About the adventure

Are you curious about Pathfinder Second Edition? Do you want to test out the waters of "Mathfinder"? Do you like big numbers and a system that has a rule for just about everything? Come learn the basics of Pathfinder Second Edition! You'll be able to select a pre-generated 1st level adventure from a variety of classes and be guided through how to play the game. You will face puzzles, obstacles, and monsters as you venture into a basement to discover what creatures and mysteries lurk beneath. You do not have to have any previous experience with any role playing system in order to join! Don't worry about figuring out your character's voice or backstory, this session will focus on the rules and how the game is played. The beginner box adventure spans two floors of a dungeon which each take a session to run. If we have a more experienced group coming from D&D 5E or who have previously played through the first floor we will start on the second floor of the dungeon at level 2, either leveling up an iconic character yourself or I can provide it for you at level 2.

About me

I've been playing TTRPGs for 18 years and mainly DMing them for 8 years. I prefer running the game to playing. I started with D&D 3.5 and now run Pathfinder 2E. I've also run F.A.T.E, MÖRK BORG, Deadlands, and Dungeon Crawl Classics. I've played Call of Cthulhu, Vampire the Masquerade, Dungeons and Dragons 4th and 5th editions, and a handful of other systems. I have almost all of the PF2 books and I do my best to be as familiar with the rules as possible, but there's a lot so there are moments I have to look things up. I love introducing new players to the game! For longer running campaigns I expect players to be familiar with their character sheets and the related rules so they don't cause slowdowns during play. I run my main group in person with set pieces and minis, but I also run a weekly game online using Foundry. I also ran games remotely a ton during the pandemic (who didn't). I like 3D printing and painting models, but I also love taking time to set up Foundry to provide a great experience for players. I love gritty dark fantasy and one of my favorite settings is Dark Sun, which I ran a D&D 3.5 version of for over 2 years. No matter what setting I am running little bits of Dark Sun will slip in. I am also in love with Pathfinder's Golarion and spend many hours pouring over the Lost Omens books. If something is remotely related to the game I am running I will read every scrap I can get my hands on.

Character creation

Creating your character

You will not need to create any character before joining. Once we have a group and time set you will each be allowed to pick from a list of pre-generated characters from Pathfinder's Iconic Heros, which are the characters you will see in most of Pathfinder's art and read about in Pathfinder stories. There are 23 you can choose from, so you should be able to find something interesting. Some classes are easier to play than others, so I'll work with you to make sure you find something suitable for your experience level.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need to have Discord installed with an active account and join a server that I will provide to you. Once you are in the Discord please make sure that your name in the Discord server matches your name on Startplaying. You should watch this tutorial on PF2 in Foundry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzobL67MJNM It's not fully up to date on the latest version and some things will be different, but it will give you a good idea. I will also provide you with access to Foundry before the session so you can log in and click around.

What Josh Vlk brings to the table

I will be using the Foundry PF2 beginner box module from Paizo: https://foundryvtt.com/packages/pf2e-beginner-box This includes detailed maps, walls, lighting, and sounds. It will provide a great experience for players new to the system and to Foundry. I will adjust the combat as we go to be challenging without being too difficult. This adventure will stick closely to the rules so you can learn the system, so don't expect the "rule of cool" to come into play.

Homebrew rules

You will start with 3 hero points and additional ones will not be given out during the session.

Safety

How Josh Vlk creates a safe table

This adventure is very mild, but you can expect typical fantasy violence and combat against monsters. Reach out to me if any of the content warnings might be an issue for you and I can adjust the adventure if possible. We will have a brief session 0 at the start of the adventure to set expectations, and if you choose not to continue I will not charge you for the session.
