About the adventure

Snow falls on a quiet New Year's Eve in the border city of Gate Pass. Drakus Coaltongue, immortal and all-powerful ruler of the Ragesian Empire, is dead. His successor, the Supreme Inquisitor Leska, has unleashed her mage-hunting Inquisitors across the continent - anyone who can cast so much as a cantrip is to be taken to Ragesia for "questioning." Any nation suspected of harboring mages now stands in the path of the Ragesian war machine. Only a small resistance, led by the continent's foremost academy of magic, stands against the Scourge. You and your companions have been hired by a priest from the south — supposedly a member of that resistance. Your mission will be revealed tonight, at the tolling of the New Year, at the Poison Apple Pub. Whatever it is, you're certain it has something to do with stopping Ragesia and protecting every mage on the continent. The War of the Burning Sky is an epic fantasy campaign that will take players from level 3 to level 20. Start from humble beginnings, but watch your team rise to challenge dragons and devils. I've run this campaign all the way through before, and I am aware of what it takes to keep the story (and the table) together for multiple years. I will be weaving your character's backstories deeply into the plot of the adventure, so you will always feel connected to the world. The world itself will change and react to your character's actions, and by later levels the party will be real powers in the setting. And of course, I will be setting up multiple Session Zeros throughout the campaign to maintain clear communication and keep checking in with my players. There are some sensitive topics in the setting, and it's always going to be my priority to make everyone at the table feel welcome and comfortable. Join the table if you want to: - Travel through a forest that's burned for forty years- and put an end to the suffering of the people trapped inside. - Flee from an undead dragon in a flying chariot above a crumbling castle, while an army marches below. - Climb atop a sentient, city-leveling superweapon as it hurtles through the skies; and fight a lich for control of it. If you're tired of oneshots with little character development; if you want a real story you can sink your teeth into for years to come; or if you want to experience an adventure where you can shape the fate of the world- then this is it. I'm excited to see you at the table!

About me

I've been playing D&D since high school- beginning with 3.5. I've been behind the screen for more than ten years now, and in that time I've mostly stuck to long campaigns. I know you've probably experienced campaigns that fizzle out in five sessions because nobody has a clear direction for the story, but I'm afraid I can't relate- my games have a strong narrative backing and always put your characters first.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be taken care of at Session Zero, but we will be making level 3 characters with point-buy stats and all 1st party 5.5e sources. Please show up with either zero character concepts or two character concepts- don't come to Session Zero with one character you are dead set on playing. Character creation will be done as a group.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need to create an account on Roll20 and join the campaign server on Discord. Links to the Roll20 VTT for Session Zero will be put in the Discord server. Other than that, please make sure you have a good quality microphone/webcam.

What Dave brings to the table

I like to run published modules because it keeps the table on solid ground. I can bend the story around your backstory or whatever crazy thing you did last session, but there's always a main plot that everyone knows we can return to. I've run multiple years-long campaigns on Discord and Roll20, and I am particularly fond of introducing new players to the game. I find that it's important to know the rules back to front, so that you know when to break them for the sake of the story. Narrative comes first. I run a table that strikes a balance between the traditional three pillars. I try to makes sure combat, roleplay, and exploration all get a share of the spotlight. I like to spend time building deep and tactical combat encounters with win conditions that aren't just grinding down hit points. But what I love most is when a player gets hooked by an NPC or a piece of my world's history and starts pulling on that thread themselves. If that sounds like your kind of table, you've found your place.

Homebrew rules

I have a list of small homebrew modifications that we will go over during Session Zero. All official 5.5e sources are allowed, and all other homebrew rules will be approved on a case-by-case basis.

Safety

How Dave creates a safe table

The campaign will begin with a Session Zero, and we will have additional Session Zeros as needed throughout the adventure. We will also use Lines and Veils along with a sensitive topics checklist. I will always encourage open communication between my players and especially with me.
