten to reshape the fate of the entire realm. Who This Adventure Is For This campaign is custom-built for adventurers who crave a deep, high-stakes challenge where every choice carries a heavy price. If you love the tension of a clever heist movie combined with the epic scale of a grand, world-spanning fantasy journey, you will find your home here. We play a game where combat is highly tactical, environments are interactive puzzles, and the world reacts dynamically to your actions. There are no safe choices—only calculated risks. We lean into a dark, immersive, and suspenseful style of play. While there is always room for camaraderie around the tavern fire, the world itself is unforgiving. Expect a balance of dense, roleplay-heavy investigation, transitioning into a thrilling test of attrition, resource management, and wits as we plunge into the unknown. Will you outsmart the factions of Waterdeep and survive the perils of Faerûn, or will your party become just another forgotten warning etched into the wilderness?

Creating your character
Character Building & Stat Generation We want you to build the exact character you envision, which means we use more generous stat options and flexible customization rules. Point Buy Option: Use 29 points (instead of the standard 27). The maximum score for any stat before racial bonuses is 15. If you choose to drop a score to 8 or below, please discuss it with the DM first. Standard Array / Spread Option: If you prefer a set array, use 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 10. We hate the standard 8, so this array keeps your character well-rounded! Flexible Ability Score Increases (ASI): We do not use standard, restrictive race-based ASIs. Add your +2 / +1 (or +1 / +1 / +1) to whichever attributes fit your character concept best. Custom Backgrounds: Do not feel constrained by pre-set background descriptions, skills, tools, or languages. Customize them to fit your backstory. If you plan to add more than 1–2 extra skills, tools, or languages beyond standard background rules, just run it by the DM for power-scaling approval. Starting Level & Gameplay RulesStarting Level: This campaign begins at Level 2.Optional Rules: We generally utilize 5e optional rules, including Flanking. We are always open to rule suggestions from the table, so feel free to bring ideas! Starting Equipment & Magic ItemsYou start the game well-equipped for the dangers ahead. Please choose your gear according to these guidelines:Mundane Gear: Take any mundane items your character can and will actually use (e.g., if you have proficiency and plan to wear Plate Armor, you can start with it). Please do not abuse this to hoard gear just to sell it for gold.Magic Items: Choose two Uncommon magic items OR one Rare magic item. Most items are perfectly fine, but they are subject to DM approval. Note that we are strictly anti-flying items.Homebrew: We love homebrew! If you have a custom item concept, go nuts—we will work with you to power-scale it appropriately for the campaign.Consumables & Currency: Every character automatically starts with two healing potions and 50 platinum coins. Next Steps: Session 0All character creation and concept coordination will take place before the first official gameplay session. Our upcoming Session 0 is completely free, and we will use that time to lock in backstories, review homebrew ideas, and ensure the party is ready to dive into the adventure!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Before the Game To get ready for Session 1, please complete the following steps: Create a free account on both Discord and Roll20 if you do not already have them. Join the campaign Discord server. Discord will be used for voice chat, announcements, and general discussion. Join the Roll20 campaign using the invitation link. Roll20 will be used for maps, combat, handouts, and character sheets. Create a Level 2 character using official D&D 5e material. Upload your character sheet, token, and portrait to Roll20 before Session 1. There will be a Session 0 before the campaign begins. During Session 0, we will discuss character creation, campaign expectations, rules, and answer any questions. Test your microphone and internet connection before game night. If you need help with character creation or setting up Roll20, just ask before the first session.
What Frank brings to the table
As your GM, I aim to create an immersive and collaborative experience where every player has a chance to shine. This campaign will feature a mix of roleplay, exploration, mystery, dungeon crawling, and tactical combat, with player choices helping shape the story and the future of waterdeep. The game will include custom maps, handouts, faction quests, magical items, and unique encounters designed specifically for the campaign. Expect ancient ruins, political intrigue, dangerous enemies, and plenty of opportunities to interact with the world and its characters. Combat will be challenging and tactical, but creative solutions and clever ideas are always encouraged. While we will generally follow the rules of Dungeons & Dragons 5e, the Rule of Cool has its place when it creates memorable moments and keeps the game fun. Above all, this is a cooperative game. My goal is to provide a welcoming environment where players can tell an exciting story together, develop their characters, and enjoy a campaign filled with mystery, adventure, and unexpected twists.
Homebrew rules
Current House Rule (Cont.) e. Potions, Scrolls, Sigils, Tattoos, Upgrades, & Renown: --- Potions/scrolls are mostly standard. Healing potions can be used as an action (max hp healed) or bonus action (roll for heal). Mana potions exist; ask for details. --- There are tattoos & sigils that can be quite powerful. More info available later. --- Crafting approximates 5.5 rules (primarily Gold + Time). Tell us what you want & we'll advise. --- Magic items can be upgraded in certain shops. Ask for details. --- Renown matters. Interactions are often tracked. This OFTEN has consequences. f. The Honor System: --- For the integrity & fun of the game, play by the rules. Do not fudge rolls, add unearned advantages to your inventory, etc. --- That said, humans make mistakes. Maybe you forgot to add a book you found three sessions ago to your pack. Fix that small mistake. In the spirit of the game, you SHOULD HAVE that book! --- Arrows, spell components, rations, etc. should be in your inventory and tracked. However, do not sweat tracking perfectly. Instead, spend a few gold every week or two to represent keeping your quiver filled, food stores fresh, spell componets up to date, etc. --- However, certain expensive items, like those consumed for a spell, SHOULD be tracked. If the cost of a consumable is more than a gold here or there, track it. The big ones tend to be gems or Revivification, potions, and scrolls.. g. Critical Successes and Fails: We may apply these to all rolls (DMs discretion). h. (Heroic) Inspiration: When granted, you can add a 1d20 to ANY roll. Use these wisely. i. Mob Scaling: Some mobs have been changed drastically. Expect the unexpected!!!

How Frank creates a safe table
Player Safety & Comfort Creating a fun, welcoming, and respectful environment is important to me. This campaign is meant to be an enjoyable experience for everyone at the table, and player comfort will always come first. During Session 0, we will discuss campaign expectations, table etiquette, character creation, and any topics players would prefer to avoid. Open communication is encouraged, and players are always welcome to reach out privately if they have concerns or questions. We will be using the X-Card system throughout the campaign. Players may use the X-Card at any time, either verbally or through Discord, to indicate that they are uncomfortable with the current content. No explanation is required, and the game will move on without judgment. Feedback is always welcome before, during, and after sessions. My goal is to create a cooperative and enjoyable experience where everyone feels safe, respected, and excited to return to the table each week.
