About the adventure
The sky is a jagged wound over a dying world. On the ruined planet of Xul, the sun has been choked out by the soot of a thousand burning pyres, leaving a wasteland of obsidian sand and jagged metal. From a throne of cold iron and calcified bone, The Desecrated Sovereign—a necromancer of unspeakable power—rules over a kingdom of the dead. You are not the chosen ones. You are the Raiders: the desperate, the daring, and the doomed, drawn to the forbidden Nightmare Lands by the promise of forbidden magick and the glint of ancient gold. Our journey begins in the Hideous Halls of Mugdulblub, a sprawling, neon-slicked tomb of filth and forgotten sorcery. This is the opening track of a lethal, overarching campaign where every dungeon cleared is a step closer to the Iron Citadel. Will you stand against the tide of the undead to break the Sovereign’s grip, or will you prove your ruthlessness and claim a seat at the right hand of The Desecrated One? In this world, the line between hero and horror is thin, and it’s usually written in blood. This is Shadowdark played at maximum volume. We embrace the "low-fi," high-octane spirit of 1980s heavy metal fantasy. Expect a game where the torch-timer is a ticking clock, the monsters are intelligent predators, and the loot is guarded by terrors that don't care about your backstory. We play fast, we play fair, and we roll in the open. If you’re looking for a heroic power-trip where success is guaranteed, look elsewhere. Raiders of the Nightmare Lands is for the players who want to feel the adrenaline of a near-death escape and the glory of a hard-won victory. Whether you are a veteran of the old-school pits or a modern player ready to test your mettle against a truly lethal world, the gates are open. Sharpen your blade, check your rations, and pray to whatever gods are left listening. The Nightmare Lands are waiting, and they are hungry.

About me
I’m a 50+year-old teacher with a PhD in Literature & Game Studies. My dissertation focused on how we build worlds through role-playing games. I’ve just spent a lot of time thinking about how to make imaginary places feel real, dangerous, and worth exploring. I’ve been behind the screen since 1983. I grew up in the "Metal" years of the hobby—the era of lethal dungeons, weird monsters, and high-stakes adventure. I’ve seen it all, from the rise of the first editions to the newest 2024 rules, and I still love every minute of it. My DM Style: 50/50 Role and Roll I believe the best games happen when we balance a great story with a great challenge: Role-Playing: I love creating fantastic worlds that encourage you to inhabit your character. I want your choices to matter and your narrative to feel epic. Roll-Playing: I’m a fan of tactical skirmishes. I love moving miniatures (virtual or real) and watching players use strategy, cunning, and a bit of luck to overcome impossible odds. New Players are Always Welcome Whether you’re a veteran or this is your first time picking up a d20, you have a seat at my table. I take pride in being a "Newbie-Friendly" GM. I love teaching the mechanics and helping people find their footing in the hobby. I’ll guide you through the rules so you can focus on the fun. The "Old School" Edge Even though I’m welcoming to new players, I still have that OSR soul. I believe a win feels better when you’ve earned it. Expect adventures that present real risks and genuine challenges. I’m not here for a "power fantasy" where success is guaranteed—I’m here to help you tell a story of survival and glory. If you’re looking for a professional, inclusive table run by someone who knows the history and the heart of the game, I’d love to have you. Just remember: the dice have no masters.

Creating your character
We will create characters together in a Session Zero session...of course, you might have to create a few more characters during the campaign! Stats will be rolled using the Shadowdark ruleset. We will use all of the canon Shadowdark rules in the published zines (and campaign supplements) published by The Arcane Library.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Preparation Checklist Roll20 Account: We will use Roll20.net as our battleground. If you don’t have one, sign up for a free account. Discord Server: This is our lifeline. We will use Discord for voice chat. Ensure you have the desktop app installed and a working account. Audio Gear: A reliable headset or dedicated microphone is mandatory. In a world this lethal, clear communication is the difference between survival and a shallow grave. Character Readiness: Do not bring a character or a backstory. We will roll up your Raiders—and likely witness their first deaths—together during our first session. It’s fast, it’s brutal, and it’s handled at the table. The Shadowdark Mindset: No prior knowledge of the Shadowdark rules or the setting is required. Just bring a willingness to face impossible odds, a sense of humor for when things go south, and the grit to survive a world that wants you dead.
What Apshai brings to the table
What You Can Expect in the Nightmare Lands Rulings Over Rules: This is OSR at its core. We prioritize common sense and creativity over technical bloat. If you come at a problem with a "metal" approach—something wild, cinematic, and dangerous—I will give you a "metal" answer. If it makes for a better story than just staring at your character sheet, we’re going to roll for it. The Soundtrack: I provide a curated heavy metal soundtrack that fits the 80s apocalyptic aesthetic. No fluff, no synths—just the right background for looting tombs and dodging death. Low-Fi Tactical Clarity: We use Roll20 for maps and tokens to keep the tactical situation clear. I prioritize a functional, clean interface that stays out of the way of the action and your ingenuity. High-Stakes Reality: This is not a heroic power fantasy. The dice fall where they will. In the Shadowdark, victory is never guaranteed, which makes surviving the night actually mean something. Professional Pace: I run a structured three-hour session. We start on time and end on time, cutting the filler to focus on the exploration and the peril.

How Apshai creates a safe table
Safety and Table Conduct The Nightmare Lands are a brutal world of brutal violence and uncanny horror. Because the content is gritty and meant to be unnerving, I prioritize a professional environment where everyone can focus on the adventure without the wrong kind of stress. Session Zero: We begin with a dedicated session to set the tone, establish boundaries, and ensure everyone is ready for a "metal" horror aesthetic. Lines & Veils: We utilize a shared document to list off-limit topics and scenes we’d rather "fade to black." This is a living document we respect throughout the campaign. Digital Signaling: We use X, N, and O cards via Discord/Roll20 as a simple way to signal if someone is uncomfortable or if we need a quick group check-in. If a signal is given, we pause, pivot, and keep the game moving. Scheduled Breaks: Every three-hour session includes a 10-15 minute break to stretch, reset, and check in.
