About the adventure
"The Spiderweb" playset gives us dark alleyways, organized crime, systemic poverty, and young adult drama as you fight to protect your neighbors and loved ones. In this timeline, superpowers, magic, cosmic forces, and all of those classic fantastical elements of superhero stories never popped up. In their place, powerful crime lords took hold of the city. Each of them struggling against the others for dominance. These gangs battle for money, territory, and control as they exploit the people of this city for their own gain. The worst and most powerful of them all is The Spider. The city is his Web after all. Rumor has it that strange and unexplainable events have been happening all around Halcyon. People with glowing fists that shoot fire. Dark figures moving through the sky like birds. Robbers ripping doors off hinges. No one is sure why, but things are starting to change. Now those things are happening to you. You are one of the few with the guts to do something about the bastards who think they run this city. Maybe you have powers. Maybe you don't. But one thing is for sure, you can't win this fight alone.

Meet the Game Master
About me
Hey there! I'm Kendrick or Kendo, whichever you prefer, and I want to be your Game Master! Quick things you should know about me: I'm a 30 year-old, queer, neurodivergent, black nerd who's been playing TTRPGs since 2012. I love body horror, political intrigue, improv comedy, mecha anime, and the weird places where fantasy and sci-fi meet. I started my foray into TTRPGs playing D&D 4e in high school when a friend of mine got me into watching the Counter Monkey series on The Spoony Experiment. Hearing him recount tales of friends and strangers coming together to tell the wildest stories possible always made my heart race as I yearned to do the same. Now I can. Nowadays, I primarily run lots of non-D&D-esque TTRPGs like Monster Hearts 2, Rapscallion, and Kids on Bikes. Though I prefer using Tales of the Valiant or Chasing Adventure for my heroic fantasies, I still love getting down and dirty with D&D 5e. I'm mostly known for being on the marketing team for Kobold Press and as the creator and GM of the queer-horror actual play podcast, Tales Yet Told. If you want to get a sense of how I run things, you should check it out. https://www.TalesYetTold.com

Creating your character
Before the session 0, take a look at all of the playbooks and choose 2-3 that you'd be interested in playing. We'll create our characters and our neighborhood together during session 0. This campaign will be using "The Spiderweb" playset from Masks: Unbound. It's street-level heroes in a world where many of the fantastical elements of superheroes are still new or don't exist...yet. Most playbooks can still be used, though some may need some minor changes. However, here are a list of the playbooks that are not available due to the nature of the setting: Doomed, Legacy, Nova, Outsider, Brain, Harbinger, Innocent, Nomad, Soldier, and Star. Fan-made playbooks may be used with prior permission from the GM.

How Kendo creates a safe table
This game has the potential to touch on many difficult topics such as organized crime, drug & alcohol abuse, the effects of poverty on communities and families, and violence against young adults. Our goal is to safely explore these topics in a way that gives players agency over their story while still allowing space for challenging themes and content. ~ ~ SAFETY TOOLS ~ ~ LINES/VEILS Players will receive a link to a shared Lines/Veils sheet that will act as a living document over the course of our campaign. You are encouraged to fill it out before our Session 0 to set a foundation for our safety discussion. STORY PALETTE We will also be using The Palette tool (I originally discovered this through Microscope by Ben Robbins) to further define what specific concepts and themes we want to explore together. We'll fill out the palette in Session 0. X, N, & O CARDS During session we will be "X, N, & O's" to signal how we're feeling during play and if we need to stop to discuss what is happening above table. POST SESSION DEBRIEF At the end of every session there will be space for a debriefing and for stars, wishes, & sparkles as we reflect on the time we had together.
