About the adventure
A hundred years ago, the gods grew angry at the mortal races' constant fighting and lust for power. They caused a Cataclysm that left the world sundered, and they vanished. Now, a retired adventurer is trying to fix things by funding a team of heroes to travel the continent and help people. Explore the country, meet colorful characters, make allies, meet enemies, and find a way to fix what the gods so callously destroyed. High fantasy, low technology, sticking to the core classes, but I'll welcome most race options. Expect dangerous combat encounters, including rival adventurers and character foils with class levels, as well as social interactions and dungeon crawling. Looking for 3-5 players.

About me
I'm Xan! I've been a DM for 17 years, and have run an uncountable number of games in an uncountable number of systems, including D&D 3.5, Pathfinder, D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2e, and Powered by the Apocalypse. My style is heavily narrative- and player-focused. I'll run a grand overarching story while incorporating player backstories and motivations. I can also run modules, one-shots, and mini-adventures if that's what players are looking for. I'm good at improvising and adapting to player choices on the fly, so feel free to try off-the-cuff ideas. My stories are usually fairly lighthearted, with the occasional bit of darker or more dramatic moments thrown in, but I always make sure to bring the mood back up after a low point. My players should never feel like they're being constantly beaten down and dragged through the mud.

Creating your character
We'll do a session 0 to make characters and discuss boundaries and content warnings. Characters will start at level 3, with the Standard Array for stats. Core classes only, but subclasses, races, and backgrounds allowed from Xanathar's, Volo's, Tasha's, and SCAG. Variant options from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything allowed, and encouraged for anyone playing a Ranger. Characters will be stored on Roll20, where rolls will also be made.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
DM me on Discord, letting me know that you're a player in my game, and I'll invite you to a Discord server where we'll play. Make a Roll20 account if you haven't already.
What unknownmercury brings to the table
I'll provide maps for both combat and exploration, and I'll have a bot recording everything so people can review the session afterwards and make notes, as well as a Discord server I'll be using specifically for StartPlaying games. We'll mostly use Rules as Written, but if something is cool enough the rules can be broken. Generally speaking, an Ability or Skill Check doesn't have automatic failure or automatic success. Nat 1s and 20s are cool, but they don't mean anything outside of combat. I'll give inspiration for good roleplaying, good combat ideas, and for clever solutions to problems.
Homebrew rules
Drinking a potion is a bonus action. We'll be using Crunchy Crits; roll the dice once, add the full value of the dice, and any relevant modifiers. So for instance, a Rogue getting a critical on a rapier (1d8) with 2d6 sneak attack would roll 1d8+2d6+8(rapier)+12(sneak attack)+dexterity for damage. I like that more than potentially rolling three ones and getting awful damage.

How unknownmercury creates a safe table
Session 0 will be focused on discussing boundaries. Lines and Veils will be implemented to make sure what lines won't be crossed and what will be safely hidden away. At the end of every session, I make a point to ask my players if there are any "questions, comments, or concerns", and this is a great time to mention things you liked as well as things you disliked in the session. If you're not comfortable airing it to the group as a whole, DM me and I will make sure to avoid implementing it in the future, including shutting it down if other players bring it up. We'll also take breaks, usually midway through a session but sometimes earlier or later depending on the momentum of the group and how people are feeling. Players are free to step away at any time, just let us know when you do so we don't try to address you or interact with your character in your absence. After particularly intense scenes or emotional moments I'll also check in with the players and see if we need a break.
