About the adventure

Starfleet is assembling a crew to patrol the Romulan frontier, protect Federation interests, and preserve the fragile peace along one of the most dangerous borders in known space. Players will serve as officers of the bridge crew aboard the Federation Polaris-Class Light Fast Exploratory Cruiser USS Azimuth (NCC-93616), recently refitted for long-range patrol, reconnaissance, and frontier operations. Assigned in 2272 to Starfleet Border Operations in the Argelius Sector, the USS Azimuth stands watch along the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone, conducting deep-space patrols, responding to colonial emergencies, investigating unknown phenomena, and monitoring potential threats from beyond Federation space. Following the events of the Enterprise Incident and renewed contact with the Romulan Star Empire, the frontier has entered a dangerous new era. A single sensor contact, misunderstood transmission, or careless decision could threaten decades of uneasy peace. The Azimuth's mission is not only to defend the Federation — but to prove that Starfleet's ideals of exploration, diplomacy, and restraint can survive even in the shadow of old enemies. This will be a teaching game for players new to the Star Trek Adventures® system by Modiphius, or new to role-playing games in general. Players will portray members of the senior bridge crew aboard the USS Azimuth, taking on the roles of Starfleet officers responsible for guiding the ship through tense encounters, scientific mysteries, diplomatic crises, and the challenges of life on the frontier. In addition to their primary characters, players may also portray Supporting Characters from the ship's lower decks — security personnel, junior officers, enlisted specialists, engineers, scientists, medical staff, and other crew members who step forward when their expertise is needed. If a mission does not require the direct involvement of a player's main character, that player may select a Supporting Character better suited to the assignment. The Chief Medical Officer might portray a security specialist during a tactical boarding operation, a communications technician during a surveillance mission, or a science assistant investigating an unusual phenomenon. The First Officer might portray a junior engineer crawling through damaged maintenance sections during an emergency repair, rather than personally supervising a task better handled by the ship's specialists. This approach allows every player to participate fully in each episode while showing the entire crew of the USS Azimuth as a living community of Starfleet officers and enlisted personnel. Every crew member has a story, every station matters, and sometimes the fate of the Federation

About me

Greetings! I am James, AKA DM_Shroud. With a rich experience of 49 years in nearly a hundred roleplaying games, starting from the days of Classic Traveller in 1977, I've crafted countless adventures across a myriad of genres of gaming. My gaming library boasts an extensive collection of systems, but I have a particular fondness for narrative-driven space operas like Traveller Mongoose (2e), Star Trek Adventures, and Star Wars Saga, and Fantasy Flight, as well as fantasy games like Over the Wall, Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, D&D 2024, Song of Ice and Fire, and One Ring. As a Professional Game Master, my mission is clear: to deliver an exciting, engaging, and memorable game experience that balances quality with affordability. This isn't just a hobby for me – it's a passion-turned-profession, fueled by my goal to better support my family and fund my children's college education. Versatile Gaming Schedule: I offer various gaming sessions, including introductory sessions. My schedule is flexible, accommodating different time zones and preferences, with prices listed with each game (Not including Stripe and SPG Fees) per player/ session (First Character Generation session, as well as 1st play session are FREE) , if it's a new game that I'm not familiar with or not set up for, $20 per player per session for a custom game setting or campaign. I'm NOT typically available on Friday evenings, or Saturdays, USA times, since I spend weekends in the Mountains with my family...but query me, maybe we can work something out. Custom World Design: Beyond guiding games, I'm also a skilled fantasy and sf cartographer. Whether you're an author needing a vivid setting or you run or have a playgroup desiring a unique world, I can craft detailed maps and worlds tailored to your specific imagination. Please contact me with your needs, I can work with you on developing a quote, and we can arrange payment through this site. We can also set up an interactive mapping session where you guide me as I work on your map in realtime, using any of a number of mapping software tools. A Bit More About Me: My journey into the fantastical began as a young sci-fi enthusiast, inspired by the likes of Joe Haldeman's "Forever War". When not orchestrating epic adventures, I'm often found designing fictional solar systems or mapping fantasy worlds at all scales, continuing to fuel my lifelong passion for science fiction and fantasy. Invitation to Adventure: I invite you to dive into the worlds I've created and join me in crafting unforgettable stories. Whether you're a seasoned player or new to the realm of RPGs, there's a place at my table for you. Welcome to my mind – let's embark on an extraordinary journey together!

Character creation

Creating your character

Pre-generated characters of various ranks, skills, responsibilities, and individual personalities will be provided as pre generated characters, but players can meet with the game master at least 2 days prior to the next scenario with an outline, or some basic ideas for a character that we will develop.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A working microphone with good sound quality will be required, webcams are optional but not required. No need to read rules ahead of time. This is a teaching game so the game master will teach as we go. All dice rolled will be virtual dice.

What James (DM_Shroud) brings to the table

The game master has hardback books of Star Trek Adventures first edition by Modiphius, including the core Rules book, Command, Operations and Sciences division books, and all four quadrant books as well as Captain's Log: Star Trek Solo Adventures.

Homebrew rules

Some specific game rules have been augmented such as attack patterns for combat, various kits for characters like engineering kid field surgery kit, to act as assets on the ship or in the field. Multiple ships are not going to be Star Trek alpha or beta Canon. This is 2272 so no synthetic Android characters or Klingons or Romulans. Especially no Romulan spy PCs dressed up as Vulcans to blend in with the crew... that isn't going to happen. No Jedi crossover characters. We will make active use of Supporting characters from The core rules and Supervising characters from the Lower Decks Campaign book.

Safety

How James (DM_Shroud) creates a safe table

Players can expect to play in character for the majority of play, except for questions about skill or combat task resolution in accordance with the tropes and expectations of Starfleet officers within one of the Paramount television shows or films. The themes planned are light-hearted, strongly heroic /swashbuckling Space Opera epic Adventures, with occasional darker scenarios similar to what was seen in episodes of the Original Series, The Next Generation, but not as dark and gritty on a regular basis as Deep Space Nine. At least passing familiarity with Star Trek is recommended but not strictly required. Please note that the game master will not accept "secret Romulan spies who are acting like Vulcans" or "Klingon agents with changed genetics deeply embedded in Starfleet." Ground combat and space combat will be normal and expected components of each episode, and player knowledge of space and ground tactics as set forth within the Star Trek universe will be helpful but not strictly necessary. Puzzles per se or riddles and similar will be a minimal part of each scenario, if at all. There could be scenarios which will involve deductive science or inductive logic, or exploration and clues discovered to illuminate the matter at hand. No role-playing experience is necessary, this is planned to be a teaching game. Veteran players of Star Trek Adventures or prior Star Trek role-playing game editions (FASA, Decipher Star Trek, Last Unicorn Games) will be welcomed. The game master also asks that the players respect the campaign and try not to have arguments over Star Trek Canon, as there are too many books, films, and television series to keep track of it all. The flavor here is going to be solidly Original Series, so let's stick with that... The game master further advises that the basic tenets of Star Trek will not be violated by the game master. No request for cross-genre fantasy or other Space Opera intellectual property characters will be honored. There will be no Space Orcs, nor Force powers nor lightsabers from Star Wars in this Star Trek campaign. Additionally I want to emphasize again: no Vulcan officer characters who are actually disguised Romulans trying to undermine the Federation.
