About the adventure

Three months after Kuvira's attack on Republic City, Detective Baha discovers evidence that a superweapon has fallen into the hands of some very dangerous people. Unable to operate officially outside of his jurisdiction, Baha recruits a plucky airbender thief, a firebender bruiser, a back-alley waterbender healer and a genius burglar. As one of these heroes, you'll have to use your quick wits and fantastic abilities to retrieve the superweapon and even make a quick yuan or two. This oneshot is set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra, and it is set after the end of Korra's Book 4. We will be using the Avatar Legends system, which focuses on storytelling and providing creative freedom for players. This is the perfect introduction to the system or to roleplaying in general. I will explain all of the rules as we play, and we'll also take a little time at the beginning to go over who your characters are and how they work. This is a great system for parents and children looking to get into roleplaying, because of the accessible rules, vibrant characters and world, and the exploration of universal themes in a mature but approachable way.

About me

I'm a British writer, former teacher and stage performer living in Switzerland. The first time I ran a game of Dungeons & Dragons for children, it began with a bar fight and ended with a dragon being punched in the face. I've run RPGs for hundreds of people, but the violent urges of grown adults never compare to the seven-year-old boy playing a dwarf who lived in the woods with his army of bunnies. Playing RPGs can make you more creative, more empathetic and more confident, but sometimes you just need to punch a dragon in the face. I run games for players of all ages and experience levels in every system under the sun, including D&D, Mothership and Avatar: Legends. I am a qualified English teacher and an amateur standup and improv comedian, and I bring that same energy (and patience) to my games. As your GM, I make it my mission to tell a story that truly belongs to you. So if you’re looking for games where you really get to dive into your character’s backstory and their relationships, where discovering your character arc is as important as saving the world, then you’ll love my games. Sometimes, the real prize was the friends we made along the way.

Character creation

Creating your character

I have created five pre-made characters for you to choose from. I will share all of the character sheets and their backstories in Discord before the session starts. If you would like to create your own character before the session, that is also fine, but please let me know before the session. I can share the blank character sheet with you to fill out yourself, and then please send me your completed character so I can add them to the Foundry VTT session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Let me know your Discord username or message @jimangi on Discord. I will then add you to the group chat for the game. When we play, I'll invite you to join my Foundry VTT server in your browser. I recommend joining on a computer because Foundry works best on a monitor. You don't need to make your own account for this.

What Jim the GM brings to the table

I will explain all of the rules as we play, and I have access to all of the Avatar Legends content. If you want to know more about the game, feel free to message me. I follow the Rule of Cool when playing, and I believe in 'failing forward'. A roll should always move the story in an interesting direction, whether a character succeeds or fails. Rolls and combat move quickly in my Avatar games, but they should always be exciting. I bring sessions to life with dramatic voices for NPCs and bombastic descriptions of action. I like to involve players in setting scenes too, so we create the world together.

Homebrew rules

Since this is only a oneshot, I may simplify the combat rules to make sure we finish the whole story in four hours. If you join one of my campaigns, I will explain the full combat rules. I adapt the 'Rely on Your Skills & Training' Basic Move to allow players to use it with Stats other than Focus, based on what they want to do. For example, players can use their Passion if they use this Move to break something. I made this change because my players found they used this Move far more than any other outside of combat, and it put characters with low Focus at a disadvantage. This change helps every character's personality and skills shine through.

Safety

How Jim the GM creates a safe table

The tone of the adventure will be similar to the original Last Airbender and Legend of Korra cartoons. This means it will be appropriate for children but may engage with some darker themes There will be a ten-minute break in the middle of the session. Players can request a five-minute break at any time. We will use the X and N card system to provide an easy way for players to halt play, change a scene or move on if part of the game makes them uncomfortable. It’s crucial to me that all players feel comfortable and have fun. Before the one-shot, I will send all players an anonymous form where they can share their topic exclusion and wish list.
