About the adventure

This is a classic module. It is the best introduction to the D&D game for those just starting, while giving experienced players the chance to fall in love with Phandalin all over again. It all starts with a simple delivery before you find yourself fighting through a web of intrigue with monsters around every corner. There is much hidden to uncover. Many heroic moments await you. Best of all, a great evil is crawling in the dark far below. Can you hear it whispering your name?

About me

I'm a lover of stories. Been telling them my whole life to make people laugh. I'm pretty chill but I also have a good-natured sarcastic streak. I'm invested in lifting other people up. We all can't get to the top of the mountain if we don't take the time to lift each other up. Leadership has been a huge part of my life. From the military to my days of being a bouncer at a club, to leading audits of the objects at the Smithsonian Institution. I understand that people learn at different rates in different ways and have always balanced my approach when teaching something new. Guiding people to knowledge is often better than telling them. It's been 20 years since my first taste of a campaign. In the intervening years, I’ve spent my free time writing science fiction and fantasy stories while also devouring movies and tv shows. It wasn’t until recently that I've just fallen in love with D&D, hard. I’ve been working with some really great groups across a couple of campaigns on Roll20. I want to help people unburden themselves, step away from the grind, and get lost in a story where they can be the hero. Ultimately, I believe that collaborative storytelling is the most interesting way to tell stories. I’m flexible and open to discussing whatever ideas someone would bring to the game. I hope everyone finds an adventure and I hope to be the person helping them tell their story.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will discuss character creation in session zero, though I encourage you to bring ideas to the session. We will be starting at level 1, but won’t remain there for too long. We will be using standard array for stats. Your characters will be created on the D&D Beyond website in the campaign I create there. I will share my content with members of the campaign, but I can provide a list of books in advance for those interested in reading up beforehand. I'm also happy to discuss character options in advance. No homebrew characters without written approval from the DM. You are more than welcome to take any class or race you so desire. We will not be using Eberron content in the campaign. Artificers need approval from the DM as they don't quite fit in this module.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need accounts on Roll20, D&D Beyond, and Discord. I will send you links for you to join the campaign for each site. I'm happy to walk through any part of you getting set up for the game.

What The Cave Troll Bard brings to the table

We will be using 2024 character creation, but I'm open to discussions if someone feels really strongly about a 2014 class or race for their character. The games will be run through Roll20. There is a super-easy extension that allows for the use of D&D Beyond character sheets in Roll20. Both Roll20 and dndbeyond are free. You just have to set up an account. I will send a DNDBeyond campaign link. You’ll have access to the library of books that I own during the campaign. I will also provide ambient music to make the experience more immersive. I do voices from time to time. It's something I'm still getting comfortable doing. I do embrace the rule of cool. I can't wait to tell the story of your adventures.

Homebrew rules

-Drinking a healing potion is a bonus action. Any other potion is an action. -Switching weapons in combat does not cost an action. -Reloading a crossbow does not take an action. -For Bards and Rogues only, I'm allowing the use of bucklers. Plus 1 to AC. Bonus action bash for a straight 1d4. There is potential for modifications beyond the base buckler. Proficiency in light armor is required.
