About the adventure

High atop a 1500 foot cliff lies the ruined city of Arden Vul. Rumors are that the riches and artifacts found there could allow you live a comfortable life until the end of your days. However, what lies UNDER those ruins can bring you wealth and power to last several lifetimes. The problem is that venturing into those dark passages can quickly bring you to the end of your days. The devious traps and dangerous creatures populating Arden Vul will test even the most seasoned adventurer. So gather your gear, your courage, and LOTS of torches before taking your first steps into the greatest mega dungeon ever created. Arden Vul puts the MEGA in mega-dungeon! Just how enormous is it? To offer an idea of it's size, the actual play podcast crew 3D6 Down the Line (https://www.3d6downtheline.com/) spent over two years and 115 episodes in those dark and dangerous passages. After all that time they explored roughly 20% of the dungeon. Can you do better? Despite the virtual nature of this campaign, my intent is to lean into the "O" in OSR and make this as Old School as possible. To that end we will use an online shared workspace to create our "table". You will use your own physical dice (we all love our dice!). Combat will be furious, short, and primarily carried out using theater of the mind. Lastly, if someone is up to it, I would love to see player mapping when needed. My tables are fun and friendly! I encourage moments both epic and silly. I'll create a safe space for role-playing and lead the way with voices for NPCs. Rarely will there be only one way to overcome a puzzle, foe, or trap. Outside the box ideas are always welcome! There is a chair available for you. Please have a seat and be welcome!

About me

After semi-retiring two years ago, I've combined my two favorite hobbies of storytelling and tabletop gaming by becoming a professional GM! Collectively I have 8 years of experience as a GM with the bulk of that time taking place during my college years. I rediscovered TTRPGs after attending GaryCon with a friend. Over the past year I’ve created two adventures for two different systems, run 28 hours of games at three conventions, and run numerous hours of games for family and friends both in person and online. I’ve really jumped back into TTRPGs with both feet! And there are a couple of reasons for that. First, I was enamored with the simplicity of many of the TTRPG systems available today. Second, I embraced the concept of player agency. Put together these two things make my job as GM much easier allowing me to focus more on creativity and making the adventure/setting/world really come alive.

Character creation

Creating your character

Old School Essentials is based on early editions of Dungeons & Dragons. It's simple and deadly. Brains will keep you alive longer than your blade. Learn more about the system here: https://necroticgnome.com/pages/about-old-school-essentials Characters will be created as part of a free Session Zero. However, prior to creating characters, we will all take some time to introduce ourselves in order to get to know one another and ensure that we are all a good fit to start this journey together. The Player's Tome is not necessary as we will walk through each step of the process together. Players joining after the start of the campaign will create a character with me outside of a regular session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Discord will be used for video and voice. A separate server for this campaign and will be used for offline messaging, session summaries, in game calendar info, and our lists for Lines and Veils. Invites to the server and other online tools will be sent when there are enough players to start. Good sound can make all the difference during an online session. If you have a separate mic, please consider using it.

What Your Story Gaming (Graham) brings to the table

A fun and safe table where creativity and role-playing are welcomed and encouraged! No long tactical combats. No railroading! NPC voices. A strict adherence to the Rule of Cool (as long as it doesn't interfere with anyone's ability to have fun). Despite the distance between us, I want to make this feel as much like a "at the table with pencil, paper, and dice" experience as possible.

Homebrew rules

I will employ an alternative experience system called Feats of Exploration. It offers several other ways in which the party will earn experience and can lead to faster level achievements. Learn more about this system here: https://3d6-down-the-line.itch.io/feats-of-exploration In addition, A character reduced to zero or less HP will roll on the Death & Dismemberment table created by Josh Burnett. https://bernietheflumph.blogspot.com/2013/11/death-and-dismemberment.html?m=1

Safety

How Your Story Gaming (Graham) creates a safe table

Safety will be discussed during Session Zero. A Lines and Veils document will be created between Session Zero and Session One allowing for players to contribute anonymously. The document will be posted so it is accessible by everyone and will be reviewed frequently. During a session there will always be at least one Break but there will always be an Open Door for players that need to step away for any reason. X, N, and O's will be messaged to the group or to me directly using the chat window.
