About the adventure

Curse of Strahd takes place in the land of Barovia, a small, isolated valley surrounded by magical mists. These mists prevent anyone from leaving and often pull in travelers from other worlds without warning. Barovia is a dark, dangerous place. The sun is dim, the weather is cold and damp, and the wilderness is filled with wolves, undead, and stranger horrors. Villages are few and far between, and the people live in constant fear. The valley is ruled by Count Strahd von Zarovich, an ancient vampire who holds complete control over the land and its people. He is intelligent, manipulative, and enjoys toying with those who catch his interest. Strahd is the central figure in the story—players will almost certainly meet him, and he will influence events whether they seek him out or not.

Homebrew rules

No mundane item tracking — You don’t need to track basic gear like torches, rope, rations or mundane ammunition. Just be reasonable. Extra Attack works with held actions — When you hold the Attack action, you may use your full Extra Attack feature. Similar features like “Thirsting Blade” are also affected by this rule. Critical hit damage — Maximize the base damage dice, then roll additional dice and add modifiers. Long rests require a sanctuary — To complete a long rest, you need: Relative safety Comfortable sleeping arrangements Fresh food Shelter from the elements Intelligence bonus — You gain a number of proficiencies or languages equal to your intelligence modifier (Minimum 0). Flanking — A creature can’t flank an enemy that it can’t see. A creature also can’t flank while it is incapacitated. A Large or larger creature is flanking as long as at least one square of its space qualifies for flanking. These flanking rules are not intended to be used on hex grids. 90 Degree Flanking - When a creature and at least one of its allies are adjacent to an enemy and on perpendicular sides or corners of the enemy’s space , they are considered to be 90 Degree Flanking that enemy. 90 Degree Flanking creatures gain a +1 modifier to melee attack rolls against that enemy. 180 Degree Flanking - When a creature and at least one of its allies are adjacent to an enemy and on opposite sides or corners of the enemy’s space, they are considered to be 180 Degree Flanking that enemy. 180 Degree Flanking creatures gain a +2 modifier to melee attack rolls against that enemy. 90 Degree Flanking and 180 Degree Flanking can be used in tandem. The maximum bonus to melee attack rolls granted via flanking is +4 0 HP does not cause unconsciousness — You instead fall prone and gain 1 level of exhaustion. You still make death saving throws. You can take actions and move as normal. Directional limitations on force — Features that push or pull a creature may only do so on the horizontal plane unless “any direction” is explicitly stated. Eg Telekinesis spell. Legendary Resistance drawbacks — When a creature uses Legendary Resistance, they suffer a unique side effect. Delaying initiative — You may delay your turn to a later initiative count lower than your own. Simplified Drawing/Stowing — A character may draw or stow any tiny objects in their possession before or after taking the attack, magic, or utilize actions. Spark of Insight - At the DM’s discretion, a character may gain a bonus—often applied to an ability check—when a player demonstrates clever, creative, or particularly skillful play. This recognition can arise from any aspect of the game, including combat, exploration, or social interaction. A player may nominate another player (but not themselves) for such a bonus. The final decision rests solely with the DM, and these awards are intended to remain rare and meaningful. + Other reworks/adjustments (A document will be provided)
