About the adventure
I welcome you all to a world where the spirit of heroism is abundant. To be an explorer, an adventurer, to fight against maleficence, is the highest regarded profession. It is no secret that evils lurk in this world, creatures of lore, mysterious magics, neredowells intent on breaking apart society bit by bit. But people rest knowing there are groups of individuals whose sole goal is to protect them. You are one of those individuals. You attend a school where you train daily to fight them, to deter them, to quell any harm they may do and this summer, you get assigned your first place to protect. Groups of students branch off around the lands to towns longing for protection, begging for heroes, and celebrating their every move. You have not been assigned one of those towns. Last on the location list, unpicked every year, is the town of Havenwood. A tiny community along the Emerald River, the only thing you know about it is that no one knows anything about it. There are no adventurers in your textbooks who came from there, no monsters that need slaying reside there, no catastrophic events in need of attending to. But you forgot to turn in your location request sheet, so now you cross the bridge into Havenwood, after hours of desolate travel, prepared for a summer of nothing. --- This campaign is built for new/newer DnD players, though experienced players are welcome to join. This will be a story and exploration heavy campaign, though some battles may occur. I plan to give everyone a map of the town and hand off the reins for you to do what you want. You can explore the shops, you can look for clues, you can chat with town members -- it is completely up to you. If this is your first introduction to DnD, welcome! I look forward to playing with you! I will be helping you through all steps of the character creation process, teaching you how to read your character sheet, and leading the game. At any point if you have a question or are unsure how to do something, please ask! We're all learning together! --- Content note: As you may be able to predict from the title of this game, small animals (namely ducklings, squirrels, and dogs) with monstrous magical abilities will be the creatures that the characters will be fighting. That said, there will be no blood, no physical injury, no animal death. Any violence in the form of attacks and damage will be "non-lethal" so instead of trying to kill the creatures, the purpose of the attacks is to sedate/stop the creatures. When a creature reaches 0 HP, it becomes docile and amicable, allowing you to investigate them (and pet them if you'd like). Depending on the group, we can decide to allow violence/attacks/death for the PCs/NPCs, but non-lethal animal damage is non-negotiable.

About me
Hello! I am a GM who loves using Dungeons & Dragons as a guide to create my own RPG games. I love teaching DnD mechanics to new players as well as making tricksy deals with experienced players to make their gameplay as fun as possible!

Creating your character
If you are an experienced DnD player, you are welcome to come in with a level 3 character. We will be using the standard stat array, though I am always open to alternate pitches. If you are playing your first DnD game, welcome! I can help you create a character that fits what you are looking for. Two questions for you to begin thinking of: 1. Class: Which of the following most excites you most for your character: Casting Spells, Fighting, Healing, or Being Sneaky/Solve-y. 2. Lineage: What type of creature do you think you may be? Some classic examples are elf, human, gnome, fairy, or giant, but if you have a different idea, that's great!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
We will be using Discord and Google Teams for this campaign. During the game, it is recommended that you have a way of taking notes, either a set of physical DnD dice or an online dice roller, and a sense of adventure! You will also need to be able to see your character sheet, whether it be on an online PDF, printed out, or on DnD Beyond/Roll 20.
What Laura Chiarello brings to the table
I will be providing a map of the town for everyone, and from there, you can explore and investigate as you would like! There are shops for you to purchase items in, clues scattered around the town to solve the mystery, and lots of NPCs (non-playable characters) for you to chat with. There is the possibility of some mild combat (see content note above), but it will really be used as a way to introduce combat mechanics to new players.
Homebrew rules
The "monsters" that have been created are homebrewed based on existing beast stats. They have been given silly pun/themed abilities and stats have been adjusted based on player experience. Additionally, I have created a simplified currency system for the purposes of this game. Everyone will have 5 bronze, 1 silver, and 1 gold to level the playing field. Bronze can buy you non-magical social food & drink. Silver can get you a non-magical item. Gold can get you a magical item. There are lots of shops around the town selling items, so choose wisely!

How Laura Chiarello creates a safe table
I will be sending all players a Lines and Veils document before our first session. This document lists content categories and allows the player to decide what content they are comfortable to engaging with in this game. When I have received these documents, I will be anonymously sharing with the group content to avoid and ensuring that the story does not cross any lines. At any point during the game, you are welcome to step out, call for a time out, or text me with any questions or concerns you have.
