About the adventure
The land of Thul lives under the harsh and unforgiving rule of the Church of Saint Omalia the Mageslayer. You now face the fate all criminals, heretics, and magical beings fear most: imprisonment in the mysterious island prison of Veridi Mare. Countless doomed souls have tried to break out, but none have survived the attempt. Once you heard the guards whisper that a magistrate will soon arrive to deliver verdicts to you and the other prisoners, you knew there was only one course of action left for you. You need to escape tonight or die trying. But beware, Veridi Mare is host to a dark secret that threatens to undo the very fabric of Thulian society and the Omalian Church.

About me
I'm an actor, writer, and comedian who loves to bring stories to life and collaborate with other creative people. I've been roleplaying and GM-ing for over 10 years. I started playing Pathfinder with my improv team, but I've grown to prefer the streamlined ease of D&D 5th edition so that my players and I can focus on the story unfolding rather than math and mechanical crunch. Most of my players in my home games are Dungeon Masters themselves (several of whom are professionals themselves) but I'm also comfortable introducing new players to the game and helping them learn the ropes. I'm funny, creative, and tactical in my approach to every game. Ever since I was a kid, I've always had a desire to create new games for my friends to play and storied worlds to lose myself in, but I never had the perfect outlet for that drive before I discovered the world of ttrpgs.

Creating your character
Players will be level 4 characters who have committed or been accused of a crime which could be anything from petty theft to heresy or even spellcasting. Character sheets should be created using Roll20 with stats and all other important rolls happening via the Roll20 digital dice for the sake of fairness and transparency. If you do not like the stats you rolled, you may instead choose to use either point buy or standard array. As you will be starting out in a prison cell, you will not have immediate access to your starting equipment but will have the opportunity to recover it. I use 2014 rules (including most expansion materials) but if you feel particularly attached to something from UA or 2024 I'm open to considering it if it doesn't skew the balancing too badly or clash with the 2014 ruleset.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need to join a Discord Server as well as a Roll20 page, but that's about it.
What Ben brings to the table
I use ambient music and character voices to help provide immersion into the world of the game. Combat will be challenging and tactical, but not overly punishing so long as you make smart-ish choices. I'm very much a lover of Rule of Cool, after all we're here to be creative and have fun with it.
Homebrew rules
I use flanking rules, but because this is just a one-shot, I don't think any other homebrew will be needed.

How Ben creates a safe table
I use a lines and veils form to anonymously gauge the comfort levels of my players and adjust accordingly. I also like to check in with my players before, during, and after games to make sure everyone is having a good time. If at any point a player feels uncomfortable with what is happening in game, they are encouraged to either speak up in the moment if they feel comfortable doing so or send me a private message so I can pivot and fix whatever the issue is. My table is first and foremost a safe and respectful environment, and players who cannot match that energy will be removed.
