About the adventure

It's your first day of senior year at Redwater High, the only high school in this dying, mining town deep in the Appalachian mountains. Chances are you were born here and many expect you to live and die here too, just like those who came before you. Your body is changing and the darker things in this world call out to you hungrily. But who are you really? • Someone who has accepted that fate? Comforted by well-planted roots that gives a stability the rest of your life doesn't. Or • Someone with the foolish ambition of escaping Redwater's grip? Ready to burn it all down and start anew somewhere far away from here. Regardless of which side of the line you find yourself, Senior year is your last chance to right the tracks. ----------- Monster Hearts 2 by Avery Alder ----------- Monsterhearts 2 is a queer game about messy coming of age drama that's deeply intertwined with supernatural horror. Together we will create stories about seductive monsters, teenage angst, personal horror, and secret love triangles. When you play, you explore the terror and confusion of having a body that is changing without your permission. This is a Powered by the Apocalypse TTRRPG taking inspirations from works like Twilight, Buffy, Ginger Snaps, The Vampire Diaries, and The Craft. All you'll need are 2d6 and a desire to get messy (in a fun way)! ----------- Redwater Summary ----------- Redwater, Tennessee (Est. 1867) Population 1,356 Set deep within the pine forests of Tennessee and along the river still lovingly called Stag Creek is the town of Redwater. Everybody knows everybody in Redwater. It's the kind of place you find yourself born in, already wanting to get out--except you never do. It's dying a town with a history that runs as deep blood does its soil and it uses that history as a slowly failing life support. Attractions like the Oxford Mansion, the Redwater Mine, and Trinity Station are the only reasons anyone outside of Redwater and Grimsby (f*ck Grimsby by the way) knows the place exists. Tourism is what kept this place alive back in the 90's and early 00s but those days are gone. Now what was once a premier destination vacation for anyone looking to get a taste of the "most haunted hills in Appalachia" has been desiccated and left with the dregs having cut away at itself to sell to the highest bidder. And oddly enough, this new version of Redwater (a town once also known as Stag Creek before...the incident) is somehow closer to the truth of this place than it has ever been. Blood runs deep in this place, like magic does its soil. There have been stories of demons and ghosts haunting these lands ever since the first mining camp was settled here. Creatures lurking in the creek, waiting to pull you under. Whispers from the leaves, tempting you to climb higher than you should. The Forests surrounding Redwater aren't the kind of place you should travel alone, unless you know the territory.

About me

Hey there! I'm Kendrick or Kendo, whichever you prefer, and I want to be your Game Master! Quick things you should know about me: I'm a 30 year-old, queer, neurodivergent, black nerd who's been playing TTRPGs since 2012. I love body horror, political intrigue, improv comedy, mecha anime, and the weird places where fantasy and sci-fi meet. I started my foray into TTRPGs playing D&D 4e in high school when a friend of mine got me into watching the Counter Monkey series on The Spoony Experiment. Hearing him recount tales of friends and strangers coming together to tell the wildest stories possible always made my heart race as I yearned to do the same. Now I can. Nowadays, I primarily run lots of non-D&D-esque TTRPGs like Monster Hearts 2, Rapscallion, and Kids on Bikes. Though I prefer using Tales of the Valiant or Chasing Adventure for my heroic fantasies, I still love getting down and dirty with D&D 5e. I'm mostly known for being on the marketing team for Kobold Press and as the creator and GM of the queer-horror actual play podcast, Tales Yet Told. If you want to get a sense of how I run things, you should check it out. https://www.TalesYetTold.com

Character creation

Creating your character

Before the game players will receive access to all of the game files and Skins as well as setting information. Players should look through the list of Skins and narrow down 2-3 options to choose from. We'll finalize these choices during Session 0 where we will also be answering relationship questions and building our story palette. All characters must be 18+ due to the content of the game.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a working computer/phone, microphone, headphones, and a stable internet connection. You will need an active Discord account to join the server to join session calls and gain access to links and documents. Lastly you'll need an account on Roll20 (https://roll20.net/welcome).

Safety

How Kendo creates a safe table

This game has the potential to touch on many difficult topics such as mental illness, emotional manipulation & abuse, and many of the other serious issues that teenagers face in day to day life. Our goal is to safely explore these topics in a way that gives players agency over their story while still allowing space for challenging themes and content. ~ ~ SAFETY TOOLS ~ ~ LINES/VEILS Players will receive a link to a shared Lines/Veils sheet that will act as a living document over the course of our campaign. You are encouraged to fill it out before our Session 0 to set a foundation for our safety discussion. STORY PALETTE We will also be using The Palette tool (I originally discovered this through Microscope by Ben Robbins) to further define what specific concepts and themes we want to explore together. We'll fill out the palette in Session 0. X, N, & O CARDS During session we will be "X, N, & O's" to signal how we're feeling during play and if we need to stop to discuss what is happening above table. POST SESSION DEBRIEF At the end of every session there will be space for a debriefing and for stars, wishes, & sparkles as we reflect on the time we had together.
