About the adventure

Charnel House: The Wilcott Incident is a survival-horror Story focused on characters and narrative. It utilizes The Harbingers Roleplaying Game, a narrative-focused d10-based system that encourages custom abilities. New players are welcome! The Charnel House setting takes place in an alternate modern real-world, where there is a hidden "reality" alongside the world humans deal with on a daily basis. While it was always present, and previous leaks likely the source of countless fairy tales and urban legends, the current reality is the "barrier" is thinner than ever. In this Story, the players will be playing characters who are, for one reason or another, stopping by Wilcott - a remote, unimportant small town in Colorado. They will have to deal with what will be known as the Wilcott Incident, the start of a major change to the world as it is known by most - and how they deal with it is up to them. Do they look into the mysteries behind it? Rescue as many as they can? Or just run and try to stay alive?

About me

Hey! I'm Jansan, and I'm sure this is no surprise: but I adore TTRPGs! I've been a GM/DM/Narrator/Storyteller since I was a kid, and I've loved every second of it. When it comes to GMing, I focus on the characters, and the story. In regards to systems and mechanics, I tend to engage with that to the degree the players wish to engage with. I'm more than happy to do a tactical-style game, or we can engage in a story that keeps physical conflict to a minimum/zero and focus on drama or mystery. I'm a game designer and a writer, so my GMing style comes from that background versus a theatre or acting approach. I like to believe that gives me a good handle on narration and character design, but admittedly if you're looking for an all-star VA or funny voices that's not exactly my specialty. I'm also eager and able to learn new systems! I read the rulebooks for fun, so I'm always up for trying something new.

Character creation

Creating your character

CHARACTER CREATION PROCESS For The Harbingers RPG, players will receive a link to a character builder they can use to build their character (via Google Sheets). This information is then transcribed to Roll20 where the sheets will be attached to the tokens. The GM will handle this (though if players familiar with Roll20 would prefer to do that themselves, they may also do so!) CHARACTER INFO As this takes place in the real world and the characters are normal humans, no magical abilities or supernatural powers in the Harbingers book are available. They have been filtered out of the Character Editor. That said, subtle "supernatural-ish" abilities may be taken as Traits or Techniques if they fit. (ex: no flying or shooting magic, but fortune telling or sixth-sense style abilities are valid.) Custom abilities are encouraged in this system, and the GM will help any players bring their ideas to fruition. It is recommended to initially come with ideas (character's job, personal life, appearance, why they are in Wilcott, etc.) but the mechanics will be handled neatly through Discord and the Editor.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

REQUESTED PREPERATION 1. Please have or make a free Roll20 account. When playing, this will be the primary communication tool and houses all the virtual tabletop elements (such as dice). Link: https://roll20.net/welcome 2. Please have or make a free Discord account. The GM will primarily communicate through there between sessions, answer questions, post campaign info, etc. Link: https://discord.com/ 3. Please have a working microphone. Headphones are strongly recommended, as they help mitigate a plethora of audio issues, but are not required. The GM will be able to help test if needed. ADDITIONAL DETAILS 1. No camera is encouraged, needed, or required to ensure player comfort and safety. 2. No knowledge of the rules is needed or required (in fact, no knowledge is expected!) The GM will provide an overview on the basics and can answer any questions, and the rules will be made available. This will be done through Discord. 3. Characters will need to be created, but can be done with the GM's assistance or on the player's own with the provided editor. The GM is available to walk any player through the process as desired. This will be done through Discord. The Character Editor is a Google Sheet.

What Jansan brings to the table

MATERIALS For virtual tabletop, I use Roll20 which is free for players to use. I do have a paid GM account to have more space and a few extras, as well as custom character sheets. I set up event scenes, maps, tokens, music, and more to be used when playing. Music, background sounds, and sound effects will be available during play, through Roll20. They are optional - for sound effects, I will always describe the sound verbally after playing the effect. If you do not wish to experience them, you may turn them off. For verbal communication and out of game communication, I use Discord. Players will also be invited to a server with their own private channels for their group. This may be used as much or as little as desired. I use Hero Forge to generate tokens as well. I can incorporate player-created tokens on Hero Forge as well. For players who are artists or bring their own portrait and token art, I'll incorporate them for player tokens and portraits as desired. And finally, I bring the Story, the Narrator characters, and a sincere appreciation for your characters! STYLE The player characters are the main focus in my games, and I approach it from a narrative standpoint. There is an overarching story, but any personal stories players would like to include are welcome as well (provided they fit in the context and scope of the game). While sometimes I will address the group as a whole, I also tend to call on characters one at a time to get their actions. This is an opportunity to use the spotlight, or if preferred, to say "I'm unsure/watching/waiting" if you want to remain in the background. It's an option, definitely not a requirement if you would prefer to stay low-key. Taking as much time as wanted is encouraged - I use a narrative-style time system. While time will advance when your characters make choices such as travelling, exploring, crafting, or fighting, when you are merely speaking, I won't be counting seconds and minutes. You will have time, if desired, for character moments, monologues (external or internal), or just chatting with other characters. You are encouraged to speak up if your character wishes to do something, especially if I try to transition between scenes and you aren't done yet. I not only won't mind, I'll be interested! I will defer immediately in most cases (unless something else of importance is happening at the moment, in which case you can go right after that!) However, please do not interrupt or speak over the other players. Feel free to join in, though! Note: Apologies, I don't really do voices. I will speak as a character, and incorporate their method of speech, their vocabulary, and their tone and inflection based on the current context. I'm not a voice actor (or any kind of actor), I'm a writer, so my approach to characters is based on that.

Safety

How Jansan creates a safe table

SAFETY TOOLS Session 0 - Session 0 will be for character creation, questions, or discussions, and held in Discord by text leading up to the first game. If desired, the group can also meet in a voice channel (or one-on-one with the GM). Breaks - No set breaks will be in place by default, but a player may call for a break at anytime (if desired to ask for one privately, a message via Roll20 or Discord can be issued). Consent Checklist/Lines & Veils - The consent checklist will be paired with a campaign-specific Google form to determine what players wish to see or not. The campaign will be edited to meet the requirements of the players if needed. Open Door - Players may step away or leave at anytime, for any reason: pets, children, mental health, medical, or to take care of some other real-life issue. A "be right back/afk/gtg" will be appreciated verbally or in a text channel if within the player's capacity, and your character will slide into the background while you are away. Alternatively, the GM may call for a break if others also wish to take a break at that time. X/N/O - Players may send a digital message at anytime via Roll20 or Discord privately if events are proceeding in an unacceptable direction or are getting too intense. Action will be taken to make sure everyone is comfortable. Debriefing - The GM will check for feedback, questions, concerns in the Discord channels after each game. If there is feedback or concerns that would preferably be issued privately, direct messages through Discord are encouraged.
