About the adventure

The deadly bloodmists which have isolated the village of Bent Mill for centuries have mysteriously vanished. It's become very clear to the peoples of the Mill that they know nothing about the lands they live in. It's time to leave the sawdust floors and thick doors behind and see the world the bloodmists hid from you since your grandfathers, grandfather's days. It's time to test yourself against the wilderness. Time to learn if the old legends are true. Time to witness firsthand what's become of Ravenland. It's time to learn who you really are, learn where your people originally came from...and, finally, walk the fabled road between Freedom and Fate.

About me

My name is David and I'm a forever-GM. I was bitten by the big, bad red box at age nine and the rest, as they say, is history. I've been playing and running tabletop RPGs for 45 years and it is still my passion. I have also always enjoyed teaching new players and systems. Teaching others to play and GM has always struck me as the best way to be a good custodian to the hobby. Something I became mindful of after owning an LGS for a few years. Over the decades I have gotten a lot of practice writing and running several popular IP based RPGs. I'm particularly fond of the Star Wars, Star Trek, The One Ring & Warhammer 40k campaigns I've been fortunate enough to GM in the last two decades. On a more recent note, I have begun running Forbidden Lands campaigns. I've fallen completely for the setting and the system. Free League really outdid their selves with that particular work. The last few months I have been learning my way around Foundry VTT. I couldn't think of a better way to learn the VTT than run something on it. So, that's a glimpse into my past and a word about my present. As for the future, I sincerely look forward towards meeting more of the community here. See you at the table, David

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be dealt with before the first session. Players may either look into the process in Forbidden Lands Players Guide and communicate their choices for me to compile OR I will be available 90 minutes before the starting time to walk anyone who needs it through the process. They need only message me before play and I will zip them an invite to Foundry where we will complete the characters. I always keep a stock of premade PC's as well. Just in case.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A relatively modern computer capable of running web based programs. (8-16 Mb of RAM & Chrome or Firefox- No Safari) Decent internet access. You will need a Discord account. Soon after signing up, you will receive an invitation to the Fire Mountain discord server. We have campaign specific chats there where we coordinate the campaigns as well as use the voice channels for audio during the session.

What Fire Mountain brings to the table

Collaborative storytelling is the very heart and soul of tabletop. I personally bring to the table more than thirty thousand hours of experience to aid with the emergent process necessary for collaborative storytelling. This helps ensure that I can deliver the experience you'll love without it being rote or predictable. This is especially true for a sandbox style campaign setting like Forbidden Lands. I'm a decent voice actor as well. I like to use ambient music. This particular game is very much a dark survival fantasy setting. That necessitates sticking fairly closely to the rules to preserve the perilous feel of the setting. I like to use a combination of battle maps, tokens, scenescapes and theater of the mind. I've found Forbidden Lands rules-light approach to movement and ranges works very well with this style of engagement. Any GM will tell you that starting a campaign is one thing. Ending it in a satisfactory manner is an entirely different animal. I have landed that particular plane hundreds of times for actual thousands of people, and I can count the dissatisfied players on three fingers. Stick with one of my campaigns to the end and you'll be retelling portions of it to your friends for decades to come. Thank you for your time and interest and I look forward to sharing my table with you!

Safety

How Fire Mountain creates a safe table

The lines and veils document will be on my Foundry in the players journals. They will be able to access it whenever they like. My Session Zero includes a ban on PVP, an agreement to avoid judgements of any type against any other participants, and excludes only game related judgements on my part. Aggressive or abusive behavior/playstyles won't fly especially Reaction Abuse. Long story short-aggression, abuse and disruptive playstyles will not be tolerated. I use the Open Door Safety Tool. If, for any reason, a player becomes disturbed or distressed they are completely free to simply walk away from the table for as long as necessary to get themselves sorted. No questions asked, no judgements made, no explanation necessary. Please note that this does NOT stop the game. There would be no point to stopping a game in a traumatic moment simply to resume it at that same moment with zero knowledge of what caused the distress to begin with. After the session I like to take a few minutes to do a round of Stars & Wishes. I find this is constructive, helps eliminate any residual stress that may have built up during play and builds anticipation for the next session.
