About the adventure

THE tl;dr: A colorful "traditional fantasy"-ish homebrew 5E campaign, where the PCs are princesses of different kingdoms going on an epic quest/road trip across the realm! INSPIRATIONS: "Zelda", "Mad Max: Fury Road", "Avatar: the Last Airbender", "Sailor Moon", "She-Ra", and whatever we feel inspired by! THE PREMISE: The realm of men, monster, and their many "kingdoms" is at an uneasy peace, disrupted when a new superpower -- the Graye Empire -- begins its sorcerous campaign of conquest. However, a group of "princesses" (who may or may not be literal royalty) narrowly escape capture and set off on an epic adventure across the lands, familiar and new, using their various talents, wits, and power in order to unite the people and slay their new enemy. THE SETTING: A kitchen sink of "traditional" high fantasy and modern-inspired vibes, up to early 20th-century. Features multiple sapient races beyond humans, elves, orcs, beast-folks, undead, automatons... let's come up with it together! THE TONE: PG-13-level, lighthearted, leaning towards comedic, but ultimately sincere, punctuated with the major dramatic and tense moments, and a grand sense of adventure. It's about friendship, community, forging trust, overcoming adversity, and a celebration of women, badass in their own ways, doing badass things together! THE PLAYERS: Looking for players who love telling stories with their tables! Those who have individual stories they want to tell, and share interest in engaging with the stories of other players, all working together to tell one complete campaign, will have a great time here! Open to folks of all ages, backgrounds, genders, and experience levels -- eagerness to play with the table is key! THE GAME: Here's what to expect from me! (note: can be adjusted per table discussion and as the game evolves) • Mix of 2014/2024 rules (table decides collectively how much! Also, players determine house rules!) • Mix of roleplay and combat, skewing towards roleplay and narrative, but expect tactical combat in unique scenarios semi-regularly! • Fairly low on crunch but high in creative potential. Trying to minimize overly extended gameplay passages like dungeon crawls or arbitrary puzzles, instead enabling creative problem-solving amidst novel scenarios. • Features a tangible narrative trajectory, but encourages player proactivity and taking big swings! On the "railroad/sandbox" scale, imagine a roadtrip on a freeway with multiple routes, detours, and scenic routes for you to choose to explore! THE DM: What can I offer as DM? • Rich, collaborative storytelling environment for players to contribute to their stories to a shared world! • Aesthetic presentation! Atmospheric soundtracks and original artwork made exclusively for the campaign! (will also draw PCs!) • Exciting stories and challenges tailor-made for player-driven narratives! • Opportunities for homebrew! Excited to see what players will bring! • Regular correspondence for feedback!

About me

Howdy! I'm Nines like the number, a freelance artist (comics, writing, music) who loves TTRPGs and telling stories through gameplay! I'm very much a collaborative storyteller who loves working with players to create and discover narratives together, and putting effort into atmosphere and set-dressing while hosting games in-person and online! I am greatly influenced by a lot of genres and tones across all sorts of media, from lighthearted farce, to subtle character drama, to gritty, tense action, to just plain weird and breaking the understanding of what TTRPG fiction can be. I'm very excited to hear back from you and working together to find the game that you, me, and the rest of our players want to play together!

Character creation

Creating your character

NOTE: We will do group character brainstorming together at session zero! Have an idea, but be open to adjusting if needed, and have backups/Plan B's in case! Each PC is a "princess" of a "kingdom". What does that mean? • A "princess" is someone seen as a person of significance, and doesn't have to be a literal, traditional royal. It can merely be an honorary title representing power that may not be a state, ex. the warchief of a large tribe, the VP to a powerful company, or the heiress to a criminal gang. Ultimately it's as arbitrary as what qualifies as a Disney Princess haha • Even if they're not a "princess" of something "big", they should still be seen as "big" to the people around them! • Princess needn't be cisgender female, queer examples also accepted! Some story prompts for your princess! • What's their name? Do they have a unique title? • What is their "kingdom"? A national state, or a collective that's more nebulous? • How did they become a "princess"? Were they born into it? Was it bestowed upon them? • What makes them worthy of their title? Birthright? Talent? Unique ability? • How do they present themselves? Traditional fantasy princess dresses? Adventuring gear? Something less expected? Open to many acceptable answers! • What is their "kingdom" known for? Do they have any signature cultural identifiers, exports, practices, etc.? • What is something your princess WANTS? (life goals, personal desires, or other defining pursuits to yearn for?) Prompts for mechanics! (will be settled on together at session zero!) • What is their (sub)class? (starting at level 3!) • Each PC starts off with one free feat (on par with Variant Humans), what is something they'd get and why? • If you want to run homebrew content (species, classes, etc.), let me know in advance before session zero to go over/approve!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Things I expect from new players (and why!): • Discord account (main platform for sessions, communication, and other fun correspondence on the server!) • Roll20 account (the preferred VTT for battle maps) • Character sheet (I'm not picky about where or how you make it, but I prefer you be able to export it and/or make it sharable) • Microphone (so we can hear your voice! Doesn't have to be super high quality, just something to make communication and the game happen swiftly and effectively!) • Webcam (being able to see face-to-face while playing makes the social aspects all the easier and more fun! Your privacy is 100% respected and guaranteed; it will not be recorded or shared outside of game time without your explicit individual consent)

What Nines brings to the table

• Rich, collaborative storytelling environment for players to contribute to their stories to a shared world! • Aesthetic presentation! Atmospheric soundtracks and original artwork made exclusively for the campaign! (will also draw PCs!) • Exciting challenges tailor-made for player-driven narratives! • Tactical combat encounters in exciting and unique scenarios! • Opportunities for homebrew! Excited to see what players will bring beyond the "traditional" D&D game! • Regular correspondence for feedback and deciding on the direction for the game and the table together!

Homebrew rules

NOTE: I prefer to allow the players to decide on house rules! I go with the assumption that folks wanna play "pure" D&D by default, but we present options and decide them collectively during session zero! Below is a list of rules that I personally often run at tables, but is subject to change: • Nat 1s lead to failure on all checks. • Crit damage = (max dice damage + normal damage roll) • Healing potions: spending bonus action makes you roll for HP, full action gives max HP. I also don't like strictly banning material, but we may discuss nerfs if necessary before play, to come to a gentleman's agreement over balance.

Safety

How Nines creates a safe table

• Players will be asked to fill out a lines/veils survey to determine subject matter and whatever may be uncomfortable. Will be discussed collectively at session zero and established per table code of conduct. • Discord will have private messages and server will have private player-to-DM channels for X signs and any communications of discomfort -- will resolve the game swiftly and will discuss any further adjustments required for the game regarding any triggers.
