About the adventure

Very important: This game will be played on a when enough players and the GM are concurrently available schedule. That means we may be playing once or twice a month. I know it states Monday mornings weekly as the schedule, but that's just needed to keep the listing visible. I will cancel any games that do not happen and adjust weeks where they do to the proper date and time. Anyone who joins must be okay with this flexibility, and I highly appreciate those of you who are willing to be flexible. You are a Shadowrunner. That means you take jobs from someone with no name, for a Corp that doesn't exist, to steal/extract/assassinate/hack another Corp for their ongoing powerplays. Why, Chummer? For the money. Sweet, sweet nu-Yen money. Who's in the Shadows with you? Sword-wielding, cyberware-enhanced Street Samurais. Riggers that can become one with machines-from motorcycles to turrets. An Elf with an SMG. Deckers that can patrol the Matrix, fighting off IC to grab data. A Troll as strong as an ox. A master of combat who uses a small amount of magic for their punches to hit harder. A detective who never shows the face behind their trench coat. And, if you're *unlucky*...a mage. Whenever magic is really involved? Hit the ground; it's gonna get messy. Do the job. Get the cash. Pretend you were never there. It's all about the shadows. I have often heard people say, "Shadowrun's lore is so cool, but the rules are awful." In response, this game will instead be using the rules of Cyberpunk RED with some adjustments. You can read more about the adjustments in the "Homebrew" section. Given this is not a specific edition of Shadowrun, I'm trying to distill it to it's "purest" form, so the lore isn't necessarily on a specific timeline, but given RED rules work best before the Matrix became wireless, the Matrix is still in need of a cyberdeck. I like the whole "Magic is still a bit rare and chaotic, though it can certainly be controlled" aspects of the earlier editions of Shadowrun. But, lore-wise, it's mostly about the vibe and not necessarily specific events that happen in each edition. I'm also trying to keep the spirit and lore of Shadowrun without some of its more racist depictions, so while Orks are still discriminated against, they aren't coded as black, the Native American Nations exist but aren't inherently more magical, etc. Since this is my first time running something like this, there may be some adjustments to the rules as we play together, so anyone joining the table should be aware of and comfortable with that. I always welcome feedback, and am hoping that you will feel comfortable providing it, particularly as this is going to involve some trial-and-error. There will be group discussions to talk about what is working periodically.

About me

Hi! My name is Brooke, and I’m passionate about role playing and storytelling. I’ve been involved in TTRPGs for 5 years and GMing for 4 years. I’m most acquainted with Cyberpunk RED (both in the core 2045 and 2077 setting with the Edgerunners Mission Kit). I’ve GMed over 100 Cyberpunk RED games, whether they be in a campaign, living community, or one-shot format. I’ve also played hundreds of Cyberpunk Red games. In addition, I’ve run games of Cy_borg, CBR + PNK, Marvel Multiverse, Shadowrun 2nd Edition, and Cyberpunk 2020. I also have experience playing MASKS and Fallout 2d20. I enjoy trying new systems, so if anyone wants to play anything from Vampire the Masquerade to Brindlewood Bay, I’m down. I can run DnD if need be, but my hope is to give other games the spotlight they deserve. What brings me to RPGs, and to GMing, is my love of acting. I enjoy role playing and creating a world and stories where people can deeply inhabit their characters around fun, life-like NPCs. What’s most important to me is my players feel comfortable and have fun, and as a femme member of the LGBTQIA+ community, that especially means welcoming those who may have felt excluded from the ttrpg community in the past.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation is going to happen before the first session. Due to the nature of the homebrew, we're going to have to work in depth together on it, and everyone gets a free 3 hour character generation voice call with me. It works primarily the same as just Cyberpunk RED Character Generation in the book, but there will need to be a few tweaks if you: Want to not be Human Want to use Magic, from adept to full-on Mage Want to be a rigger There are also some changes to how roles will work to fit with the setting, particularly with regards to things like Execs or Nomads (no wastelands out there!) So, mechanically a lot of it is very similar in chargen, but much is also different. A lot of our communication will also be about flavoring. I have a specific sheet I'd like you to use that will be in the discord server that you'll receive a link to upon joining. The elements we are using are from the Core RED Rulebook and some stuff from Interface Red 2 (the Fantasy Forms) and an updated "Magic Returns" DLC. If you find anything else you'd like to use, feel free to ask me about including it. Especially if there's anything particularly from Shadowrun you want to include so we can talk about how to make it work! This game is for people who are fine with there being some changes and a lot of communication on both ends about what could work, especially as some things might not. Character Generation rules are on pages 29-120 in the Core Rule Book. The "Complete Package" method on page 42 gives us a lot more room to tailor the game directly to how we'd like it to work, but if you want to use the Edgerunner method on page 41 that's fine too, we just may have to adjust some things later.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need: A Roll20 Account A Discord Account (there will be a linked server in the message you get after joining the game) A basic idea of Shadowrun lore (there is magic, there are some metahumans like dwarves, elves, orcs, and trolls, there is cyber, etc. Ask any questions if you have them! But truly, very basic things. There is a lore document in a shared Google folder)

What Brooke- GM sadhedonist brings to the table

I use character voices, beautiful maps that I buy, images, and music. I have story and lore elements in every game, even ones that are finished in a session will have elements that carry over. I make my npcs feel like real people in order to really bring the world alive. My combat is based off of what is needed for the story-from none to death-defying, but there will almost always be an alternative for creative solutions to make it at least less intense, if not unnecessary. I am very familiar with the Cyberpunk RED rules, which will be helpful as we adjust them for this game. There will be a formal opportunity to provide me with feedback on a form I'll send you around your 6th session and every 15 sessions after that, though you can have it more often if you'd prefer that. My inbox is also always open to talk about ideas regarding the rules, the lore, characters, narrative, how I GM. I just ask that you please keep it kind. If I am going to do something with your character, I will talk to you about it so you get a say in your own story. Normally, I play quite RAW. Due to the nature of this game, we will have to be a bit more flexible, but I'm still planning to stick with the mechanics as we build them as much as possible.

Homebrew rules

These rules will change as time goes on and there will be a google doc we can all edit with rules. 1. Some of the roles will be a bit different, particularly the Nomad role. Due to the closest thing to a nomad being a "Rigger," which is someone who becomes one with machines, it's more of a nomad/tech combination. My thought is having Riggers that are either mostly just non-vehicle tech and riggers that are mostly vehicle tech and perhaps add drones to the list of what they can add instead of a bunch more vehicles. So the two roles still exist and have their own niches to not break the game, but they're both riggers. 2. Magic. Ah, magic. Some things will be flavor. For example, as a physical adept, you can play a solo and just flavor your use of solo points to be using combat magic instead. Or as a medtech, you can flavor your speedheal as a healing spell. However, one way or another, we need to get to mages. We will be using the Magic Returns! Elflines online DLC, but with some changes. There will be a new skill for magic, that will be rolled every time a spell is cast. This is based on the Empathy Stat. There will also be a new derived stat, coming from Current EmpathyxWill that is basically your magical capacity. Each spell that you cast has the potential to take points off of that derived stat. You can continue to cast once you have gone past that number, but at that point you will start taking negative modifiers, Humanity Loss, and/or HP loss, depending on how far you go. Only people with 5 or more EMP can use their magic. More on this will be in the google doc. People using just adept magic (reflavored solo) or healing magic (reflavored medtech) won't need to deal with the magic skill or derived statistic, just true mages (hermetic or summoners). We can also talk about just ways to flavor current mechanics as magic for mages as well if that's easier, we just will have to figure out how drain will impact it. There are homebrewed creatures and mechanics. All homebrew will be listed on the Homebrew document. Again, anything and everything is up for changes, but I'm trying to keep this as clean of a reskin as possible to make it easy on everyone. All feedback is welcome!

Safety

How Brooke- GM sadhedonist creates a safe table

I will be sending out my Digital RPG Consent Checklist that's based on the Monty Cooke one. It's basically just a list of all possible topics and you mark if you're fine with them (green), can have them mentioned but not described (veil/yellow), or don't want them in the game at all (line/red). You can also add things if you can think of anything not on the list that you might not want in the game. You can also tell me what you really **would** like to see in the game on that sheet as well. Because these things aren't all-inclusive and things change day-to-day, you can also stop the game at any time if it is making you uncomfortable. You can do this by tagging me with an X in the chat, DMing me an X, pressing the X card on Roll20 (anonymous), or even saying "stop, red, or x." If you are not in the headspace to do any of these, you can also leave your seat and come back when you're ready, just make sure to let me know what happened when you came back. You never have to say why you hit the X card, but if I am aware that it was you who did so I will reach out to you after the game to check in and see how I can support you. I have a break about halfway in that is 13 minutes long, with occasional smaller ones outside of that. You can feel free to use the restroom, stretch, take a call, etc at any time, just please type brb in the chat if you can. If you have an estimate as to when you'll be back, please type that as well. We'll have debriefings after the game to talk about what we thought worked and what we thought didn't work, for rules or anything else in the game. I do free Session 0s to talk about expectations or anything else that comes up.
