About the adventure

Years ago, when you were in school, you were transformed into a Mystical Guardian of the Sparkle Heart. Together with the other Guardians you were able to defeat the otherworldly monsters called Eidolons - just in time for finals! You all moved on, and went out into the real world to live different lives. But now a new threat has appeared and you will have to learn to remaster your old magic, reconnect with the other Guardians, and find a way to save the Sparkle Heart from utter destruction. You will love this game if you: ✅enjoy role-play and improvisation ✅like magical hero tropes (think Sailor Moon and Steven Universe) ✅believe in the power of friendship ✅want to explore identity and stories of overcoming oppression No incoming knowledge is necessary - this is a beginner friendly game! But if it means anything to you, we are using Girl By Moonlight, a d6 system based on Forged in the Dark. The genre is Magical Girl which is a fantasy sub-genre in which a character (classically a girl or woman, but can be any gender) magically transforms into an alter ego in order to battle evil. The classic example is Sailor Moon, who would transform from an ordinary school girl into the moon princess with moon powers. This game will deal with themes of friendship, trust, and identity. There will be fantastical violence, intense themes and drama, and the potential for real failure. The rules facilitate a narrative focused game where combat is quick and rules light. There is significant room for shared world-building which means that you can help shape the fantasy world and the problems the characters face. 📖This game is for storytellers, dreamers, improvisers, and total beginners who are excited to figure out where they fit.📖

About me

I'm Micaela, your Kind and Benevolent Dungeon Master! I've been playing tabletop games for over 10 years and have 6 years of experience running Dungeons & Dragons 5e. More recently I've been exploring games using the systems Powered by the Apocalypse and Forged in the Dark, such as Thirsty Sword Lesbians and Girl by Moonlight. To me, tabletop role playing games are the perfect tools for telling collaborative stories, making new worlds, and connecting with others in ways outside the norm. I run games because I love telling stories and I love doing it with other creative people. My goal is to create a safe and welcoming space for all who want to play and collaboratively tell stories that are fun and meaningful. If that sounds good to you, please join me at my virtual table by signing up for one of my listed games or messaging me about your game ideas.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will occur together during session zero (the first scheduled session). You do not need to have made any decisions prior to session zero, although I will have the different playbooks (character sheets) available in pdf form for you to look at if you're curious. You do not need any materials in order to make a character. You will fill out your character sheet using a form fillable pdf and can then either use it on your computer or phone, or print it out.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

In order to be ready for session zero (the first scheduled session) you will need to do the following: ➡️ Connect to my Discord server. A Discord account is needed (they are free). The invite is sent after you sign up for the game. ➡️ Make sure you have an Alchemy account (also free). It is recommended to download Alchemy, but it can be used via browser if necessary. ➡️ Ensure you have a microphone, webcam, and pen and paper. You can roll dice virtually via Alchemy, but I highly recommend physical dice as it is a lot more fun! This game uses six sided dice (d6). More specific instructions will be sent in your welcome message when you sign up for the game, including links to my policies and procedures.

What Kind & Benevolent DM, Micaela brings to the table

I specialize in story 📖 and character 🧙‍♀️ driven games that incorporate player world-building 🌎 and ideas. I love introducing new players to the game, setting the mood with interesting visuals and soundscapes, and letting my players' creativity run wild. My GM style puts character decisions front and center and ensures everyone gets the chance to impact the story in meaningful ways. Some other components of my GM style include: ✅ Rule of Cool - the rules are flexible to the narrative and player intentions. ✅ Combat Light - combat is always narrative driven, not random. ✅ Theater of the Mind - most encounters will be narrated verbally, although more complicated combat might utilize a map. ✅ Role play Heavy - there is plenty of opportunity for characters to interact with each other, NPCs, and the environment. ✅ Wacky but High Stakes - my stories are often silly in premise and allow for a lot of laughs, but the narrative stakes for characters will be high providing for intense role play opportunities. I will provide moderation for a safe and accessible environment for all players. I strive to ensure every player gets moments to shine in every session and that the narrative will be satisfying for all involved. I value open communication with players and always uphold the integrity of safety tools.

Safety

How Kind & Benevolent DM, Micaela creates a safe table

I am always working to make a safe and accessible table for all my players. To that end I employ a number of safety tools. These are all detailed in my policies and procedures document and will be reviewed thoroughly during our session zero. If you are new to safety tools or TTRPGs in general, the rest of this section may not make a lot of sense to you. That is okay, don't worry about it. I will tell you everything you need to know in session zero. If you are familiar and want to know what tools I like to use and how, read on. Other than a session zero to set clear expectations, I also use lines and veils, the X/O card and luxton technique, an open door policy for breaks, and a debriefing that includes stars and wishes. Our Lines and Veils document is a fluid document that starts with the results of the Monte Cook RPG Consent in Gaming Checklist (filled out anonymously) and then added to during session zero and as needed throughout the campaign. X cards can be sent verbally and through game chat via discord, or they can be sent via direct message on discord to me in order to keep the sender's identity anonymous to the other players. An X card will always result in a break in play either before play resumes during which I would discuss the card with a player who has sent it anonymously or after the card is resolved collectively in order to facilitate a mind reset. There is an automatic break about halfway through game play, but players are always allowed to ask for additional breaks via the open door policy. Debriefing happens at the end of all sessions, during which I will lead a brief discussion of game events to help separate what happened to the characters versus players. This is also when I do stars and wishes as well as expectations for the next session.
