About the adventure
McCartney By Night is a Vampire: the Masquerade chronicle set in the fictional city of McCartney at the turn of the millennium. This game is beginner friendly as the focus is on neonate vampires who are struggling to carve out a slice of the city for themselves amidst the urban decay that their elders have allowed to grip the city. The theme of the chronicle will very much be personal horror and the struggle of ages. Characters will have to come to terms with their new state of being and the fact that they exist in a hierarchy that is (almost) enternal and never changing. How are they able to advance and grow if those around them stay staid and stuck in their ways? If you are uncomfortable with personal horror and occasional lapses of control then this may not be for you! This is a chronicle that starts in 1998 and will see the PCs play a coeterie of fledgling vampires. Initially the pawns in others' schemes they will have the opportunity to rise in status and power. Also, given that players will start as neonates I intend this to be very beginner friendly. If there is sufficient interest, there will be provision for new players to join as the game progresses - perhaps as the childer of existing characters. Won't that be fun? ;) The overall length of the campaign will be based on player interest. I'm very theatre of the mind and roleplay heavy. This is not a tactical wargame. I'd much rather hear you describe the cool things your character intends to do rather than "Er...I move my counter four hexes that way." It should also be noted that my games are NOT combat heavy. In Vampire, you are an immortal creature, and one of the few things that can threaten that immortality is physical violence. Therefore, it stands to reason that most vampires will avoid combat unless absolutely necessary. If you are looking to play some kind of combat threshing machine then this is NOT the game for you. To reiterate, Vampire is, by nature, a dark game of personal horror. One of it's themes is that of "the beast within" so there will be moments where your character may lose agency. However, this is a game where we want everyone to have fun - therefore, a session 0 is essential to talk about boundaries, triggers etc. I aim for my games to be safe and fun for all involved, so I take these sessions seriously. Finally, it goes without saying that everyone is just here to have a good time. There will be zero tolerance of anyone who seeks to be disruptive, offensive or make other players uncomfortable. This is pretendy-fun-time-games (albeit in a dark horrible world) so please no racism, sexism, homophobia or any of that other awful stuff.

About me
Long time GM - I started in the 1980s and have been the "forever GM" since then. Honestly, I have more fun running games than playing so I'm looking forward to sharing that love with others! I'm definitely not a rules heavy GM - I'm much more about letting players explore their characters and interact, and I'm happiest when I'm sitting back listening to interparty drama! Over the years I've run a ton of different systems with a heavy focus on World of Darkness. However, remember that part about loving interparty drama? Well, amongst my favourite games to run are Paranoia and Alien - I love myself a bit of PVP and these settings perfectly let players explore this aspect of TTRPGs safely! When it comes to running games, I'm a massive fan of music and sound effects and I love using them to help build atmosphere. So, if you fancy checking out games that are slightly different from D&D please let me know!

Creating your character
Character creation will be handled as part of session 0. I have some house rules around character creation which I will provide as part of the set up. Access to all materials needed for character creation will be supplied.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
As long as you have a Discord and Roll20 account you're good to go! That and an idea for a good HUMAN character.
What Iain brings to the table
While I use some house rules, the game will largely be run as per the V20 rules. I am very roleplay heavy and less likely to include combat. If you want to play a combat monster I'm not the storyteller for you! All of my games are theatre of the mind, but I make heavy use of ambient sound and music to help create atmosphere. I am interested in letting players get deep into their characters, so expect plenty of opportunities to roleplay to your heart's content.
Homebrew rules
You can choose to play one of the following clans or a Caitiff (if you want everyone to look down on you): Brujah Gangrel Malkavian Nosferatu Toreador Tremere Ventrue Please don’t ask to play anything else - I’m not allowing any bloodlines, Sabbat clans, or any of the independent clans. All characters will start on Humanity - no paths. When assigning points to attributes, no attribute may start higher than your lowest stat plus 2 (IE if your strength is only 1 your other physical stats may be no higher than 3). The only exception to the above is the Nosferatu’s appearance of 0 - ignore that when doing this calculation. No ability may start higher than 3 during the “assign abilities” stage of character creation (but they can go higher through the expenditure of freebie points later) Raising an ability to 4 costs an additional freebie point, and raising an ability to 5 costs an additional two freebie points. Likewise, no background may start higher than 3 during the “assign backgrounds” stage of character creation (but they can go higher through the expenditure of freebie points later). No discipline may start higher than 2 during the “assign disciplines” stage of character creation but ONE discipline can be raised to 3 with freebie points (no higher though) Every point of willpower bought with freebie points over 5 costs a cumulative extra freebie point (e.g 2 points for willpower 6, 3 points for willpower 7, 4 points for willpower 8 etc) On the topic of disciplines, during the “assign disciplines” stage of character creation you may only buy in clan disciplines When buying disciplines using freebie points (or if you’re choosing to play a Caitiff) you may spend them on the following: In clan disciplines Animalism Auspex Celerity Dominate Fortitude Obfuscate Potence Presence I don’t make use of combination disciplines in my games so they are not available to purchase Blood sorcery paths and rituals may only be purchased by those who have them as an in clan discipline Characters with Thaumaturgy / Necromancy get a free level 1 ritual when they first put dots into the discipline - all other rituals must be learned in game. No character may start with more than 1 point of status if they choose to buy that background. We are keeping things simple and ONLY using the V20 main rulebook - which I will provide access to. Please don’t ask for anything from any other supplements - you know what the answer will be. ;) I will include a list of merits and flaws that CANNOT be chosen during character creation as part of the house rules document. There are a plethora of flaws that give “-X to social rolls”. Unless you have a very good reason for taking multiple you may only take one. A full houserule document will be provided.

How Iain creates a safe table
We will be having a session 0. In addition, there will be a lines and veils document sent out. Vampire IS a horror game, but we don't want to be triggering anything in real life!
