About the adventure

Grit and Ire is a gritty rules medium fantasy TTRPG system perfectly matched for the setting and adventure scenarios. Character (toon) sheets are managed via website expediting and simplifying record keeping so that players can focus on immersive in-character role-play. In-game challenges and scenarios press use of a myriad of non-combat skills and magic to get by in a complex dangerous war-torn world where violence is not always the wisest course. Combat, if necessary, is quick and brutal. Play begins in a place most recently known as the Kingdom. It's name is up for debate now. The King is dead. He and his army were decimated by an invading humanoid horde from the Lost Cities in the west. The people in power here now are not native kingsmen. They come from the Free State, the last human civilization standing in the Lost Cities. Their activities center on Kingstown, the old capital. They intend to establish a new state governed by their own laws, second only to the Horde Queen's. Not all hope is lost for loyalists as remnants of the King's forces and their allies rally in the south and east, holding a few forts, towns and Estown: the gateway to greater Es and the Middle Kingdom. So, where is your place in these disputed lands? Do you stand with the kingsmen loyalists? Or would you know more of the peace these freemen have bartered with the Horde Queen? Or will you serve other causes and masters, or perhaps you mean to simply fill your purse? Whatever choices you make, remember, that in a situation like this, no one, maybe not even you, is necessarily who they say they are.

About me

I was born in Portland, OR USA. I moved to Japan after college and lived there for about 20 years. The last few years I've spent as much time as i can in Brazil living there off and on but also traveling many other nations . I speak Japanese and Portuguese fluently. My love of adventure and exploration spans both fantasy and reality. I started playing 1e and later 2e as a teen in the early 90s. I played D&D, Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Gurps and shadowrun in college and was the president of RPG club. I was GM early and it stuck. Later as new systems and ideas came about I played many systems including PbA, SW, FATE and games those ilk as well as wargames and many indie games. I have played hundreds of systems and love trying new games and setting ideas. During COVID I played in and ran some 5e games online but couldn't get into it fully because of its many issues. I have created my own TTRPG and setting for it. I made a game that I think covers what doesn't exist and is needed. Besides gaming, I play Capoeira and have traveled the world attending punk, anarchist and Capoeira events. I am an active member of several grassroots anarchist and/or cultural organizations and regularly volunteer time to support community action efforts at the local grassroots level. As you could expect I like CRPGs and read fantasy avidly. I watch all the major films and series like Witcher, GoT etc. as well. My proudest accomplishment is being a father to my sons who both live and work in Japan now.

Character creation

Creating your character

Free sign up (no personal info needed) at www.gritandire.com to make your toons. There are templates available and there will be a session 0 to help players make characters (toons), use the website and get acclimated to use of discord. Play may start in the session 0 depending how quickly all players are able to acclimate and decide their toons.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please read the introductions in the core rules and player guides and skim the information. IF you wish to play a magic using character please read the magic guide. Sign up for discord and www.gritandire.com if not already signed up. It will help if you at least start to make a toon or look at some templates on the website. Adjustments will likely be made to that toon in session 0. It is okay if you wait until session 0 to officially decide and make your toon for play. Feel free to make as many toons as you like just to learn the system/have fun. It will be helpful if manuals are purchased on drivethru (they are VERY cheap right now) but for new players I can provide free test-copies. Test copies of manuals are not updated. drivethru files will be updated for free in perpetuity to all early adopters. I am a 100% independent artist. I just hire a few freelance artists for help here and there. There is no profiteering or major corporate process going on. Just me trying to survive as an indie artist. Thank you for your understanding and contributions, however small.

What ShiffD brings to the table

I provide an immersive and complex set of scenarios to work through with your characters. I do use rough visual and audio assets to provide feel and mood but most scenarios are simply described and/or voice acted by me. I use dice rollers on discord usually. If the group is comfortable rolling offline and 'rule of trust' we will do that (discussed in session 0). Video is not required but allowed and because of the complexity of shared contents and variability of peoples' connection quality I generally do not present myself in video. I may ask players to turn off their videos if we have connection quality issues. I generally provide simple photos. I find that this is the most reliable way to handle online play= simple photos of reference and voice/theatre of mind + specialized website support for toon sheets to keep records. For larger more complex combats I will use simple battle maps. I try to avoid using too many platforms but it depends on my player group and what platforms they are already accustomed to. I prefer to keep it simple but if people are already acclimated to a particular platform we may migrate there (such as roll20) over discord for complex battles. Most of the time such capabilities are not necessary and combat can be handled with a simple battle map image reference and theatre of mind. On occasion I build out scale models with legos and use photos of those for my battle maps. I need to be clear- My general mode is discord only but I WILL listen to my players and change platforms IF a group is in agreeance on preferring another platform- including but not limited to = roll20, fantasygrounds, teams, googlemeet, zoom etc. I have experience with all.

Homebrew rules

My entire system, setting and adventures are created by me... However I may use some free online resources for graphics or sound assets to enhance the play experience. At least 80% of the material will be original and provided by me.

Safety

How ShiffD creates a safe table

We will go over game content violence, gore and sexuality in session 0 as a group. In general I do not allow gratuitous imagery or expression of gore or sexuality. Contents will be R rating at the extreme end. Def. nothing worse than HBO would play, and probably a lot less. I will clarify here that my game contents do celebrate and include diverse genders and relationships. Players uncomfortable with the idea and inclusion of non-hetero relationships and gender fluid characters in games should not join. 2SLGBTQI+ players and characters are welcomed and celebrated just as they are. We will use a temporary 'x-card' (type or say x) style time-out procedure in play. This can be sent to me as direct message anonymously. When this is triggered I expect everyone to stop play/expression/posting in regards to game content that was being played. We will only continue/proceed play when all players are comfortable with content and we have resolved/cut the issue/trigger. I will also discuss baseline rules for player-to-player out of character interaction in session 0. (0 tolerance for hate and harassment, 0 tolerance for unwanted personal contacts (will discuss in session 0)). In the case that conflict is caused by game-time out-of-character player-to-player interaction, I may exclude 1 or both parties from further play if they cannot resolve the conflict (accepted apology/agreeance to not trigger further/clear up misunderstanding/intents) and I will instantly boot anyone violating my 0 tolerances (this will be clarified in session 0 what I mean by 0 tolerance for hate, harassment and unwanted personal contact). Of course I defer to startplaying general guidelines and procedures on these matters as well. My games are meant to be a safe space for everyone.
