About the adventure
Welcome to Grimnir, a world cupped in the branches of a dying World Tree, birthed from the bones of a traitor. Inspired by Norse mythology and the creators of 'Odyssey of the Dragonlords', this campaign is an epic "Heavy Metal" fantasy odyssey. You are not just a mercenary; you are a Fate Bearer, destined to wake the Stone Court or witness the final sunset of the world. This game is for players who crave high-stakes storytelling where your background actually matters. Through 'Epic Backgrounds', your character’s personal quest is woven into the main plot. Whether you are a Royal Heir seeking a stolen throne or a Cursed Raider looking for redemption, the world of Grimnir will react to your choices, your glory, and your failures. Expect a cinematic experience powered by a highly automated Foundry VTT. We focus on immersive roleplay, tactical seafaring across the Serpent Sea, and visceral combat against the Yoten giants. If you love 'God of War', 'Vikings', or 'The Witcher', and want a game where the "Rule of Cool" meets a deep, reactive world, your seat at the mead hall is waiting.

Creating your character
Character creation will be the heart of our Session 0. We will use the unique 'Epic Backgrounds' system from the setting, which grants your character special goals, boons, and a pivotal role in the story. - Starting Level: 1. - Ability Scores: Point Buy or Standard Array. - Sources: Raiders of the Serpent Sea Player’s Guide (provided) and all official D&D 5e sourcebooks. - Integration: We will build your character's ties to the other party members and the starting port of Kekkell to ensure a cohesive group dynamic from the first minute. You can prepare your character sheet wherever you feel most comfortable with, because we will use Foundry, so character creation is almost effortless in the platform.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
- Hardware: A computer capable of running a modern web browser, a stable internet connection, and a quality microphone. Camera is optional but highly encouraged for better immersion. - Accounts: You only need a Discord account. No Foundry VTT account is required; I will provide a direct link to join as a guest. - Software: We will use Discord for voice/video. Please have it installed and tested before the session.
What DM Yan brings to the table
- Premium VTT Experience: A dedicated Foundry VTT server with high-definition maps, dynamic lighting, and advanced automation to handle the "math" so we can focus on the story. - Immersive Style: I utilize professional-grade ambient music, sound effects, e-character voices to bring the NPCs of Grimnir to life. - GM Philosophy: My style is cinematic and reactive. I love the "Rule of Cool" when it enhances the narrative, but I provide a fair, tactical challenge in combat. I treat the world as a living entity that remembers your deeds. - Lore Hub: Access to a private Wiki/Journal to track NPCs, locations, and unlocked Fate Runes.
Homebrew rules
- The Glory System: A core mechanic where your deeds earn you fame, titles, and even divine intervention as you reach higher tiers. - Advanced Seafaring: Custom rules for managing your longship, crew morale, and maritime exploration. - Fate Runes: Narrative buffs unlocked through roleplay and fulfilling prophecies.

Safety
How DM Yan creates a safe table
Safety is my top priority. We start with a comprehensive Session 0 to align expectations and discuss the 'Lines and Veils' document (shared via link). During the game, we use digital 'X, N, & O' cards integrated into the Foundry VTT for anonymous signaling. We also use 'Stars and Wishes' at the end of every session—a moment to highlight what we loved (Stars) and what we want to see in the future (Wishes), ensuring the game remains fun and respectful for everyone.
